I won't be upgrading my Chess board. I'm a classic player at heart.

Methinks this joke is as old as dirt, but still funny. Reminds me of a comic I have cut out and tacked to my cork board. http://www.foxtrot.com/2010/02/02072010/

Honestly people complain about the smallest changes to the game. I mean come on people, it's a slight variation, it's still the same game you know and love. I'm just glad they didn't nerf the Bishops this patch. Bishops are my main!

I'm upset they still haven't fixed the "someone filps over the table and all the pieces go missing" bug. It's the main reason I keep losing all my pieces and I can't seem to get them all back.
One of the Power Cards lets you glue down the pieces.

There's actually Chess 2 which you can find on the internet, I'm guessing it might be what inspired this because it was released for the Ouya recently.

It starts off simply enough, now they are two ways to win, even through checkmate or by getting your King to the opponents half of the board without moving into check.

..but then you have character selection. Sure you could start with the normal army, or you could choose the one where rooks can teleport to any board square they wish but can't capture a piece of be captured. Or instead of your queens you have two Kings and both have a 'whirlwind' move where they destroy every piece around them. Of the army where the pawns can move towards the enemy king whether that involves going diagonally or backwards...

Or there's the army where any queens can only move like Kings, but any two pieces adjacent to each other shares their moveset. So if a bishop and a knight were currently next to each other, the bishop could move like a knight and the knight like a bishop.

Chess 2 [http://www.arstechnica.com/gaming/2014/01/chess-2-impressions-an-enchanting-new-twist-on-an-ancient-game] for when real chess isn't enough like a fighting game
I came here to say the exact same thing, I haven't tried it out yet, but here's hoping it'll be interesting. Reviews say the AI is shit, so online play would have to be the way to go.

It sounds awesome
Next we need area attacks and randomized events

Well, to be fair it's part chess, part porn.
Hey man, I linked the censored version... :p

The card system in the new patch is awesome. I just used the "Diamonds are Forever" card, which reset the board. Except the king starts in the corner, and you are playing on a diagonal!

Nice Foxtrot reference. Love that comic.
I spent many hours of my childhood adding new rules to chess myself and this skit brought back a few memories as well as the desire to try it.
Hopefully the next chess patch adds in social networking functions and a "share online" button.

Come on, where's the rumored terrain additions that implement line of sight gameplay mechanics!?

Only part porn? They have to catch up to the people making nude chess games.

Not gonna lie: I want to play that version.
This is not the only attempt I've seen to improve chess. The Big Bang Theory's Sheldon tried to split the board 3 ways along an equilateral triangle.
Douglas Hofstadter came up with a whole slew of chess variations.

Chest and Chesh are played on a triangular and hexagonal grid respectively (rules for Chesh are here: http://www.oocities.org/athens/olympus/5867/chesh.html)

Chass is played on a single one-dimensional line of indefinite size, choss on a three-dimensional grid (and chæss is played on a 2x∞ board)

I am suddenly having flashbacks to Homestuck's Battlefield.

There's like... A Planet Sized Chessboard surrounded by a Mobius Net Chess Board.

Chess 4.5.2 - it's the Blernsball of board games. http://youtu.be/iq1d07gYl8o

Still, gave me a flashback to Yu-Gi-Oh's Dungeon Dice Monsters phase, even though dice content was lacking. Graham could use some industrial-grade hairgel and it'd be all set.

This episode brings back call center memories for me.

We had access to an excel sheet between calls so myself and buddy created a game called: "Classic Chess". We created a rule set for the game based around the concept of Chaos Magic, where every turn a d20 is rolled to impact how the game is played for that individual player. We also added a rule that if you roll the same d20 result twice in a row than that effect becomes permanent for the rest of the game.

Some of the most absurd and fun examples were:
- Pawn Bomb: Select a Pawn on the Board and roll a D6. On each turn reduce that D6 by one. When the D6 would reach zero the pawn explodes killing itself and each piece in squares adjacent to it.

- Meteor: Randomly select a square on the chess board (easily done in excel). That square is struck by a meteor and any piece in that square is killed. The square can no longer be used. Only Knights may jump over that square.

- Diplomatic Immunity: Your king cannot be put into check or captured for 3 turns.

Needless to say, "Classic Chess" was hilarious and fun to play.
We even got a turn 2 checkmate via unlucky meteor roll!
Good times :)

I think the most important question is whether the patch comes with a wipe or not.

This new chess actually sounds like a lot of fun.

Reminds me of a game on the school computers about two decades ago. It used chess pieces that gained xp, but instead on normal boards every level had it's own map and you started with limited pieces. Fun as all hell, just wish I could remember the name... something with realms in the title.

This made me wonder - is there such a thing as an updated version of chess?
yep many; ouya just had a game called chess 2 released. It's based on some rules that have been floating around for years, kinda fun.

What, no cover system? Bullshit. I've been waiting for this update for years and you don't even bother implementing chess (pun intended) high walls? I'm never buying another game from your company again!
