Catapults can only end well! And achieve alot! Somehow! Maybe! Though as mentioned above, alternate ammo would be nice...like elfs...and nobles...
sadly only rocks (boulders) can be used in the catapults. (I'm doing tests with burning coal - don't try it at home kids :D)

ballistae would probably work a bit better. also, don't forget that catapults and ballistae only work on the same z-level.

(p.s. but yeah, kudos for going after the siege engines!)

Only thing of note was that Vallorn actually came to talk. I hadn't seen him since he left the hospital after regaining his strength.

Stinthad: "Vallorn! What a pleasant surprise! Are your legs still feeling okay?"
Vallorn: "Much better now. Still causing me trouble, but considering they didn't even work a month ago it's a big improvement."
Stinthad: "Glad to hear that. Is something troubling you though?"
Vallorn: "Yes. It seems that Commander Root is being completely irrational, and I want you to talk to her about it."
Stinthad: "What exactly do you mean?"
Vallorn: "She refuses to let me serve in the military! As a proud dwarven soldier it is my duty to fight for Reveredtour, but she denies me on account of my legs being busted. I can walk now though! Isn't that good enough?"

I wanted to agree with Vallorn, I really did, but I knew that Root was right. Vallorn might be able to walk now, but he's only able to do so through the use of a crutch.

He can't move very fast, and no doubt trying to fight whilst supported by a crutch would be very difficult. I feel that if I let him into the military, he'd just end up getting killed. He might be okay with dying in the line of duty, but I can't help but think about his children. In good conscience, I just can't let him fight.

Stinthad: "Um...well I hate to say it but I agree with her."
Vallorn: "What?!? Why?!?"
Stinthad: "You can barely walk! If I sent you out to fight you'd just lag behind everyone, or even worse get hurt!"
Vallorn: "That's what Root said! You're honestly telling me that she can be the god damn commander with one arm, but I'm not allowed in because of this crutch?!?"
Stinthad: "Look it's not that bad! You don't have to fight to be useful! There's plenty of other stuff you can do to help!"
Vallorn: "Like what?"
Stinthad: "...hauling?"

Hauling might not be the most dignified of jobs, but there really isn't much else he can do. I'm sure he'll get used to it though. He has a family now, and I'm sure they'll support him no matter what he's doing.

Hauling is the safest way to build up crutch-walker skill until it reaches high enough for you to keep up with everyone else. Best time to complain would probably be after a season or two, once your walking speed picks back up.

What's the backlog of people waiting for dwarf names look like? do I have any hope if I ask to put "Catface" on the list?

I'm only asking because I was playing this weekend and my fourth migrant wave had TWENTY-SIX dwarves in it. that's 26. So I thought I'd throw my name in the hat just in case. and yes, I was pretty much playing this game all weekend, AND I got two of my friends hooked on it too.

How long does it usually take for goblins or other bad guys to show up? I haven't been attacked by anything yet, I'm considering starting a fort in a haunted area just to make things interesting.

It can take a couple of years before goblins will show up if your fort is far from them. The waves they send at you should become stronger and stronger, so lasting longer should mean more challenge. Or you could have had all your goblin civilizations wiped out during world generation.

Chapter 82: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

3rd Obsidian, 1056, Late Winter

I swear the forge masters are doing something wrong. They burn through all our fuel in less than a week. Even when you assign everyone to make fuel for a month they still consume it all in the blink of an eye. It's gotten to the point where I'm not sure the diggers will actually be able to keep up with their rate of fuel consumption. But we need more equipment! What a frustrating situation this is. If only we had some sort of renewable fuel source. That would make things a lot easier on everyone.

9th Obsidian, 1056, Late Winter

The farmers keep complaining about this weird gurgling noise coming from the lake. And while there does seem to be some odd sound coming from it, I'm sure it's something natural. I mean, you look into the water and you don't see anything out of the ordinary. There's no monster lurking beneath the surface waiting to drag them to their deaths. They're just being paranoid. If there was a monster, what would it be waiting for? Surely it would have attacked by now.

15th Obsidian, 1056, Late Winter

There's been this obnoxious screeching coming from the wastes for the past few days. It's not the goblins either, since they seem to be just as bothered by it as we are.

And it's weird; I swear I've heard this noise somewhere before. It reminds me of something. But what could it be...wait.

Oh fucking hell.

VULTURES!!! PROTECT THE FOOD!!! THROW ROCKS AT THEM!!! I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU DO JUST KEEP THEM AWAY!!!!

19th Obsidian, 1056, Late Winter

I hate these birds! They're so annoying! As soon as we spot them they decide to fly around the fort in circles rather than actually swoop in to steal something. I know as soon as I send the military away the vultures are just going to fly in and steal all the food! What we really need are archers. Dwarves than can kill something without actually needing to get next to it. These vultures wouldn't be so annoying with a bolt piercing their wings.

Shame nobody here knows how to handle a bow. Root says bows are pansy elf weapons. She needs to stop judging everything based on what elves do.

22nd Obsidian, 1056, Late Winter

Goblins are leaving again. Between their inability to get in and the constant annoyance that is the vultures, most of their soldiers didn't feel like it was worth sticking around. Pretty soon the whole force fell apart and they were all heading off into the wastes.

Victory! Well, victory in the sense that they're gone at least. Finally we can lower the drawbridge again. It's been a while since I took a walk on the beach. I think I'll go take Ingiz and Lorbam along with me. Plus I'll be able to get away from these damn birds.

25th Obsidian, 1056, Late Winter

So upon hearing that lockdown was over, Root of all Evil ordered all the soldiers to stop guarding the food stockpile and instead head out into the wastes. Why? Well according to her it was "looting time". This apparently consists of searching for useful gear on the corpses outside, mainly the dwarven caravan guards.

I know we need the best gear available but this seems kind of...immoral. I mean, couldn't we at least bury them first rather than take their stuff and then leave their bodies lying out in the sun? These are fellow dwarves, and Root just views them as free stuff.

Oh shit, i haven't watched this in a while. Oh and i arrived as a migrant too? Sweet, mind telling me how i am and what kind of work i do? It's probably going to be a hauler or something, i always end up in boring positions i hate. But what the heck, maybe i will have a glorious death or something. Possibly involving punching all those vultures to death.

At least vultures give decent meat and bones in death and if caught, make a viable meat source. Buzzards only give you 2 slices, a skull, and a skin.

Makes more sense in believing in Gods like some dwarves. Good old Elven hatred kept my dad alive.

Dwarves get given better weapons in the Afterlife, even Goden knows that. If they can't be forged, then they'll have to come from the dead.
These are fellow dwarves, and Root just views them as free stuff.
There's an old Dwarf saying that goes somewhere upon the lines of "Well, he's not gonna need it."

Once the forgemasters get some coffins made, then they can get buried. At the moment, I'm more worried about the rampaging Goblin invasion. Not some silly birds.

Chapter 83: From the journal of Stinthad Kekimtobul

1st Granite, 1057, Early Spring

A new year has arrived! We celebrate its arrival by screaming at a bunch of vultures as they try and steal our plump helmets. These things just won't go away. It really sucks having them flying around screeching every hour of the day. Don't they ever sleep?

Well, aside from that things are actually going well. The military is keeping the caverns clear, work is progressing along as planned, and the hospital is empty! Not a single dwarf needs to be treated right now. The only real issue is that the forge masters keep running out of fuel, but I'm going to solve that problem soon.

See I've been doing a lot of research and found designs for magma forges. These forges can run indefinitely through the use of magma as a fuel source! The only downside to this is that the forge masters have to go deep underground to work. However considering how often they've been running out of fuel, I think it's worth it.

7th Granite, 1057, Early Spring

It's inevitable that eventually we will get a migrant who can use a crossbow, or perhaps one of the local residents can learn to do so. Either way, my plan to get at least one archer in Reveredtour will be carried out at some point. So I figure we might as well start preparing for it now.

Which is why I've ordered the construction of bolts. We're going to need plenty of ammunition and it's best to start producing it now rather than later and run the risk of running out at a critical moment.

See, I can use mandates to make stuff that's actually important! I don't just use it on what I want...though some more lay pewter statues sure would be nice. Damn, I wish I was allowed to make multiple mandates.

19th Granite, 1057, Early Spring

There's this huge column of adamantine sitting down in the caverns. It stretches all the way up to the ceiling, and probably goes a long way underground as well.

It's so pretty to look at...but at the same time I can't stand being around it. Every time I look at it my head starts to hurt, I hear all these weird screams and laughter, and sometimes I come close to passing out! I've never had that problem before, and the other dwarves don't seem to be bothered by the adamantine at all. In fact, a lot of them want me to dig some of it out, but I'm not sure about that. It just seems...wrong. I've got a bad feeling about it. The mere mention of the idea to Goden makes her furious, so it can't be a good idea anyways.

Though I will admit, the prospect of acquiring adamantine is quite tempting.

24th Granite, 1057, Early Spring

Excellent, a steady stream of iron bolts is already being produced. And now to ensure that we don't lose them, I have forbid the export of all bolts.

Granted we never sell bolts anyways, but it doesn't hurt to be careful. Now we just need to find a dwarf willing to use the crossbow. Hmm...hey, maybe there is something Vallorn can do that isn't hauling!

28th Granite, 1057, Early Spring

Despite our inability to kill them, the vultures seem to have flown off. I don't think they actually managed to get into the food stockpile this time either. I attribute this to the defensive walls that have been built to protect Reveredtour. Not only do they protect us from the goblins, but they also reduce the threat posed by the local wildlife!

6th Slate, 1057, Mid-Spring

I don't get these crundles. They always show up in huge groups and wander around aimlessly. They don't seem to be looking for food or trying to set up a nest. They just blunder through the caverns bothering the workers. The military cleans them up without a problem, but it's still irritating to always hear about a new crundle swarm showing up every month. I'd place some powerful guard animals down there to scare the crundles off, but they would just get killed when something powerful comes along. Like one of those weird forgotten beasts.

15th Slate, 1057, Mid-Spring

The diggers have almost finished excavating the chamber that will be used to build the magma forges. Some might think that working with magma is dangerous, especially given the...accidents. But I'm positive that won't happen again! See this doesn't even risk exposing the workers to magma flow. The chamber itself is located above the magma sea. In order to access the magma they need only carve a hole in the floor, some of which have already been dug. If these documents are correct, a magma forge need only be placed over exposed magma for it to function. Seems simple enough. What could possibly go wrong?

Nothing. Nothing could go wrong. I'm sure of this.

Crundle populations are truly set too high in caves. Who honestly wants to deal with 150-300 of the things per cave level they appear in?
