ok so i went for my consultation today and they said that i am eligible for it, the only things holding me back are the risks that come with it, so my question is, with laser eye surgery, what is your opinion on it? do you think the benefits outweigh the risks ?

Depends on the risks.

DDo the risks involve being given cookies, or being abducted by aliens, or what?

I just got contacts.
I currently wear contacts at the minute, i would just like to be able to go swimming without having to pop my contacts in and out every time, also taking them out every night and putting them back in in the morning is an annoyance simply because i am normally too tired to do either without them flying every where

I personally won't get eye surgery when I grow up, I don't think so atleast. I think my glasses make me look more smartical. Hehehh.

Exactly this. Contacts are really easy to use and if you get some of the breathable ones you can wear them all day without noticing them. So long as you keep a good routine for cleanliness of them their benefits fair outweigh the risks of laser eye surgery :D

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/2745035.stm this pretty much highlights all of the risks in the procedure

I am not against using contact lenses but they cost me a lot of money unfortunately, so i agree with coxafloppin, it does save money in the long run

If I could afford it I would go for it. My eyesight is way to bad for contacts that and I cant bring myself to poke my own eye. Ultimately its up to you, if you have considered the risks carefully then go for it if that's what you want.

Firstly, I refuse to let anyone put a lazer anywhere near my eyes. Secondly I wear glasses and am quite happy with this because I think I look better with them than without.

So no, I wouldn't do it. However the decision is up to you. It's a personal thing.

PS One thing to remember, it can wear off after 5 - 10 years and after that you can end up with worse sight. Just thought I'd say.

My friend got lasered in the army. He says he gets horrible migraines now, but other than that it's all good.

As far as I know, it doesn't harm them at all. I've been wearing contacts for about a year now. I've done bad things (like wear them overnight, which will fuck them up), but swimming doesn't harm them. There'll be times when I get out of the water and I can see better. I don't open my eyes underwater though.

Also, it may be worth mentioning that I don't have "permanent" contacts, I have the ones that you're supposed to wear for a couple of weeks then throw away.

I am undecided.

My major beef with it is that you are essentially burning sections out of the lense of your eye.
As an industry it has not been around long enough to genuinely know what the long term effects of this are.
It's already know that some people's eyes heal afterwards, leaving them with vision no better than before but no damage as such. Whilst others may heal or deteriorate further over a long period of time.
There is also the risk you can end up blinded by it, it's a small risk but it's still there.

Of course all taht's balanced by the number of people who have had it and suffered no ill effects, the fact that there aren't hundreds of people from the early 90's suddenly going blind with eyes full of scar tissue is encouraging too.

But overall I'm sticking with Glasses and Contacts, if laser surgery goes another ten years or so without any horrible side effects rearing their head I'll probably give it a go.
