What kind of leveling up systems have you enjoyed? and/or what kind would you create?

Unlocking skills and abilities in a linear fashion (get skills at certain lvl) for example or set skills throughout the story?, just to name a few.

Send a post of your opinions :)

I really enjoyed the leveling system in CoD4: MW, because it didn't overwhelm you with a bunch of new weapons right off the bat.

I also enjoy the new system that they have in WoW, where you get fewer talent points, but they make more of a difference.

As for single player games, I feel that ones where a certain ability is an integral part of getting past a certain challenge are the best.

I like a bit of both.

Like skills that are essential to fighting say, a boss, would pop up in the story line.

Then you get points to obtain and upgrade other optional skills that make the game more awesome.

On an off note, welcome to the Escapist. Someone will come along with the full greeting soon, so for now, I'd just like to warn you away from the basement.

i like the traditional gain exp till u reach X, then /lvl up. unlocking new abilities as lvl's X,X,XX,XXXX,XXX and X ect ect.being able to buy new abilities at such lvls as...

i honestly would like to see a mixed system:

a mixture of skill lvling. you buy skill X, as u use it, hey! it lvls on it's own! char lvl's traditionally, but also, as you lvl skills, or do certain things, lil bits of exp. monster and equips are scaled to char lvl, so as you lvl, loot becomes better, so does equips, and monsters are tougher, and possibly more of them aswell. all the while your abilties could be maxed out, but you yourself, is weak as shit :p

honestly, i think oblivion was one of the best systems ever, but there have been a few others i cant name specifically, and i did like APB's system (R.I.P. <='[ )

I enjoy the level up through use systems like those in Oblivion or Morrowind. I also liked the system used by Eve Online where there were no levels but rather a series of skills that one could choose to train in.

Yeah I'm a bit of a fan of the levelling of both character and skills. I like the fact that the most commonly used skills get better as you use them and they level up, but then having your character level as well which then also influences the strength of your skills/magic. I also like the WoW system with skills, which are unlocked at a certain time and you're not given a whole lot and expected to master so many early on. I guess it also depends on the game, but usually like these.

Well I kinda liked Castle Crashers leveling up system. It was nice, simple, and it was fun spec-ing in just one skill. But I'm going to leave it at that. Don't really feel like telling what I'd like exactly right now. Maybe I'll come back later and post about it.

I liked FFX's system where you could gain points and them spend them however you wished to develop your characters. I hated FFXII's system because it was irritating to buy crap (accessories and weapons) I was never going to use just to access the blocks next to them and from there the blocks next to them. But that may be coloured by my lack of enjoyment for the game as a whole.

Oblivion was good in that you only leveled up the skills you used.

Story-based 'leveling up' is very cool, but difficult to do well, I think.

I liked Morrowind's and Oblivion's leveling system the best. It's the reason I play those games, so when I hear people mention using leveling-system-overhaul mods, I get sad. I like Oblivion a tad more because of the enemy scaling guaranteeing that I wouldn't run into anything I couldn't handle, unless I attacked some set-level town NPCs.

I ran into a Daedroth at level 2 in Morrowind. HOLY FUCKING SHIT.

I love the Crystalarium from FF13, with it's separate class grids. And I love the Sphere Grid from FF10.

I also like the "learn abilities through items" system of Lost Odyssey and FF9.

I like skill based systems the most. Use a sword all the time, then its skill goes up as you use it! Or it can be points set aside each time you level to put into the skills, but there has to be caps and limits so you cant be a Heavy Armor, Tank, Healer, Mage of death.

I also like the D&D way where based on what class/roll you pick there are options that fit only that class. A Mage can only wear cloth use daggers or staff and have certain spells open to only them being a Mage. A Cleric has a total different set of spells and armor and weapons that can do some melee damage.

What I am starting to see and I like is what you have in Fallout New Vegas now.. you have a melee char and eventually with enough kills with melee it opens perks that fit/enhance what you do.

I liked oblivions as you got better in a sill for practicing it, but hate fable 3s ( you basically get to open chests at diferent points in the game with upgrades in, only after boss fights)

and i havent been on for long but made my account ages ago in advance, so whats this basement?

I liked the system in Dragon Quest VIII: custom abilities, fixed stat upgrades.

New Vegas has my favorite levelling system to date.

It's generous enough that you can top up your favorite skills, but you can't become a god master of all skills like you could in F3.

I thoroughly liked the level-ups in that flawed, flawed Vampire: Bloodlines game. You purchased each skill and ability independently. Then again, it was pretty much how the table top game worked; you could be a very powerful character and still not know how to take the safety off a firearm because all your points went into finances, law, melee, and crazy magical powers. Just "leveling" didn't automatically make you better at everything.

The most broken had to be anything in the Elder Scrolls series. It was actually kind of fun smashing the balance of those game over my knee.

XP for finishing quests and spending the points anywhere you like.

I'm not picky. Anything that isn't like Oblivion works for me.

I like Fallout's leveling system. It feels like you get new perks when you really need them and it makes the game fell balanced.

I like leveling up and being able to distribute what skills I want to improve, as well as the system where if you use a certain weapon or do a certain action enough times that it improves. This allows me to specialize in certain things that I know that I use often or that I could benefit from the most. Skill trees are also pretty sweet, as are perks.

But in general, I don't really like leveling up systems akin to Pokemon and the older Final Fantasy's where you just level up and they just generally improve, it doesn't allow for specialization for certain things unless you get really specific into the character's moves and stuff.

With CoD Multiplayer type of unlocks, I'm personally sick of them right now. I like leveling up and finding out what the next unlock will be, but it bothers me how I can't have a certain weapon or perk or equipment until I'm a specific level. I much prefer to distribute my points to what I want rather than hoping that the next unlock will be something I use. BlackOps apparently does that, but I've stated before that I won't buy BlackOps, so Killzone 3 for me it is.
