Eh, all I can say in return is that I don't see what you see, entirely. But even if he's the sort of actor you describe, where he just plays his usual role and the character is him, there are people who have won Oscars with that. The prime example being Jack Nicholson who's won best actor twice for that shtick. I think DiCaprio is better than Matt Damon but I think Brad Pitt is a fine actor as well, so to me that comparison doesn't speak badly for DiCaprio.

I'm not saying DiCaprio is one of the greatest of all time, but in comparison to other actors who've won an Oscar for best actor/actress, I don't see how he doesn't stand up. If Jane Fonda and Jack Nicholson can each have two, why can't DiCaprio have one?
Some actors can coast by on their boundless charisma, like Jack Nicholson (when he was younger) or Bill Murray. They have an onscreen presence that's just rock solid, to a point where they almost don't have to do anything and they're entertaining. Leo does not have this quality. Not saying that deserves an Oscar either -- Bill Murray was nominated for Best Male Lead in Lost in Translation when his performance was just that of 'Bill Murray in Japan'. And I've seen the guy do way better, like Rushmore.

I think the negativity toward DiCaprio stems from his deserving of an Oscar having more to do with the movies his been in rather than the performances he's given in them.
Would you say then that Jack Nicholson was coasting on his boundless charisma in One Flew Over the Cukcoo's Nest? If so I can't say your wrong, it's all subjective on that note, but I'd say he wasn't. I think he got the Oscar because the movie was so profound in the way it tackled a really difficult, heartbreaking issue. I think it is fair to say that some people have won best actor in years where other people probably deserved it more because of the attention the film they starred in got. I'd say this may even be the case with The Revenant but looking over the roster of previous Best Actor winners, I still see no reason why DiCaprio doesn't belong.

Edit: Also, I agree with you about Bill Murray and Rushmore. It's not my favorite Bill Murray film, but it is some of his best work as an actor.

It's just the silly outcry over his lack of an Oscar by audiences over the past few years, like he's the persecuted messiah of acting, gravely suffering for his ideals.

Should have won it for Inception, but something similar happened to Julie Andrews so, what ever works.

I must say though, what I enjoyed more than anything else was the schadenfreude from Star Wars getting crap nominations and then loosing them all.

Not entirely. I think early Nicholson relied less on his scenery-chewing ability, entertaining as it is. It's been a while since I saw Cukcoo's Nest, but I seem to remember his acting being a bit more nuanced back then. I would certainly say Louis Fletcher deserved the Oscar she got as nurse Ratchet.

But I guess that goes into the question of whether someone deserves an Oscar for just being who they are onscreen, even if the end result is mesmerizing. I'd say Joe Pesci rightfully won an Oscar for Goodfellas, because I don't think anyone else could've made that role as unpredictably scary as he did. But it was ultimately just him kind of being himself.

I think it is fair to say that some people have won best actor in years where other people probably deserved it more because of the attention the film they starred in got.
Sometimes even in the same movie. I know I was a bit miffed when Christof Waltz won an Oscar for his by-the-numbers performance in Django, when Samual L. Jackson was absolutely brilliant as the sinister house slave.

In other Oscar news, Fury Road won 6 of them ( film editing).
But the film editing was pretty horrible. Especially the bits of the cars moving which were played at double speed looked so horribly bad.
Actually no, you could basically teach a film editing class using Fury Road as the sole example.

What you're taking issue with is direction. Editing is something else entirely.

Meanwhile Leonardo DeCaprionyan keeps getting snubbed.

Sorry I couldn't find the English clip.

Fair enough.

I don't get some of the negativity in this thread. Even if you dislike his performance, you atleast gotta be glad about putting that tired meme to death.

I mean it wasn't bad, but a large part of the movie the dude is just grunting and walking around. By comparison, I felt Tom Hardy was much better.
That's funny, cause one could've say that's exactly what Hardy was doing in Fury Road:p Haven't seen the Revenant yet, though, so i can't say anything about him in that.

It's simply been replaced with a different kind on the same subject. The bear is getting popular, for example.

And of course he got an Oscar for an Oscar bait movie that was at best mediocre. He has finally found out how to create Oscars.

Seriously, he's not a good actor, how does he have such a massive fan base?
Sexy look + large budget = success.

Seriously that should be the big news here. Fury Road was a good movie, sure, but it wasnt Oscar material good. The costumes were standard post apocalypse, the editing wasnt nothing special (well the storm looked cool), make-up was once agian stnadard apocalypse, im not even sure what they mean by production design. Sound was good though, i guess.

Since when did Disney own the Oscars? Because the video has been copyright blocked by Disney Enterprises.
Disney owns half of entertainment industry already, they may as well own Oscars.
