So, we've all seen them and we've all HATED them. Double standards, the "I am fine with someone doing something, but I don't want another person to do the same thing" sort of logic. The ones that basically just piss you off at the stupidity of them, since well they are almost always just hypocrites and people who want to defend what them and them alone like.

Here's a controversial one to kick off the thread. How if an Adventure Time/Regular Show fan goes on a thread or post about ponies and say there show is better, nobody complains. Yet when a brony goes on an Adventure Time/Regular Show thread or post and says that they prefer MLP, then BAM they're a ****** brony shoving their shit down people's faces. It's also fine for people to come onto pony threads and posts, show the rule 34/my little holocaust pictures and denounce all bronies as pathetic lifeforms who should all die. When nobody ever goes on Adventure Time/Regular Show threads and post their rule 34/weird shit side and denounce all their fans as pathetic lifeforms who should die. This just pisses me off since well, the only reason I can think it happens is because they don't like seeing "girly" ponies. Also, I'll believe the argument that bronies shove MLP down people's faces WHEN people stop going onto purely pony related threads and posting hate, shoving it down the brony's faces. But alas, it's much easier to hate than to like something, that's what life is like something and you can't change that.

I believe you just single-handedly killed your original thread topic with the chosen example. Controversial indeed.

{EDITED} Well, it's never intentional. But I do see your point, the Escapist can never not talk about MLP when it's mentioned in the OP of an unrelated topic in a positive light. Wonder how long this thread has left until it's derailed.

It gets kind of hazy when you try and accuse a group of double standards, since its more than possible that the individuals within it have different standards. Certainly I agree that abusing people over an opinion is at best foolish. But you can't really call it double standards just because that community doesn't hold itself to the standards yours does.

I'm more talking about the really silly ones, like the one in the OP. The sort of ones where it's like "If I do something, it's fine. If YOU do something, it's terrible!" and things like that. Ones that are clear, and just plain silly.

Even then, it depends on how blatant it is. I think no-one is immune to a bit of bias in their own favour, we naturally overlook our own shortcomings. Just take the number of times people make a mistake in a post correcting someone else's post. Saying that, there are occasions when someone is so hypocritical you just want to facepalm at the irony.

Yeah, this thread is about those occasions. I believe the Adventure Time/Regular Show VS MLP is one. I do admit I do have some biases and double standards, for example I have a few that I can't be asked to think off right now. But I know I have some, which at the time I forget I have.

You like MLP? Fine but don't bomb other threads. I like Batman:The Animated Series(childhood and all), and you know what I won't don't do? Bomb a MLP thread. As for why the Escapist doesn't like it, you guys already have a group and place to talk.

On the other hand, speaking of bombing a thread....
It's called the exception mate... can we please get off my EXAMPLE and actually discuss! For gods sake.

Ok, I guess the way the media depicts violence against men as humorous while violence against women is tragic. Bullshit, gender shouldn't matter when a innocent person is faced with violence.

Thanks for not trying to argue with me more :D

I agree, there really is a lot of double standards when it comes to violence to men/women. For example, the old classic. If a woman hits a man the man is probably a massive bastard (even if the woman is hitting him because she's a *****) whereas if a man hits a woman the man is a heartless bastard who doesn't care for women's feelings.

Oh, indeed... Which only get more glaringly awful when it goes into sexual assault territory. It -is- getting better, thankfully. On both fronts.

And for the record, I agree with the example, OP. Apparently, Adventure Time is better because it's not ponies. Which is a bit silly, even if it does seem to be a pretty nice show.

Now, my example:

Homosexuality is wrong, because it says so in the Bible. Abominable, even. Harrumpf!

It also says in the Bible that you're not allowed to wear clothes made out of two different materials. Oh, that's just a metaphore or something, don't bother...

Ummm.... I don't know how to break this to you, but there are people [http://www.massresistance.org/region/newyork/images/statehouse_2535_480.jpg] who are not hypocritical about that.

Oh, dear... Forgot about those fellers...

At least they're not hypocrites, just wish they'd live their own lives and leave us in peace.

No worries, unless you live in Israel, you don't have to worry about them. That said, trust me even if they don't agree with you, they aren't violent.

Here's a fun one from the media. You ever see Wedding Crashers? Just think of Gloria's characterization for a minute, and her interactions with Jeremy for the bulk of the film. In particular, consider that one scene in the bedroom

Where she ties Jeremy to the bedposts while he's asleep, duct-tapes his mouth shut to silence him, and forces herself on him, in what he later describes as his "midnight rape". This is a culmination to his repeatedly unsuccessful attempts at fending off her sexual advances

Now I want to you imagine that same scene with the genders reversed. Gloria's the man, Jeremy's the woman. The scene - actually most of their interactions - would never have gotten a green light under those circumstances. This, boys and girls is one of the Double Standards of Rape, specifically the double standards applied by the media to its depiction based on who is raping whom. As aptly put in the linked page's quote:

Obviously if you're watching a scene with a woman tied to a bed while a man forces sex on her, the final act of that movie will involve said man getting shot in the face by Bruce Willis. If, on the other hand, it's a man being tied down and forced into sex by a pretty lady, well, you're watching a wacky romantic comedy.

By a similar token, imagine a male student who is subject to the overt flirtations of his - admittedly attractive - teacher, to his apparent discomfort. Got your reaction in mind? Good. Flip the gender roles again. The young lady student is subject to the overt flirtations of her - admittedly handsome - teacher, to her apparent discomfort. More often than not, the latter is portrayed as sexual harrassment, the former...not as often.

Really hard to figure out why there is a double standard here. Alright so have you ever watched porn? Most of the time who do you feel more sorry for, the guys or the girls. Pretty obvious why it is looked down on because it's hard to call a girl anything other than slut when she has a dick in each hole. All I am saying is that it is not right. Really not hard to understand once the male imagination gets carried away. Does a guy say after he has had sex with a chick. Okay he will tell all of his friends this, "I banged the shit out of her last night." So what does a girl say after she let her man put it in her butt last night, probably nothing.
Im not entirly sure what your saying

porn is not the same as real life...the lady is getting paid to do whatever for the enjoyment of others..its buisness, I doubt shes enjoying herself really, but I wouldnt know, Im not familar with porn

as for real life...is it wrong for a woman to enjoy sex? because it seems slut shaming comes from the days of no sex untill marrage and purity and all that bullshit

promiscuity has its risks though...more so for women
