If you want to see some crazy religion inspired architecture then you should check out Gaudi's "Church of the Holy Family" in Barcelona. I visited some years ago, totally blew me away

Ah, La Sagrada Familia, I was going to bring that up. I was there over the summer, absolutely amazing. Speaking of Gaudi, have you been to Parc Guell? [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_g%C3%BCell] Not religious architecture, but still...amazing.

Also, while in France, I went to a church designed by Matisse, seen here [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapelle_du_Rosaire_de_Vence], near Vence. I personally didn't like it, as it felt oppressive inside (small + stark white walls with simple drawings in black + very simple colors where there are any = claustrophobia), but it's still quite interesting.

Last one, a Basilica [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_Our_Lady_of_the_Pillar] in Zaragoza. You feel like an ant when you're inside it.

EDIT:Just to clarify, I've been to all the sites talked about in the above post, as well as others. I felt it would be a bit too obvious to mention Notre Dame de Paris or Sacre Coeur. though.
Yea I've been in his park. I hung out there quite a while, perfect place to just sit and look around. Such an amazing athmosphere there, he really has an incredible architectural style.

Would have loved to see Matisse's church, even if it's only for the novelty. On that topic: I'd also love to see the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas. I've seen the paintings in the exhibition in the Tate, but I bet they would be a lot more astounding in the inside of the church.

Trust me, you didn't miss much missing Matisse's Chapel. I'm not claustrophobic like, at all, but I still get shivers thinking about that place.

EDIT:Oh yeah, forgot to mention; I went there as part of a school program, and one of my teachers actually freaked out in the Chapel and had to leave. It really isn't a comfortable place.

Mhh..usually I just love to experience these sites, the more unusual the better.
I think Rothko's church is really somber and depressingly small, too. You can tell that the design is succesful if it had such a strong impact on you.

But yea, I wouldn't exactly want to pray there :p

I actually felt a bit sick after going there, and as I said in my edit, one of my teachers actually had to leave. It isn't even just the size of the place, it's the starkness of the colors; white walls, soft yellow and green stained-glass windows, black paintings on the wall...it sounds pretty but in person it's just so...oppressive is the only word.

It's a conversation piece, eh? :p

Yea, the more you describe it the more I want to see it. Ahhh, back then art still used to be strong.

I really can't put words to how profoundly uncomfortable that building made me. And poor Madame Hoffman...she was already disdainful of religion at the best of times.

Jesus, stop describing it. I might just take a trip down to France.

That'd be such sweet irony if attending a church could lead you to collapse or die of a stroke just because of the strange vibe.

Anyone been to the Rothko Chapel? I'd like to know what it's like there...

Many of the remaining old European Synagogues have interesting design features. Unfortunately so few are left due to the Holocaust. However, those that do remain are quite intriguing and combine a lot of different design elements from both the norms from the time periods in which they were built, but also a lot of other things as well.

Here's some more. Firstly, we have a Brazilian monument that is an oh-so-tasteful reminder of a prominent religion over there (probably Roman Catholic). The name is "O Cristo Redentor," which is "Christ the Redeemer." Here it is:

And here we have an old picture of a Greek temple or two:

And here's an Indian Temple to round it out:

We also have Hindu altars
**metaphorically spits out drink** Alter? Alter?! Hindus have much more than just alters...

Though, my absolute favourite religious building has to be the Lotus Temple [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_Temple] I saw to my visit to Delhi. It's a beautiful thing to see at night, with all the lights reflecting off the temple, and frankly, the image doesn't do it justice.

Yeesh! Just talk about the buildings! We don't want another religious topic! Goto one of the many that are floating around if you want to discuss theology and philosophy.
This is about architecture.

EDIT:
Check this out from Cambodia:
I love that! :D Being a nature love I like the way it's bounced back.

A Buddhist temple in Kyoto. If only the garden where I work was as large and life-filled. :(

Islamic mosques and such are more my style. I adore those gigantic nipples peaking domes.

Since there's a lack of Christian churches on here, I thought I'd post a couple. One of these churches is MY church. Since I found the image and all, I figured I'd include it with the batch. Have fun guessing. Actually, two of them are my church organization, which probably narrows it down quite a bit if anyone's boring enough to figure out how to read the URLs.

*snip*
Is yours the first one?

Nope. I don't usually take the time to look at it properly, but my church has some fairly interesting architecture for an American church. I mean, it's no Daoist Temple or anything with lotus gardens and such, but it's got a pretty neat design.

Anyway, it's...
Picture #2 from that group of four. Kinda cool, isn't it?
