you know, Metroid Prime was re-released in the Metroid Prime Trilogy on the Wii. Sure that's only one time but it DID happen.

Excellently done, Yahtzee. I like these kinds of side-by-side comparisons and would like to see more.

I hope Yahtzee takes some time to do a ZP review of Metroid Prime like he did with Shadow of the Colossus. That game could stand some serious revisiting from the gaming community.
Give it time; he might do a retro review if it's a slow release period, or even tomorrow to balance out Lost Planet 3's inherent crapiness.

Metroid Prime is one of my all-time favourite games, and while I'm always extremely happy to get a followup the series suffers from an unfortunate side effect which I call 'original formula works best'. In the series this would be: Metroid, Super Metroid, and Metroid Prime. Metroid works best when you're stranded alone on a planet with nothing but a pea shooter, and gradually obtain powerups as you work your way through a variety of levels. Problem is since unlike Link Samus is a re-occurring character it starts getting kind of silly when you have to get beat up by Ridley or whatever at the start of every game to put you back to a blank slate.

Though maybe a little bit of retconning would work. Change the story/setting up so that the powerups left behind by the birdy people only work for that specific planet. Being a badass space bounty hunter you could make the 'space Samus' pretty powerful, but when she lands on a planet it's a new game every time.

Yahtzee, no need to beat around the bush with us. We all know that when you say "Other 3D metroid games" you mean other M. What other games does Samus act like a stripper in? Echos? Corruption?
Not necessarily. While Other M is the biggest offender, in Prime 2 and 3 you can see that Samus is starting to look more cartoonish and conventionally attractive. In comparison, the portrait of Samus you see at the end of the first game is that of a professional mercenary that gives no fucks about looks because that's not part of her job.

Also Yahtzee likes to use hyperbole. You should know this buy now.

Ehhhh...I'd hardly call the first one ugly. And yes, the one from echos is an abomination of life but I don't see anything wrong with the one in Corruption. She looks rather stoic and professional there too. Let's also remember that we only ever see her helmet off at the beginning of corruption, the end of corruption and echos, and after the first major boss in corruption because she takes it off to throw up before slapping it back on and going back to work. Not to mention I think the one from Prime doesn't look cartoony just because the hardware back then wasn't as good, it just doesn't look that well rendered.

I don't really see how these games can even faintly compare to the shit that other M pulled.
I never used the word 'ugly'. She's normal-looking. And there's nothing wrong with that. And Yahtzee likes to exaggerate, so you ought to take what he says with a grain of salt.

I never said that there was anything wrong with that. I'm just saying that her new designs are perfectly fine is all.

I see I wasn't the only one who got a whiff of the Metroidvania tropes within Lost Planet 3.

Ah, Metroid Prime. A game that not only holds a spot in the top five games of the last generation but should be required study material for anyone looking to get into proper game design. Especially in the areas of level design and world building.

Lost Planet 3, on the other hand, deserves a place in the bargain rental bin at best.

Sad to say, many of the bigger game series nowadays deserve the same treatment.

It's surprisingly hard to find any game that is atmospheric and focuses on the gameplay rather than some written down narrative. At least in the AAA genre. Then again, video games seem to be following the pattern of Television shows: All that matters is the ratings and not if the game itself is actually any good or not. =(

As a creepily devoted Metroid fan who considers Prime to be the apex of gaming, I approve.

"Metroid Prime, which was a really good game"

Really Ben?

Metroid Prime is a good game?

I'm sorry, but I have to object here, Metroid Prime is a first person shooter, and thus by definition completely devoid of creativity, fun, or any other value what so ever.

[This message was brought to you by the Bob Chipman school of video game analysis]
Metroid Prime is classified by Nintendo as a [a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:First-person_adventures"]first person adventure[/a] not a first person shooter. As are its sequels.

Damn. I really want to play LP3, 'cause I've been spinning the soundtrack on spotify for the past 3 weeks and it's sooo good. Jack Wall still got the touch. Is it really horrible? I haven't watched the review in fear of getting spoiled.

Glad to see people brought up the fact of the Prime Trilogy collection. And in all three of those, Samus only takes her suit off in the ending when the mission is over, and even then only if you got a good collection rate. So we all know which Metroid game he's referring to when talking about the 'blond stripper'.

Coincidentally, I'm currently doing a 0% run of Prime, currently up to Research Lab Hydra. Does Lost Planet even have collectibles? Would it be possible to attempt the game without them?

I love mech games, but by all appearances they've actually dialled that back in the third game. Why? Go full Pacific Rim with Akrid replacing Kaiju!

Now I really want to play Metroid Prime but I don't own it. According to my fellow anonymous fellows on the internet it was released on the Wii so maybe I'll give it a try. Funny, I never expected XP to make me want to get a game.

Yahtzee, when you mention "later 3D metroid games" are you talking about Metroid Prime 2? Because yes Samus does remove her suit down to her "zero suit" but it is at the very end of the game that she does so.

I don't know if it was "released" on the wii, but the wii can play gamecube games.

Actually, why aren't we considering Lost Planet 3 shovelware? It pretty well describes it as well as the current Call of Duty games. There's passion behind some aspects of the mentioned games, but the finished package is... kind of doing something we've all seen before so many times.

I'm afraid most games suffer when compared to Metroid Prime, everything about that game is made so well, I still wonder how they managed to make everything so good looking and smooth that long ago. Till I remembered the Gamecube was a powerhouse when used properly.

I'll go as far enough to say Metroid Prime trumps all other Metroid games, including Super Metroid. I may not agree with Yatzee much on a lot of game related opinions, but he is absolutely right on all the points he brought up concerning Metroid Prime.
