LittleBigPlanet Levelsmiths Create Cinematic First-Person Shooter
What's that you say, LittleBigPlanet 2 is a 2D platformer? Where on Earth did you get such a crazy notion?
A pair of
LittleBigPlanet 2 [http://www.amazon.com/LittleBigPlanet-2-Playstation-3/dp/B002I0K780/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1305893881&sr=8-1 ] players have taken the cute, bright and family-friendly side-scrolling platformer, and used it to create a rather dark and oppressive first-person shooter full of robots, rockets, and for some reason, retro cars.
The level serves as a brief trailer for a much larger project called "Massive Epic Raving Destruction," and was created by users "Steve_Big_Guns" and "Special _D." As you can see from the video, it's not really what you'd call a "typical"
LBP level. Writing on the
LittleBigPlanet Central [http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?56716-Massive-Epic-Raging-Destruction-(M.E.R.D)-3D-FPS-Trailer] forums, Steve said that the level doesn't quite the work the way he wanted, as he couldn't get the camera to rotate properly. The fix was apparently not to rotate the camera, but to rotate the whole level - which might explain why the movements seem a little stiff. Even that wasn't perfect though, as it was possible to hit a level boundary and have the whole thing break.
Since the release of the beta last year players have done all kinds of crazy and impressive things with
LBP 2 from making
Marvel vs. Capcom-style fighting games [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106297-Insane-Fans-Make-Sony-vs-Marvel-vs-Capcom-in-LBP2], to recreating the likes of Peggle [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107504-You-Got-Your-Peggle-in-My-LittleBigPlanet2] and Portal [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104597-Player-Packs-Portal-Into-LittleBigPlanet-2]. But even among these impressive projects, the "M.E.R.D." trailer stands out as something special. You can find out more about the level/trailer here [http://lbp.me/v/0e851x], and if you've got
LittleBigPlanet 2, grab it for yourself.
