Would you say then that Jack Nicholson was coasting on his boundless charisma in One Flew Over the Cukcoo's Nest? If so I can't say your wrong, it's all subjective on that note, but I'd say he wasn't. I think he got the Oscar because the movie was so profound in the way it tackled a really difficult, heartbreaking issue. I think it is fair to say that some people have won best actor in years where other people probably deserved it more because of the attention the film they starred in got. I'd say this may even be the case with The Revenant but looking over the roster of previous Best Actor winners, I still see no reason why DiCaprio doesn't belong.Casual Shinji said:Some actors can coast by on their boundless charisma, like Jack Nicholson (when he was younger) or Bill Murray. They have an onscreen presence that's just rock solid, to a point where they almost don't have to do anything and they're entertaining. Leo does not have this quality. Not saying that deserves an Oscar either -- Bill Murray was nominated for Best Male Lead in Lost in Translation when his performance was just that of 'Bill Murray in Japan'. And I've seen the guy do way better, like Rushmore.Gorrath said:Eh, all I can say in return is that I don't see what you see, entirely. But even if he's the sort of actor you describe, where he just plays his usual role and the character is him, there are people who have won Oscars with that. The prime example being Jack Nicholson who's won best actor twice for that shtick. I think DiCaprio is better than Matt Damon but I think Brad Pitt is a fine actor as well, so to me that comparison doesn't speak badly for DiCaprio.
I'm not saying DiCaprio is one of the greatest of all time, but in comparison to other actors who've won an Oscar for best actor/actress, I don't see how he doesn't stand up. If Jane Fonda and Jack Nicholson can each have two, why can't DiCaprio have one?
I think the negativity toward DiCaprio stems from his deserving of an Oscar having more to do with the movies his been in rather than the performances he's given in them.
Edit: Also, I agree with you about Bill Murray and Rushmore. It's not my favorite Bill Murray film, but it is some of his best work as an actor.
