I am kind of late to the party. I have been hearing something about certain levels being deleted after people spent hours on them? Is everyone just overreacting like gamers always do before they actually understand what is happening or is it true that we can no longer use other copyrighted things including Sony brands to make our levels?

Shit, that second to last paragraph is scarring the crap out of me!

While it's understandable that copyrighted materials would be barred from use in players' levels, the main problem here seems to be a lack of consistency and fairness -- you can imagine how frustrating it could be to spend hours working on a perfectly envisioned level, only to have it deleted without warning because, as one player wrote, they had a Metal Gear Solid character appearing in it. Hopefully Media Molecule will come through soon, and get a better "moderating" system in place.
I'm making a mother-fucking Shadow Moses Island level! However, I have played various Metal Gear themed levels already, but I think I'll hold off until there's a solution to this.......shit

Hmmm, surely if theres no profit being made then it would be fine, right?
If Sony allows people to create levels based on an existing IP they don't have the rights to, they're profiting by selling LBP in the first place.
And I know, that seems on par with Bungie suing a pencil manufacturer because I drew a picture of Master Chief, but digital rights laws are still a pretty massive grey area and I don't think Sony wants to take any risks.

it's a bit different than that and digital law is pretty clear, rather draconian if you really want to know

i'm not shocked that this is happening and i'm pretty sure the said level that was removed because it resembled someone else's property

it's funny how ppl are shocked when they get something taken off cause it was violating property rights

This is pretty ridiculous. My friend is working on a level that's actually pretty cleverly designed, and would hate to see it deleted due to "copyright infringement."

Bummer, I totally feel for the amature level creators. You put so much effort into something, only to have it deleted. Total bummer :(

actually it's not ppl who are doing things that are creative, it's ppl who are copying a level from another game, which is illegal

sure it sux that you spent hours making the level but not really a surprise when it got deleted cause it's a copy of some game level and they kinda missed the whole "i agree not to voilate copyright laws" part of the eula

Are you saying that if my Shadow Moses Island, a fucking tribute to the Metal Gear Franchise, gets deleted you will feel no sympathy towards my contribution and effort into making the damn thing!?!? (I spent 2 hours trying to make it look like it snows!)

How DARE you! Hell, I'll show you what I have done right now![/*****]

I perfectly understand the copyright view on it, but alot of the levels that are hits are based off of some copyrighted material (SAW, Silent Hill, MGS, Mario, Sonic, Final Fantasy (music also) the list goes on) and it would definately be a shame if those really good levels be deleted because of some copyright dispute.

I can understand both sides, and feel for the creators, but hey, if it's the law, it's the law. I suppose, create it, tell your friends, play it really quick, then watch it be sent into oblivion...

SO many levels have been deleted, that I hardly feel the need to play the game. No really, the D-Day levels, the God of War levels, Metal gear levels, this awesome Batman Arkham Asylum level, Silent Hill, Musical Levels, exactly how do you make something that is a tribute in this game without infringing copyright if you haven't even taken anything from the game?

Silent Hill in LBP =/= an actual silent hill game.

Would it not be possible to say that LBP versions of other game levels are a parody [http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/parody], and thus be protected under something like the Fair Use Doctrine [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use] in the US?

I'm not a legal buff, and I certainly don't claim expertise on all parody laws out there, just a thought though.

Edit: Ninja'd by saccharin. That's what I get for getting links.

Try making a Disney themed LBP level, then see how well Parody and Fair Use holds up.

Again I'm not a legal buff but I'd like to think that if they (the levels that is) did properly come under the terms of Fair Use that the judiciary would rule in favour of Fair Use and the gamer in this case. However reality tells me that they'd likely side with Disney and their legion of lawyers.
