GCS... The ultimate predator of the caverns. You should'nt have sent help. RandomID had been poisoned; he HAD to die. If the GCS had'nt killed him, the venom would have, a slow and painful death.
Darn. Looks like it will be a while yet till you can have some cute little cave spiders running around. Nice artifact that. Though shouldn't a statue commemorating Reveredtour show vultures bleeding all over the dining hall?
The AI fights in weird ways. Even when you give them weapons sometimes they try kicking their opponent, challenging them to old fashion fisticuffs, or just gnaw on their skull. Your militia captains can even give soldiers biting lessons.
Gah, just came across a very annoying little thing in my own fortress. Basically I ordered my Marksmen to wear leather armour, so I can use the heavy metal armour for my melee troops. Yet my Marksmen insist on stealing all the good armour, even though they have orders to wear leather. Dammit Dumed I made those gauntlets and high boots for the soldiers who need them! So how can I stop them from wearing it?

As far as I know a dwarf will never wear armor unless you specifically tell them to. However, you may have accidentally told them to wear whatever armor they want. The dwarves may also have put the armor on before you told them not to and refuse to take it off. Or the game just hates you and isn't working right.
I'd put the marksdwarves in heavy armor though. I don't know if there's any strict advantage to lighter armor but better protection is vital.
Another year has come to its end, and we seem to be starting the year with a clean slate so to speak. There are no major problems going on at the moment, with all issues having been resolved last month. Indeed, I'm quite confident that this year shall go even better than the last one.
A quick look at the map shows how we have complete control over our territory at the moment, and hopefully it shall stay that way. Next time the goblins arrive we'll have a few surprises ready for them. Should give us the edge we need to beat off another invasion with minimal casualties.
Our wealth continues to climb and the food stocks are plentiful. Indeed, our population of 80 has done a fantastic job of keeping the fortress up to speed. I must admit though, I grow weary of handling so many responsibilities. Perhaps it's time I delegated some of my less important tasks to other dwarves. There are many capable individuals here, I need not be in charge of all of the management.

After many months of hauling kimberlite to the surface, a sturdy barricade has been built around a large area directly south of Reveredtour. This area, which from this point on will be referred to as Bunker Hill, was secured as per the instructions of the mechanics. I'm still not sure what they are going to do here, but I suppose it will all become clear in due time.
Meanwhile, construction of the blood hexagon bowl is still underway. One of the bridges has been successfully built, however it was found that the largest possible size for a retractable bridges could not cover the entire pit. This is a simple problem to solve however, as we can just build a platform that covers the remaining space. The whole thing doesn't need to lift, just part of it. I refuse to start construction on the second bridge before this bridge is linked up to a lever. Should an invasion occur before the bridge was linked, it would merely provide the enemy with direct access to the fort.

Oh how happy, another dwarf has been born in Reveredtour! It is the first child of PurpleLemur and ChaoticKraus, who are no doubt swelling with pride. To my surprise they after named the child Cowabunga Jr., in memory of one of Reveredtour's fallen commanders.
Though it's really not that odd. After all, many dwarves have been named in memory of soldiers who died in the line of duty. It's just that Cowabunga wasn't exactly...um...you know what I'm not even going to finish that. It's not right to disrespect the dead!
I just hope this kid doesn't follow in his footsteps and lose an arm.

Construction of the road has met a stand still due to a lack of materials. Indeed we managed to deplete our entire tunnel tube log stockpile rather quickly. I tasked the woodcutters with cutting down any easily accessible tunnel tubes to be found in the lower areas of the fort, though in order to acquire a large amount they need to venture out into the caverns.
Fortunately, a large forest of tunnel tubes has been located. Unfortunately, it is located in the abyss. Still, I don't think the woodcutters will be in danger here. There have been no recent sightings of deadly creatures. The only matter of concern is the constant clicking coming from a swarm of peculiar creatures nested nearby.
Kraken's notes: Bugbats are certainly an odd bunch, but when compared to other creatures lurking in the deep they are pretty normal. Thankfully they aren't as deadly as them either. A single bugbat is rather weak and easily defeated. They make up for this by traveling in large swarms, but even then bugbats will have difficulty killing a fleeing dwarf. Not that it matters, since bugbats aren't particularly aggressive and will try to avoid combat in most cases. Bugbats are just nuisance in most cases. Due to their ability to fly, killing them can be somewhat difficult if you lack access to skill marksdwarves. However you can safely ignore then most of the time with no consequence.
I've never seen them before and can't identify them without a good look. Regardless, they don't seem to be very aggressive and are just keeping to themselves, so I see no reason to be concerned about their presence.

We have amassed an enormous number of undead and other vile creatures, and now dozens of them have been placed outside and linked to a single lever. This project started out small but now I believe there are enough beasts involved for it to pose a significant threat to any goblin horde. I don't expect them to win, but this many creatures running around unchecked should cause some real havoc. Come next siege I believe it will be time to release them.

Time sure does fly when nothing is going on. Well, at least nothing worth mentioning. I'm not used to all this peace and quiet. I keep expecting someone to burst in and tell me that a giant zombie whale is eating everyone in the dining hall, or something like that. That would be kind of absurd though, even for this place.
Work is still progressing well though. The protective wall built around the moat has expanded greatly. This should provide any animals we put in the moat with additional protection. To many of them have perished due to those crafty goblin marksmen.

Thanks to the hard work of both our masons and metalworkers, I now have a tomb fitting for a baroness!
Normally I wouldn't compliment a place where you store a body, but I think it's rather nice. It has masterfully crafted lay pewter statues lining the walls and wonderful pitchblende coffin sitting in the middle of the room. Pitchblende looks so nice, you'd think most stuff would be made from it. Anyways, with a tomb like this Reveredtour won't suffer petty insults from foreign nobles.
Though it's not really fitting for someone of my status to continue carrying out so many jobs. As such, I am beginning the process of delegating some of my less important tasks to other dwarves.
From this point on, Silent Thunder shall serve as the new medical chief. She no longer requires my aid. I taught her everything I know about medicine, which admittedly isn't much but that's beside the point. She was worried about taken over such an important role but I'm sure she'll do fine. It's not like the hospital has seen much use lately anyways.

Finding a new medical chief was a no-brainer, however I'm having trouble picking out a new broker. Brokers need to be comfortable dealing with all races and now enough about trading to ensure we make a good profit. However, most of the dwarves here aren't what I would call sociable. Finding a good replacement may take some time, but hopefully I'll have one lined up before the elves come next month.
Wait! I got it! I know exactly who should be broker!
I mean why not? Silent Thunder would make a decent broker. She has more social skills than most of the dwarves here. Plus she's used to listening to everything I say, so there's no concern over her ignoring my orders. This will work out just fine.

Well I was right about the bugbats not being an issue. However, another cavern dweller has been causing problems. Some kind of giant rat has been scaring off the workers. At least, I think it's a giant rat. It's hard to tell when it's engulfed in a huge cloud of miasma
Kraken's notes: As you might expect, giant rats are completely bland and forgettable creatures. They are only threatening due to their size, but even this isn't that big of an issue. Civilian dwarves can easily get away from it and soldiers will have no trouble cutting it up. Giant rats suck. They can potentially eat your food and guzzle some booze, but you'd have to be really careless to let one get anywhere near a food stockpile.
The only slightly interesting thing about them is that goblins can potentially use them as mounts during sieges. That's it.
Well if it is a giant rat I can't see it posing much of a threat. Giant or not, it's still just a rat. Pointy rodent teeth are no match for dwarven steel!
cage the ettin, then release it upon enemy seigers?
that WOULD be Fun
oh yeah, and pitchblende, also known as uraninite, is an ore of uranium. AKA, radioactive.
if radiation existed in DF, ooooh god you'd be screwed.
and BTW, microcline, I found out is not radioactive.

Really? I thought heavier armor slowed them down. Ah well, I'll just keep smitting and put them into some proper armor.
Also, it seems that no matter what kind of embarking position I pick, I never get the really bad stuff. I dumped myself into a Terrifying area without flux stone (meaning no steel unless I can import), yet all I get is the occasional harpy, which even my hunter can deal with, and early on some werewolves that were easily beaten to a pulp by the single guard I took with me. Well, given, one did cripple him permanently. That scar on his foot will never heal, and he's so slow now. Ah well, I might give him an honourary guarding position or something when my military can do without him.
Oh and apparently I have some badgermen that like Happy Slapping for some odd reason. Regardless, even this fortress is rather meek. I don't even need the double walls and moat I'm building at the moment.
heavy armour does slow them down, but the armour using skill netralises it once it's at legendary, and they get to legendary in that skill quickly IIRC.

Internet kraken! you git! you wiped out my fort with your monans! they broke down the doors, killed my military, and caused a tantrum spiral! *sulks in a corner*

I've said it before, but my mod is very much a work in progress, so don't expect everything to be fair and balanced. That said, I'm surprised monans managed to kill a fort. I didn't design them to be very dangerous. More tweaking is obviously required on my part.

being made of granite, having [NONAUSEA][NOEXERT][NO_DIZZINESS][NO_FEVERS] out makes it hard to kill them with anything except a pick, and the fact they are made of granite makes it so causing pain is EXTREMELY difficult. make them out of a softer material is the only way I can think of making them weaker.
aside from this, the mod is brilliant.
they also destroyed my cage traps. and the dorf's addiction to socks didn't help, as well as the fact every hit on the dorfs resulted in broken bones.
Just finished reading all the entries! Love the LP! Can I be dorfed? Military I hope, I just want to be part of the story since I am an attention whore :3 my name can be Alpha or Jakob. Either is fine.
