Just some speculation, but what references to the Half-Life series do you think will (or should) be in Left 4 Dead? Personally, I wouldn't mind a crowbar (I must confess I got the idea from a Left 4 Dead weapons thread).

No more so then Team Fortress 2, which is effectively none. I enjoy half-life and all, and I am certainly not going to mind a reference or two. I would be a little disappointed if the zombie horde all happened to be Gordon Freeman though.

It might put a smile on my face, I dunno.

I reckon any homages will be subtle nods at most. The squeal of a head crab; a circular saw blade embedded in a wall; a glimpse of the Lambda symbol. A cult hit awaits, methinks.

You have to bare in mind the only reason they linked their last major non-sequel game (Portal) in with the Half Life series is to give that universe a bit more depth. Left 4 Dead has no real similarities with the Half Life universe (as far as I can tell) so I don't see why it should be linked.

The Portal stuff is going to be a pretty heavy sub-story in the Half-Life episode to come, methinks. SPOILER: What with the Borealis (an Aperture ship) disappearing an' all, along with part of the harbour. Almost as if it just fell into some kind of...portal...

That's actually really plausible.

No it's not. It actually has nothing to do with it in any regard. Only thing in common, game wise, is it's use of the engine.

But on topic, I'm sure there won't be any kind of link. These story universes have nothing to do with each other (as far as we know, of course). As some have speculated, maybe an homage or two hidden someplace as easter eggs, but nothing substantial or story/character-wise.

Wouldn't mind an easter egg/optional single player unlockable to turn all the zombies into headcrab zombies. That's be nice. Easter eggs are fun.

two different universes (storyline wise)
I wasn't expecting anything like Gordon Freeman flying a chopper or anything, just subtle references.

If that was true there would be no need for the one Freeman. You honestly think the combine would of stood a chance against an army of Counter Strike players? Counter Strike players are adrenaline fueled head shot junkies foaming at the mouth, and ready to fire at anything that moves ..... I should know I'm one of em'.
As for reference's I think that haruvister got it right with the occasional nod towards Half life 2 but no real link.

You do know the original game was called Half-Life: Counter Strike don't you?
Apart from that is hasn't got much of a story so it's hard to draw comparisons. But it is based on the same universe.

That would be the shortest game ever.
"Zombie's approaching, don't worry men, we'll fight them off... Oh Shit it's Gordon Free,"...(Sound of Crowbar penetrating skull).

I think that's because it was a mod for the half life engine. I really can't see the link between the two. I think CS more closely resembles real life, they predicted the war on terror before the Neo Cons even thought of using it as an excuse to shoot people.
I am reallllllllly looking towards left 4 dead though. I think it may be a new favorite for my friends and I.

Aye, since the Half Life universe is so lacking depth. ;)

Christ man, for a sci fi FPS, it's got one of the most convoluted mythologies there is.
Too true. It's unfortunate that so many gamers can't see that. Even if you don't like a game like Half-Life or other games with deep narratives, like Bioshock, doesn't mean you can't appreciate the complexity or depth of it's story. Players come to expect the developer to spoon feed them key plot points through cut scenes or some other means. Most don't get the story of a game unless some character comes along and spells it out for them point by point. Frankly, I find that kind of narrative rather insulting. It's like the creators are saying the player is too stupid or unobservant to grasp what's going on.

You never know.
Left-4-Dead could be in North America which would present to be remote and annonymous to the Eastern Europe that is Half Life 2.
