I'd usually rather have people assume I'm a guy on xbox live -- for kicks and giggles, but also because of the fact that I'm usually treated a lot differently when they find out I'm a girl. To be honest, I've gotten more guys telling me about their unsuccessful love lives, or starting off a conversation with, "I bet you already have a boyfriend..." than I have sexist/lewd comments.

One guy realized I was a girl, and immediately told me that long distance relationships actually work. This, while we're mowing down zombies. I'd like to actually talk to my teammates, and I don't mind some low-key flirting, but seriously, I'd just like to play the game and not be given different treatment.

I don't find myself hit on very much. I don't often use voice capabilities online, and I guess even when I do, I can pass as a 12 year old boy, so my boobs don't so much come up. I'm perfectly content to let them think I'm a guy. Also, when I do use voice capabilities, I'm on the same server, if not the same team, as my boyfriend, so people might be hesitant to hit on me for that reason as well :p

Happened a little bit on EverQuest. Though for the first few years I didn't have voice chat, so people only knew I was a girl if I told them. And since generally I was playing along with my boyfriend, if they knew I was a girl, they also knew I was spoken for.

Once I started using Ventrillo, it was immediately obvious I wasn't a bloke. I had a few comments from people surprised that the raid leader was a woman, but beyond that I guess I was lucky. I got a few cheeky comments about my plummy English accent, but beyond that I got off fairly lightly.

Made some good friends though through playing, and had a blast. Whilst there's a few creeps out there, most of the guys playing were decent blokes having a laugh.
Ahhhh, good old EverQuest. I sank three years of my life into that thing with my necro. I still miss some of the fun raids from back in the day.

Anyways, we had guild members that "said" they were girls, but none of us were using any type of voice chat at the time, so there was no way of knowing for sure. None were ever treated any differently, that I recall. These days, though, its alot different on Xbox Live. There always seems to be a jerk in the bunch, if a lady is in the group.

Nope. But mostly because I 1) play as a guy in more or less everything and 2) most people assume I'm a guy, anyway. That works for me.

I play on a Garry's Mod server often (like most of the time i game), and there is a regular "Cutejewel" she is a girl.
Goddamn she pisses me off.. She is the kind of "gamer-girl" that is like "OHAI IMA GIRL AND I PLAY KEWL RAIGHT?!" Srsly she pushes it into my face every goddamn time she's on.
Not only that but EVERYBODY is fucking falling over her (its an RP server) so when we got into a fight someone wanted to pay me 200 bucks (ingame) to "forget it".
I was like "NORWAY!"

(dun rly know what this has to do with the topic:p)

12 pages of Whiteknighting.

Wow.

You're playing with a bunch of guys who are known for being social rejects and are desperate for social validation. Of course they're going to hit on you.

Just don't use the microphone or draw attention to the fact you're a girl.

I die a little inside every time I see the phrase 'girl gamer'.

okay i was in a Lobby and there was a girl

i said 'hi' she says 'hi'

and then

Random Guy: OMG A GIRL BONER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[facepalm]
I only occasionally see that, nowdays its usually the, may I say, boring and unoriginal yell of:

"Oi! You! Girl! Yeah, you. Sit down, and f*** off back to the kitchen."

The funniest thing is they usually trash everyone. Still, I rarely see people trying to hit on them.

Chicks don't play video games, what are you talking about?
Yeah, who's dumb enough to put their PC/console in the kitchen?

I kid, I kid, and I kid because I love...
em...i keep my laptop in the kitchen and im a guy heh...... i guess something went wrong somewhere
I was thinking more of desktops, laptops can be moved around, even though I think it's weird to store your PC in the kitchen. Also, havent you ever heard of the "Women back to the kitchen" jokes?
This made me lol. i actually have my ps2 and ps3 in the kitchen.

Seriously, that is funny. Could be even more funny if you are a woman :)

I have to say, getting actually hit on doesn't happen too much. There is the odd comment, but usualy it's just shock that a girl is playing a game and it's not an MMO. There is of course the odd guy who upon finding out that you are female will automatically ask for your email address or MSN as if it is pre-programmed into him. On the whole, the guys I have met have been very well behaved.

...Saying that there were a group of very err 'flirty' guys who would follow me around RSV2 but they were harmless enough.

I dont get hit on a lot because I dont use voice, or reference that I'm a girl.
I used to play on voice with my boyfriend a lot and the only responses I got to my voice were of disbelief that girls play games or something abusive whenever my boyfriend killed someone. :p

When I'm gaming online I avoid using the mic mainly because I get hit on a lot as soon as I do. Which is awkward because usually I'm gaming with my boyfriend. To avoid conflict I just don't join the open game chat.

Guys being general creepers towards anything female is one of the main reasons I don't have XBL (the other main reason being that I'm cheap as hell). I've played online using a friend's account before, and... well... it's really, really annoying. I get enough lewd comments/dangerously-close-to-sexual-harassment-stuff in real life. I don't want it to infect one of my favorite hobbies, as well.

Pfft, you ladies should be grateful that guys give you the time of day when they can't even see if you're pretty or not. You lot should take such advances as compliments, not get offended over flirtation attempts.
It's not that I get offended that people make advances to me. It's the immediate "OMG can I see your boobs" or some far more obscene comment that I'm offended by.
Completely off-topic, but I approve of Hula-Mouri.

On topic: Funny enough I'm a guy and I was only hit on once by a guy when I was playing Trickster Online. My character was a Magician and a couple guys came onto me.
Similarly off-topic- Heh, thanks. I approve of your approval of Hula-Mouri. Good to know someone else enjoys the ridiculousness of Sengoku Basara.

Aaand back on topic: I've never gotten guys who hit on people based on the gender (or pseudo-apparent gender, as above XD) of their characters. A guy can make a female character just as easily as a girl- and I know I, for one, tend to make male characters in MMOs to avoid the "guys hit on girls who game" thing. So... why do the desperate guys think that character gender is a good way to judge player gender?

I think girls need to get over themselves.
They're not as rare as they think.
And not even half as special as they'd like to imagine themselves as.
And I see (or rather hear through mics) plenty of chicks on TF2.
You say you have met many women online, yet your statement makes me think that you have never even talked to one. I have never once met a female online who has made a big deal about her gender. I have met men who go nuts over women playing games, but that hardly seems like the fault of the girl. You are placing the blame at the feet of the wrong people.

The ridiculous bold lettering was a nice touch, by the way.
uh I don't know what you play but I'm tired of hearing this "Randomnickname: So any girls in here besides me?"

If that's not attention whoring, tell me what it is.
I haven't ever heard anyone sat that.
That being said, a few attention whores don't represent all of the female gender. Acting as though all women should bear the burden of the ego of a few fools is unfair.
Never said a few attention whores represent the female gender. But it's just like kids on CoD, not all of cod players are kids, but as soon as one enters, he starts yelling with his squeaky voice. With females, you never notice them, untill one of them starts attention whoring. So I probably stumbled upon PLENTY of female gamers, but of those who I noticed were females, 80% were whoring.
It's not that there are that many attention whores, it's simply that you notice them more when they are female. Besides, the same could easily be said for males. What I'm trying to say is that there the gender of the jackass online has nothing to do with the fact that they are a jackass.
Yes, indeed, that's exactly what I was trying to say, thanks for explaining it better (no sarcasm)

That 80% does NOT speak for the other 20% of us than you very much. And that 80% is of your own personal poll. For the majority of games I've played, including WoW, only about 10% are attention whoring. The 90% don't care, they're there for the game, NOT guys. In my case, I was there for the game, NOT guys. I just happened to be harassed enough to give up my myspace link, and what happened after was NOT on my agenda. I didn't start playing WoW looking for attention, I happened to be dating a guy, and that guy got me into WoW. We werent together when I met the guy I've been talking to for the past 2 years, and I didnt go into the guild looking for a relationship or attention. So your 80% is not everyone's 80%.
Please note that when I say attention whoring I do not say actively seeking a boyfriend, I mean "I'm a girl look at me, give me gold" etc etc bullshit.

And the reason that percentage is so high is because I DON'T go around asking if people are guys or girls, I just play, don't give a crap. That's the reason that when I know someone's a female is because she is purposely rubbing it in front of EVERYONE'S FACE which is, as I stated earlier, attention whoring.

I am talking about random gaming here, of course. When you get in clans and stuff the percentage lowers a lot, as you can tell if someone's female by their voice without them directly telling you.
I knew what you meant by attention whoring, and that's why I responded the way I did. Most girls I see playing WoW don't go around asking for gold. I guess it depends on the server, but mainly depends on the girl. Most girls I see playing games aren't flaunting it and whatever. That's just my experience. Apparently you've had a different one. The point remains the same, you're 80% is NOT everyone's 80%.

I wasn't arguing, just stating a simple fact. Everyone has a different experience. I play Black Ops, I have a headset, I play music over it and don't talk. I listened to other girls and guys talk but they were talking to each other because they were friends in real life and joking around. I only use my headset playing Soul Calibur IV with about 2 people. Even when a guild has Vent, I don't find myself using it, and if I do, I don't see/hear other girls flaunting that they're female. I see most girls keeping quiet, or talking to their significant other or friends or something. Like I said, everyone's experience is going to be different. You and I could both go to Disney World, and you could have the worst time there while I could have the best time in the world. We could eat the same food, you hate it, I love it, or vice versa. Doesn't matter what it is, everyone's experience is going to be different, granted some may be similar, but for the majority everyone's going to have a different experience.
I know what you are saying, because if you read my messages, I am clearly speaking in 1st person, never said this is what the online experience is like.

And you know, it's not that I'm saying I've had a bad experience playing multiplayer. I have a lot of fun, it's just that, as I said earlier, whenever I encounter an attention whore she POPS OUT SO MUCH it gets my attention (hence the attention whore term) and I can't help but facepalm and think "are all girl gamers like this all the time?!". Of course that fades instantly because I know they aren't, as I have a couple girlgamer friends who are the exact opposite of that (to the extent of straight up lying and saying they are male)
