Just lost my first Dwarf Fortress to excessive lack of planning for Fun.
90 dwarves, a healthy farming system, even managed to pipe water across to an inner well from the local river. Traded quite well with the elves (despite slaughtering their first caravan because my broker couldn't figure out how to trade). I felt like Théoden smirking down at the Uruk'hai, I'd definitely conquered all that DF could throw at me.
Then the goblins came.
Out of 90 dwarves, 5 of them were in the militia. Barely trained, no combat experience. Only 16 goblins struck in the first invasion, but that was enough to obliterate all my standing forces and anyone I drafted into a temporary militia. There's a big blood bath just outside the entrance to my fortress, and now the remaining four goblins just sit outside, picking at the corpses littered across the ground.
Inside, there are three dwarves left. I had a small measure of hope when the fourth, the Mayor, was not only healthy and uninjured, but mentally healthy as well. Despite 80+ dwarves dying under her command she was "quite content" with how things were going. Up until she ran outside to grab a body and take it to the graveyard, got spotted and skewered by a goblin -.-
So now I have one soldier, who just died of thirst in his bed. One civilian, running around downstairs gibbering to herself, and one remaining dwarven child, just as cracked as the elder. I think I'm done here.
Tl;dr I must construct additional soldiery!
