Reveredtour Intermission
__________________________________________________

To Master Azstrog Cursewarmth of the Witch of Silencing,

My lord, I'm sure you'll be pleased to hear that your plan has worked out perfectly. Master Smunstu has been slain, as you had asked. I had managed to make almost all of my soldiers loyal to your cause, so when Smunstu foolishly decided to lead a siege herself she was surrounded by enemies. Disposing of her was rather easy, as she barely had time to react after her own beak dog knocked her down and tore her head open.

The Spiders of Stability now lack a leader, and the leader you choose to install as a puppet will no doubt take control with minimal resistance. It is a shame that we had to resort to such extreme measures. I served many years under Azstrog, but her refusal to cooperate with your kingdom could not be allowed. The goblins must no longer be divided if we are to survive. We must combine our forces and drive the invaders out of the land that rightfully belongs to us. As per your instructions, the dwarves of Reveredtour shall be the first to go.

Map of Reveredtour [http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/9545/reveredtour.png]

As you can see from this map, the dwarves have begun to design their pathetic fort with our attacks in mind. Walls have been built surrounding the walkways, preventing our archers from firing upon the dwarves from outside. Scouts are examining the fort to find flaws in their design, but if there's one thing these short drunkards are good at its building walls. Trolls could beat on them for days and not even make a dent. It's a shame to, for if we could get in the dwarves would have no chance of resisting us.

The total population of Reveredtour is only 58 dwarves. We have over twice as many soldiers, and unlike the dwarves they are all trained and armed. The actual military of Reveredtour, if you can really consider it to be one, consists only of 8 poorly trained soldier led by 2 commanders of marginal talent. I'd credit their current lack of strength to our attacks, but really the reason they are so weak is simply because these dwarves are idiots. I know that dwarves in general are about as logical as an ogre, but the dwarves here are exceptionally stupid. They kill and injure themselves on a regular basis. For example, we found a bloated dwarf corpse lying on the banks of the river, no doubt the result of one their ridiculous projects. Well we went to feed the corpse to the beak dogs when one of the soldiers noticed a journal next to it. Turns out this was actually a collection of medical reports. Just look at this;

From what I gather the S signifies an inability to stand, and the G represents impaired grasping abilities usually from the loss of a hand or entire arm. So apparently a significant chunk of the population has crippling health problems. You'll also notice that both the commanders appear to be missing an arm, as if the soldiers here weren't a big enough joke already.

Though I hate to admit it, but despite our efforts the fort does remain fairly prosperous, assuming you ignore the constant death.

Not sure how they are managing to create such wealth with everyone in there dropping like flies. Doesn't matter though, since all that food and wealth won't save them when we find a way in. And we will find a way in. I pledge to continue campaigns against the dwarves of Reveredtour until their fort is nothing but a gaudy wreck. I'll send you another letter once we make some progress. I wish you luck in uniting our two nations, though I'm sure you will not need it.

From Astruk Astolatu, Pikemaster and General of the Spiders of Stability.

If the elf traders come during this siege, will we get a nice story about goblin hatred for the pointy-eared freaks as well?

First off, I would like to request Dorfification in the next migrant wave. If there is one.

Secondly, may I present a solution for dealing with these goblin scum?

Since the goblins seem to be coming in absurdly large sieges (bigger than those my 220 dorf fort faces.), the only reasonable responce is something that allows your meer 58 dwarves to take on five times their number. In short, a superweapon.

Since you have already declared adamantine and magma off limits for various reasons, I recommend a biblical flooding of the map. By extending the workshop platform ot the left, and then putting in a pumpstack down to the ocean, and then extending it upwards at least 10 z-levels, your workers would be safe from goblin archery.

Then it would just be a simple matter of putting an aquaduct out towards the goblin lines. Put windmills on top of the aquaduct to power it, and once the floodgates are released, a good number of your invaders can be swept into the river/ocean/moat.

Advantages to this plan:

1) Unlike magma-based plans, no magma-safe everything is required in construction. This can be done with whatever trashstone you happen to have lying around.

2) Flowing water will push units. Proper outlet placing would allow for pushing of almost all enemy units into one of your pre-existing bodies of water. This can work for future sieges too.

3) Your map is flat. All of it will flood simultaneously.

4) The ocean's water supply is infinite. No running out midway thru execution as if you had a resivour.

Disadvantages to this plan:

1) Your stated disinclination for pumps and their use.

2) Dwarfpower intensive project probably taking several seasons at least. Unlikely to be completed in time to impact this particular siege.

3) No magma. :(

4) Sweeping goblins into river to drown them results in unrecoverable goblinite.

Don't worry, I have a number of plans I'm going to try and put into action. Plans that have the potential to fail horribly of course, but I don't think it's possible to build a safe super weapon.

Chapter 70: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

1st Granite, 1056, Early Spring

Huh, according to the calendar it's a new year. That last year felt like it lasted forever. Maybe it was because of all the invasions. And the death. And being put in jail for most of winter. Doesn't look like our goblin situation has improved either...no matter! I have a cunning plan. Several of them actually. The goblins aren't going to stop attacking until one of us is dead and gone. Fine, we'll just have to learn to deal with that. I already have plenty of ideas of how to work around the presence of a siege, and some others to hopefully dispose of one.

5th Granite, 1056, Early Spring

One of the crafters has been acting weird, keeping to herself and muttering random junk. Looks like it's another one of those strange moods! Should I consider that to be a good thing? I'm honestly not sure. Well, I can't see it causing any problems. We have an abundance of supplies so unless she needs some exotic item I've never even heard of everything should be fine.

I just hope it's not another rope.

Also I've decided to take a rest in the hospital, as my hand has been bothering me lately. I think Silent Thunder actually managed to do more damage to it than I initially realized. Lying down in the crypt for two months didn't help with that either.

It should be fine though. I just need to get Rowan to look at it.

...oh yeah. The only "doctor" other than me is Silent Thunder...well she can't be that bad, right?

9th Granite, 1056, Early Spring

You know what we could use right now? Magma. I'm not sure what we need it for at the moment, but considering how much dwarves talk about it I figure it'd be good to have some. Problem is there isn't magma anywhere near here. But one thing I remember from my geology lessons is that there's a big magma sea that most scientists believe spans across the entire world! It's deep underground, below the abyss actually. Never been that deep before. The capital had a few roads that lead down there, but civilians weren't allowed in them due to potential danger. Still, I doubt there's anything really bad down there. What could live in magma anyways?

15th Granite, 1056, Early Spring

I was right! There's a huge amount of magma right below Reveredtour. Seems I actually told the diggers to go to deep, since the chamber they were working in was flooded with magma upon locating the sea. Fortunately they were able to get out before the magma engulfed them.

So yeah, tons of magma down there. Though really I'm not sure how I would be able to make use of it when it's so deep underground. I do have one idea though.

17th Granite, 1056, Early Spring

I've been attempting to instruct Silent Thunder about how to properly fix the injuries I sustained. Since I'm not that great a doctor myself it's not exactly going well, but she is trying her hardest.

I just wish her hardest was better. I'm still not sure how she managed to sew two of my toes together when she was supposed to be fixing a compound fracture. Thank the gods for booze.

22nd Granite, 1056, Early Spring

The goblins still haven't moved away from their camp out in the wastes. That's good for us, though I must admit their inactivity is a bit unnerving. No doubt they have to be plotting something; I'm just not sure what as they give no indication as to what their plans are. Still, their distance means that most civilians are able to continue working without being bothered by their presence.

26th Granite, 1056, Early Spring

That crafter finally got all the materials she needed and has started working on her project. Seems like it took her forever to gather everything she wanted. Hopefully that means she is going to make something really neat!

1st Slate, 1056, Mid-Spring

It's always something with these forge masters. Once again they refuse to produce the steel gear Root requested, this time citing a lack of fuel as the problem.

Which would be a legitimate complaint if it wasn't their responsibility to produce fuel. Rather than burn some more coal, like they should be doing, they are instead just whining about having to do so. In a few days they'll probably stop being so stubborn and do their jobs. I've heard that some of the dwarves in the far away kingdoms use special kinds of forges that run off magma. No need to constantly refuel them. It'd be nice to have something like that here in Reveredtour, but with the only source of magma so deep underground I'm not sure it's a viable option at the moment.

3rd Slate, 1056, Mid-Spring

Well, the crafter finished the artifact she was working on. She stood in the dining hall, raised it into the air, and demanded that we be in awe of her masterpiece.

But it's really hard to be impressed by a bracelet, no matter how many tacky decorations you shove onto it.

You can't even wear this thing! If you try to put it on a bunch of spikes will just dig into your hand. Why do so many of these artifacts have to be covered in painful spikes? Apparently she calls this bracelet the "playful wood". I don't get it. There isn't any wood on this thing, so how does that make any sense?

Root suggested we try selling it to the elves, assuming they actually get into the fort this year. Selling an artifact would greatly upset the dwarf that created it, and I'm sure Root is aware of this. Really I think she just wants to see one of the elves try and put the damn thing on.

You still averse to using pumps? Or what are you planning with that sea?

...Is it going to be a massive trapdoor?

Be thankful I didn't go with my first idea, which was to let the forge masters wear it until they make my bloody spears.

And I don't mean around their wrists.

o_o

If I was a forgemaster I'd be working pretty damned hard?

Is that why it's called the Playful Wood?

Yeah I'm aware of that. Really most artifacts don't do anything but inflate your fortress value, which attracts migrants but at the same time also attracts goblins.

Also I think this is the first update in a long time where a dwarf didn't die.

So I'm a doctor now. Cool. But heres a thought, instead of carting the magma up,why not use the magma sea as an obsidian generator, and build a platform to drop on the goblins?

Sucess! We should celebrate! With booze! And magma!

I also cannot wait for the magma. With the moat related deaths, how can using magma possible go wrong?
