The core gameplay of Left 4 Dead 2 is pretty much identical, but there is plenty of new content to justify a sequel. Most sequels bring just as much, or less, new stuff to their sequel and they're acceptable.

Random example - Metroid Prime 2 had a new campaign, new enemies and weapons. Left 4 Dead 2 does the same, and the new enemies are far more important because they drastically alter the balance of the first game. Initally Valve used the same Survival difficulty curve from Left 4 Dead in Left 4 Dead 2, and they found that Survival became incredibly difficult with the new Special Infected.

If Metroid Prime 2 was an acceptable sequel, why isn't Left 4 Dead 2?

Do you expect them to include tactical nukes or freeze cannons or some shit like that? An assault rifle is an assault rifle, and there is not much you can do to make one different from another. It is factually inaccurate to claim that the only way the new guns differ from the old ones is that they look and sound different (for instance, the new sniper rifle has clearly different properties than the old one).
The new sniper rifle has a bigger clip. Theres also a new machine gun that shoots in bursts. Thats it. I dont see how what i said was 'Factually inaccurate'

"Sure, they added this new stuff, but I don't like it so it doesn't count!"
I don't recall saying i didnt like them. Overpowered weapons are always fun in the hands of the user, the point is their unfair to the other team (speaking mainly about versus of course).
Also it still doesnt make sense that you can keep swinging a melee weapon as long as you like but you get a timer on shoving zombies away.

New reskins and the ability to walk don't warrant a sequel.
Well who the fuck said they did?
Assassinator

And this is your tactic right here. You pick apart and isolate all the new features and say "well this one thing here doesn't warrant a sequel." Of course your scheme unravels as soon as one gathers up all the new features and look at them as a whole.
Is it really so hard to summarize my points for yourself?
If so then here is a list:
- 2 New weapons - Grenade launcher and magnum pistol
- 1 new throwable (boomer bile)
- Some melee weapons (overpowered, unbalanced and, as far as i can tell, no difference between them, except maybe a slight increase in swing speed for machete)
- Adrenaline shot (kind of 'meh' item really - they fuck up the sound so you cant tell where things are coming from, but they give a slight increase to running and action speed as well as a small health boost)
- Gore (nothing against it, and i like the sexy way pipe bomb explosions make body pieces flying)
- Characters (nothing special - 'meh' again)
- 5 New campaigns

If you do the math, the added stuff = 10+melee weapons(don't know how many there are)
Not enough to warrant a sequel.
Happy?

Yes really.
nuh aaah!

What kind of an argument is this supposed to be? Not every player of the first game has a mic either.
My point is that communication will need to be fast - a lot faster than typing, as you dont have survivor outlines and cant see whats going on. You will take quite a bit of damage if pounced by a hunter while typing for help.
Also, people could do this gamemode on L4D one by using a console command.

"Sure, they added this new stuff, but I don't like it so it doesn't count!"
Again, never said i didnt like them. My point is that if they kept the original characters, no one would say "L4D2 looks like fun, but im not going to buy it because of the lack of new cast"

There is, but you're just pretending as if there isn't.
Read the list above.

No more useless than the old SI. Even the boomer tends to be useless if it has nobody to back it up. I imagine that the jockey could, for example, hijack a player and guide him into a witch or a car with an alarm.
True, but there needs to be a witch or car for that to happen, and he needs to stay alive long enough to make it happen.
I can see him being useful, but only on rarer occasions than the smoker.

I find that Left 4 Dead (i.e. the original) was a lot of fun, but had pretty much the bare minimum, i.e. if you took anything at all out of L4D, it would really start to feel like it's missing something. I find that there is a whole new feel in L4D2, it's a lot more adrenaline-pumping heart-pounding actiony, where L4D was more about just getting to the next saferoom alive. On the other hand, the characters themselves seem a lot more real and a lot less like action heroes (like the guys in L4D). I'm buying L4D2, but if you don't think there's enough new content to justify a new game, I can see where you're coming from.

Based on the demo, so far it's just more L4D. I doubt it's going to make any new converts
ummm... It sure as hell converted me. Paggering zombies in the face with an electric guitar is something of a dream for me. And now I can live it.

Also, shotgunz FTW!

p.s I played alongside assassinator just now. Frying pans and meleeing indeed.

I just kinda wished they kept the darkness of the first game, it just felt so fucking heart attack suprise scary when the hunter pounces your ass out of the rainy corner. Seriosly the daytime kinda ruined it for me. I know theres probably a darkness level (there has to be one).

But yeah its different, but i just loved No Mercy a bit too much i guess.

I dont get why everyone says it could just be dlc. People would be alot more pissed off if they had to pay like $90 for it and it took up a ton of space on their hard drive.

New AI director. AGAIN, a fucking DLC would have done it.
.
And on this note, how about learning something about DLC? You cant change the code of the original games, you can only add in new code, such as weapons or items.

I have gotten to play left 4 dead 2 this weekend, and I can say that it is definitely feels very different from the first game

1. Weapon selection, there are at least 2x the number of guns from the last game, and although they fall into the generic shotgun, machine gun, or other category, they all have a really fun and unique feel (AK47 and Magnum FTW!). And we cannot forget the addition of the melee weapons, there are few things more satisfying than getting to decapitate some zombies with a katana, machete, or electric guitar.

2. Campaign layout, in L4D, the stages of the levels were all 5 stages, with about the same distances between checkpoints, and very similar finales. In L4D2, some of the individual stages can last twice as long as usual ones do, some of the campaigns don't even have 5 stages, just 4 much longer ones (Especially the mall and the carnival). Also, in this one, you sometimes get little missions you have to do to complete the level, I really liked how the mall finale was set up and the last campaign in the city.

3. Zombies, the new zombies add a whole new challenge to the game. You will be all clustered together in a nice uniform group... then WHAM, a Spitter will come out of no where and acid you for a ton of damage. Chargers are also mad fun to play in versus mode and jockeys are a major pain to kill due to their size. My only complaint is that witches seem a lot easier to kill in this game than in the first one.

4. AI, the zombies are also a lot smarter this time around. They have strategies and know just how to pick out that one lagging player in the group with a well placed hunter or smoker. However, I am on and off when it comes to the human AI. Sometimes they are god-like players who snipe out a spitter from half a mile away, then there are the times where they are trying to knock the jockey off you with a melee weapon... and aiming at your feet.

All in all, it feels very different from the first game, and don't even get me started on the graphics.

I bought mine 2 days ago and I love it :D

It DOES feel different, the climaxes and crescendos are awesome and the gameplay is L4D on drugs, which is a good thing! Too bad I NEVER find a serve with less than a gazillion ping... Bots are retarded too, it took Coach an hour to figure that I was dying and had no health kit -_-

It feels different alright. It feels cheap and rushed. I think if they'd spent more than five minutes developing it, it might be a little better. I'm on Team DLC over L4D2. And I was pissed off about having to pay for it, too. Since the time they spent developing this, could have been used on EP: 3, a more important game in my eyes.

It certainly isn`t the same game twice as many of you have said , but those of you calling a complete revolution (or equivalent) are kidding yourselves
