Kotick Calls Call of Duty a Tribute to the Military

Military personnel have embraced Call of Duty, says Kotick, because they recognize how respectful it is.

The Call of Duty games are more than just entertainment, they're a tribute to the men and women of the American military. That's according to Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, who was speaking at an event on Thursday night that was one part [url-http://www.amazon.com/Call-Duty-Black-Ops-Xbox-360/dp/B003JVKHEQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1289083086&sr=1-1]Call of Duty: Black Ops[/url] launch party, and one part Metallica-headlined [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104919-Metallica-Coming-to-Black-Ops-Launch-Event] fundraiser.

Kotick said that the games honored the "courage, dedication and the sacrifice" of America's servicemen and women around the world, and suggested that this deep respect was why the Call of Duty series were the most played games amongst military personnel. Kotick's respect extended beyond just words as well, as he pledged $1 million to the Call of Duty Endowment - a charity that helps people make the transition back to civilian life after leaving the armed forces - on top of the money raised at the event itself. Kotick also promised that the Endowment would find 1,000 jobs for veterans on top of the donation.

It's naïve to think that there's no PR component to Kotick's comments, donations and pledges, but just because there's an ulterior motive behind the Endowment doesn't mean it's not worthwhile. A million dollars a year - Activision also donated a million dollars when it set up the Endowment last year - is hardly pocket change, and will go a long way to helping the veterans that Kotick says he holds in such high regard.

This doesn´t change what a massive cock he is, but at least he´s a charitable cock. That counts for something in my book.

I respect the endowment?they certainly never had to establish one?but Call of Duty as a tribute to the military? I think that's stretching it. It's like saying "Debbie Does Dallas" was a scenic travelogue of Texas.

This still doesn't make up for all the dumb shit he's already said throughout his career. Like he gives a shit about the men and women in the military. You know why they play COD? Because COD is so damn popular. I bet they play Madden to. Does Madden honor military personnel?

But do the military really deserve said high regard? Circumstantially, kind of; but ultimately not.

Nah, the do Breast Cancer Awareness with the NFL. FWIW.

And honestly, it's probably more as much a tax thing as a PR thing and both are more than being an actual tribute. Doesn't change the fact that people benefit and that does count for something.

it's not so much of a tribute as a great well for material.

Authors do not say that their suspense novels are a tribute to serial killers or detectives all that often, and game dev's and pub's shouldn't try to pull this shit either.

What a douchebag, trying to play the patriot card when it really is all about the money.

Good for you kotick for giving up a small pile of money to do some good, though you could do just as well giving more of your ill-gotten gains.

As much as I hate Mr. Kotick, I can't help but to praise his subtle manner of saying "yeah, Medal of Honor sucks".

I hate you.... with every ounce of my being.

The soldiers need help adjusting from their old world to the new one. I for one am happy that social responsibility is not dead in our capitalist society and that people that truly need the help can get it!

Medal of Honor did more towards actually depicting what people did and yet it still gets less love than CoD......

Obvious troll is obvious.

...wait.
He's donating money for US veterans?
Just what the hell happened while I was getting a drink?

EDIT: Oh, he's still in it for the money.
For a second there I thought he wasn't a being of pure concentrated evil.

I'm not saying that they don't need adjusting, but I am saying it's their fault that they need adjusting. Perhaps my post seems a little reactionary, but ultimately if you join the military you expect (even encourage) the trauma, the alienation, and the injury.

Of course! A tribute to the Military!

That's why it features the General of the US army turning against you for no reason!

Brilliant!

It's great that he donated that much money to a charity. Still doesn't change my opinion of him, as harsh as that may be. I've stated numerous times that I won't be buying BlackOps and why, but I won't clutter the thread with it any more.

And for some reason, I still don't like Kotick...I wonder why? (Please note obvious sarcasm.)

Yes, I understand that donating a million dollars to an organization is a very charitable thing, but Kotick has sunken whatever reputation he had so low that the only thing I can say is "That's nice, but what's the catch?"

If Bill Gates did this then I would say "it was a nice thing to do" however this Kotick ain't no philanthropist.
