HomeWorld : The Kadeshi Gardens

Wtf four ion canons ?!
Oh, come on... That was specifically aimed to be no challenge at all. It looks scary, you might lose a few ships, but it's a piece of cake really. Those 4 ion cannon ships only have about 1.2 times the firepower of your Ion frigates, and die much faster.

Staying with Space RPG, i'll raise you Conquest: Frontier wars. The map where you defend the solar system. The enemy has ten times as many ships as you do, you can't leave your system to counter attack, but they can come in at any of 3 wormholes. If you don't allready knoe where the enemy is coming from every single time, you're screwed.

Yeah, I remember the Gardens of Kadesh being dead hard, but came back to it recently and found it to be rather easy...

Fighting Sinspawn Gui in FFX. It now occurs to me why the developers wanted me to grind through the zig-zaggy monster-infested long way.

Fighting Metal Kor in Jak 2. Jak 2 was a game of many frustrations, and that boss battle took me ages to beat. First time I reached him I restarted the game out of frustration.

The Red Baron mission in GTA:SA, I am aware that on a pc, flying is easy, but on a ps2, it is bloody hard to complete. Also in the original God of War, the challenges of the gods sent me through the roof, no saves and the challenges are hard! I always gave up at the end one out of frustration, so next time I'd have to do the whole thing again.

God of War, Ares on whatever the hardest difficulty is called. I got through the rest of the game in about 8 hours. It took me another 12 to take down Ares. It got to the point where I could take down his first form in about 15-30 seconds. Then I would get close but not close enough against the horde of Kratos clones.

The last boss in the most recent Ratchet and Clank game. I felt like none of the weapons were effective against him, or any enemy in the last 2 hours of the game for that matter. For any who haven't played the game, the first part of the boss fight you have backup and then once he's down to 3/4 health you fight him solo. I took to just running circles around him during the first part of the battle letting my allies take him down just so I MIGHT have enough ammo to take him down the rest of the way.

I'd break Ninja Gaiden down into more specific terms:

Alma. Fight.
Alma, is that the pinkish Demon ***** from Hell (as I've taken to referring to her)? Because I still haven't beaten her. I cannot stand having to
a)swim through some water
b)take an elevator
c)fight some demon foot soldier guys
d)fight some more with support from teleporting scythe-wielding things
e)jump down to the cathedral floor
just to get beaten senseless by that crazy ***** and do the whole thing again.

Dragonforce on Expert would be such a "level" if my friends and I were serious. Instead we play it in face-off to see who can get the most notes and be the most rockstarish.

CoD 4, second Chernobyl level. I went down to Normal to finish that bloody defence bit. Not before pacing my living room and silently screaming at the walls, though.

I don't know if anyone's said this yet, but Halo 3's level 'Cortana' on Solo Legendary. I need a new controller and a game disk because of that level. >=(

DAMN HER!DAMN HER TO THE DEEPEST, DARKEST PITS OF HELL
Whaaaat? That was the best boss in the game : ( The whole games is so bloody easy, and then you actually meet a boss where you have to think to survive, finally making good use of the battle engine. Heavenly ^^

If one wants something frustrating from FFX, try the mini-games to get the best weapons. The chocobo riding game and the lightning-dodging game aren't even remotely fun, just painful.

I personally was a bit frustrated with the Meat Circus in Psychonauts. I know it's the last level, but it's sooooo much harder than anything you previously encounter. Suddenly you have to concentrate to win? Seriously : D

Oh, and I-No from Guilty Gear XX too ^^ You think you're doing good and then she suddenly gets one hit in followed by three tension attacks, killing you instantly. Yeah, that's fun :p

"Just so you don't think I'm new to this whole "video game" thing... I missed out on the Contra craze, but I earned my chops in the old school Mega Man games"

Actually, I've never really had that big a problem with hard 2d-games unless the controls suck and you can't really do anything but learn every part of the game by heart before you can complete it.In 2d-games you can see everything that's going on and react accordingly which at least gives you the sense that your skill alone decides if you win or lose. In newer platformers like DMC things come running in from outside the screen, and you time and time again fall into holes you'd have easily cleared had you seen where you were going. When the camera, not the actual challenge is your enemy I do get rather frustrated ~~ As for the Mega Man games I loved them, even if they were hard. 'Twas especially fun if you played with a friend and you took turns trying to clear... say the block sections on Ice Man's level. Eventually I got so good at it that I could start with any boss, even in MM1. Beating Ice Man is not easy, let me tell you. Three hits and you're toast (or maybe ice cream rather ~~)

Hell, I got Tidus' phalic sword or whatever it's called, the race was far less hassle.

The Final Fantasy series is worse then an MMO. "Can't beat that boss? Then go mindlessly grind for hours".

No Final Fantasy, I wont be your ***** anymore, I'm off to play Oblivion.

Terminator 2: The Arcade Game on the Mega Drive.
the level where you have to protect the jeep as it's being pursued by all manner of Skynet creations. In a game originally intended to use the light gun i found this level impossible using the regular mega drive controller. Absolutely frustrating!
Also watching my friend play Alien 3 on the Mega Drive, the last few levels are horrendous.

When i was a kid i used to get so frustrated in the later levels of Space Harrier on the Atari ST

The level in FEAR where you have to kill the giant Killbot/robot/fat master cheif thing, but since you've already had to use up all of your rocket rounds on the other 2 kill bots, there is no way to beat it other than to circle strafe it, and fire every conceivable kind of munition you have, while dodging it's rockets and grenades, then , once killing it, trying to go to the next area, and having your last militmeter of health taken, and having to redo the whole thing.

^^ I think you're actually thinking of Elec Man- he's the one who kills in three shots even if you're at full health. Lucky the Rolling Cutter snuffs him just as fast.

In that regard, I recently got a bargain on the Megaman Compliation for Gamecube, and found pretty much the entire first game to be somewhat headache-inducing even with the save feature and the auto-fire trigger included.

Looking at something a bit more modern, the final level of Advance Wars: Days of Ruin.
Yes, I know it's a series well known for it's impossible final levels where the enemy armies get a huge number of benefits you don't, but look at it this way: In the first game, the final CO had a Meteor Strike CO ability that badly damaged everything in a large radius expanding out from a point of his choosing. He would use it every 2nd or 3rd turn when the fighting got intense. Same thing in the 2nd game, plus a 30-turn time limit and a fixed Laser that obliterates anything stupid enough to wander into it's path every 7 turns.

With DoR we get a similar situation, except the 'Meteor Strike' happens every single day, the Lasers fire every day, and the enemy army proper has a CO that makes whatever unit he's in virtually unkillable. It's only a matter of time until you're utterly overwhelmed (less than 30 turns)- the only choice is to hurry and fulfill the win condition. This is the only mission in that game I had to use a strategy guide on after nearly freaking out a few times.

I'm surprised that noone has mentioned the battletoads car level. [http://www.retrojunk.com/img/art-images/battletoads1.jpg]
ATTENTION EVERYONE ELSE!

You have already lost. Especially if you're naming something that came out in the last ten years. *Especially* if you're saying XBox Ninja Gaiden, which wasn't hard.

The entire NES Battletoads game, and especially the car level of the game, was the most unfair thing ever.
