True, but her zombine joke ruins things somewhat.

My favorite support character has to be Waka from Okami. He's just that awesome in a quirky way. Him or Auron.
Final Fantasy 10?
Who else? No one else is awesome enough to have glasses, a huge frickin' sword, and sake.

The AIs from COD4 were fantastic. I know what Yahtzee has said of them, but they are extremely helpful in picking off waves of bad guys and never got on my nerves.
The cod 4 AI is good and yes they are sometimes pretty helpful. But if your playing a high difficulty level, it will always ALWAYS be up to you to push forward.
At those higher difficulties, all the AI becomes is a target dummy to draw fire away from you and occasionally throw back grenades.

The best support characters i have encountered are those from Left 4 Dead.
Very very rarely have they run in my way and i have never been shot by them.
Although on one occasion Louis shot a witch for no reason and for me, they never ever pick up molotovs or pipe bombs.

(Possible grammar mistakes)

I like Agro from Shadow of the Collosus.
Or, if that doesn't count, the Princess from Ico because half of gameplay is getting her around the castle with her dying.

Like the person above me has said, the Left 4 Dead AIs are very, very good at helping you out. Although they do take their time when you've been caught by a Smoker. Or the time when Louis died outside the elevator in No Mercy's hospital level after we were swamped by a zombie horde and a Tank. After we entered the elevator Zoey said, "Game over, man! Game over!" And her and Francis laughed. What the hell!? Louis just died, you 'tards!

No one for Dogmeat yet? I loved him throughout my journey's in the Capital Wasteland.

He always used to alert me to enemies that I couldn't see with a nice low growl, and when we actually did get in a fight he proved himself time and again by drawing attention away from me so I could drill the enemies in the head with my weapon of choice.

Outside of combat he helped me find many a weapon with his ability to home in and search for them on demand, I think I probably would have never found the Firelance and it's ammunition after that one random encounter if it weren't for him.

Best dog ever... my own dogs excluded of course.

I was going to explain my choices, but I figured that might take too long, so here's a list:

Red (from all of the Brothers in Arms games)
Cole (from Gears of War)
Price (from any of the Call of Duty games made by Infinity Ward, particularly 2 and 4)
Gaz (from Call of Duty 4)
Dog (from Half-Life 2)
Prophet (from Crysis)

Also, I'm not sure if she counts, seeing as how she's the main antagonist of the game, but Alma from F.E.A.R. is pretty ridiculous.

This was my choice as well. She is tough, smart, and, hot. A wining combo.

I really like Elika from the new Prince of Persia game, she provides an excellent counter balance to the Prince's personality.

I don't mind the NPCs in Half Life 2. Sure, they get in the way and give you First Aid kits at inopportune times, but at least if they get killed it's no big deal.

I'd have to go with Minsc and Boo from the Baldur's Gate series on PC.

"Go for the eyes, Boo, go for the eyes!"

Are you kidding me? That joke was so groan-worthy, so awful that it was just incredibly endearing. Man, I love Alyx.

Scree, from Primal (PS2).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primal_(video_game)

He's a clever, subtly smart assed sidekick voiced by Andreas Katsulas (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0441537/). On top of that, he's a gargoyle. Damn useful too- In game and plot.

Alright, let's just face it. Most support characters are better off dead and spend a majority of their time running in front of your bullets and cracking unfunny jokes. But now and then, there are some support characters that DON'T suck.

My favorite support character is Carmine from Gears of War 2. He was never in your way and he would actually help you in need.

I was genuinely sad when he was dead in the worm. I can't believe they killed him off halfway through.

He was one of the best characters in the game, or in just about any game I've played. I wish there were more support characters like him.

Who is your favorite support character?
I have a feeling that Gears 3 will feature C. Carmine as the newest member of Delta, only to have him die within the first third of the game, to leave you to either meet up or go on a Saving Private Ryan-esque to save him. And D Carmine will be a fucking badass. You'll come in on him running out of ammo and killing a sniper by flinging his lancer across the distance to have it land chainsaw-first in the snipers head, sawing him in half from sheer momentum. Or something like that

Personally, I've always liked Cortana.

Don't know if either of them count, as technically in a JRPG everyone's kinda a main character, but Shana and Yuna, from Legend of Dragoon and Final Fantasy X, respectively.

Shana, for being the "Hyper-energy life-mage girlfriend" but having a personality you DON'T loathe, and actually being tremendously useful in combat. And Yuna for being arguably the most valuable character in the entire game, since she could have the highest damage output if played right.

And since FPS's seem to be popular here...I believe his name was Cartwright, from Resistance: Fall of Man. Made you feel like you were helping HIM, instead of the other way around.
