An action flick about Sherlock Holmes? I will reserve my judgment. It could work out or bomb horribly.
I am predicting it will be average and many will see and many will not. To me it seems like another attempt at Indiana Jones.

Here is a rather funny little interview which basically says no one tries to actually get into parts anymore and people are dumb.

What is boggling me is how badly Sir. Doyle is rolling around in his grave.

I guess it's the rule of all new movies based on a pre-existing IP:

"We must ruin the IP for fans everywhere."

I would agree, but Sherlock Holmes is a classic. Classic's are fair game for movies.

What about Lord of the Rings? That was a book long before it was a movie. Same with Dune, Clockwork Orange, etc. Books are some of the best ways to make money off films since the world is already created, you just expand upon it.

And I doubt they will be making Sherlock Holmes into tits and swears. While that would be an awesome movie, we have to wait for the sequel for that one.
Yes but LOTR was adapted WELL, and was not completely massacred for the satiation of the action obsessed morons who will go to anything
The movie hasn't even come out yet, how do you know it will bomb? You don't!
Yes, but based on the fact that Sherlock Holmes, the renowned DETECTIVE, is now going to be taking part in an "action flick" as the OP puts it, means it is not true to the source material. Therefore it is a bad adaptation, I can't think of a single case where taking liberites to the extent of pretty much completely changing the source material with the adaptation has yielded good results

Well I can't hate it until I see it but I'm going to. However I can't complain that people drive into old ideas, due to things growing a bit like the Sahara desert in the great river of new ideas.
However, I accept you as writers have a golden jewel(to writers at least) called poetic licence allowing you to do anything with our favourite titles. But at least pay some credence to the original ideas behind it especially the principal ones. The reason being some things are popular for a reason, that they're good and people like them. Bungie understood this and made a killing in something that should really have been thrown out after the second instalment.
Also pay attention to the fans, usually a good move, but of course not always, people are experts and take degrees for a reason after all.

Wait what? You confuse me good sir! What does this have to do with making something popular? I am mad that they are turning a fantastic book into a quagmire of stupid over compensating man juice!

No, no, and a thousand times no, this is not a good idea. I hope the movie bombs.
it shall
Nonsence! the movie will probably suck, and have pointless explosions, CURSE YOU HOLLYWOOD!, but millions of people will watch it and make it a crappy hit because of who its about, i know ill watch it.

And the Butler did it!
You just ruined the whole movie for me!!! Now all I hate to look forward to is explosions and partial nudity, yay society, when crap can sell incredible well based on nothing but pointless action, but when something actually revolutionary comes along they have to settle for a cult following.

What the hell you guys?! It is directed by Guy Richie, stars Robert Downey Jr and Mart Strong and has one of the writers from Sherlock Holmes Vs. Jack the Ripper! How can you not be thrilled by it?

The only name I recognize there is Downey, which gives me some hope at least...

Please, oh please don't let this thing fail terribly.

Mark Strong is most notable for the chrismatic bady in Star Dust. Guy Richie is the min behind Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. And he's directing Downey Jr!

Actually, at this point I'm getting my shotgun ready. Go watch Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Those movies are... I wouldn't say amazing, but they are fun, fast and have great scripts. If not, I will hunt you. *Glares*

I hear they're having Richard Dean Anderson revise his role as McGuyver to play Holmes' son who travels back in time from the future to help him on a case.

Actually, Robert Downey Jr. could work as Sherlock. He was a cocaine (or was it heroin?) addict. And for some reason, I could really see Downey Jr. as a drug addict.
Sherlock was an opiate addict. There are references in some of the books to his smoking opium and injecting morphine and cocaine.

I'll reserve judgment until I see at least a preview. I do hope it's not being turned into a cheap action flick, though.

Sorry I made a very vague attempt at actually making a point. But my idea was that by the sounds of it the forthcoming movie will be none of these. As the original Sherlock Holmes was popular.

So I just made a mess out of saying that I think it will be rubbish. However I'll probably still go and see it, just so that when I see it's rubbishness in person I can rant about it with some gravitas.

Sorry again.

I am still in Limbo whether or not I will see it. Perhaps when I see some actual trailers I might change my mind but I have this really bad feeling in the pit of my stomach that there are going to be explosions and that just makes me face palm. Thank you for clarifying also.

Has anyone actually read a Sherlock Holmes story? I can't speak for the single novel but the short stroies were utter shite! Each of them has a lengthy descriptive introduction, and then suddenly ends with all the loose ends wrapped up! Take "Five Orange Pips" for example. A man comes to Holmes for help because his father and uncle were killed after recieving five orange pips and he's also recieve them. After a lengthy talk with the man, he gets killed on the way to his hotel and Holmes looks at a book on his shelf which tells him the culprits are the KKK. He resolves to send the assassins five pips to scare them but they never get them as they're shipwrecked on the way back to America. You can't tell me that's good writing!

If they make a movie out of this rubbish they can't make it any worse!
