Sometimes a thread will be left unlocked for what seems to be an inexplicably long time. It is my theory that the mods use them as asshat-traps. They'll let it get good and flamey, and then when all the trolls are warming their hands over a fire fueled with 100% post-consumer, recycled Stupid, there will be a banhammer raid and whoever doesn't get smacked gets put on probation. Then they lock it.
Brilliant, that explains everything...

Or the Mods have lives outside locking threads.

Crazy, I know. ;)

It's cooler to believe they have a nefarious plan for everything, though.

I got my "incoming lock" detection before I joined the forum, it really is just common sense when something is about to be locked.

It sometimes fails though, I should have known that Chess thread would never work but I wanted it so much... CHESS!

Anyway, rule of thumb is that any "compare or contrast" thread gets his by the lock hammer pretty quickly. These are mostly "OMFGZ wat is betar da 360 or da ps3zzzzz" and usually include a poll with eight options.

Kl thanks, so really its just a guess though
An educated guess. Stick around long enough and you'll likely get a feel for the sorts of topics that are bound for a run in with Locky von Lockington. Here's a tip for you: if you're thinking about posting a new thread, do a search for the topic first, to make sure it hasn't already been covered.
My fiancee's dog is now no longer to be called simply "Lockie" (short for Lochland.) It's Locky Von Lockington now.

Well I was looking at the forums and was wondering, how do people know when a thread is going to be locked?
If you seriously need to ask that question, your internet should be confiscated and your fingers burned so you can't type anymore.

To answer your question: COMMON SENSE.

A thread getting off topic and getting into silliness. Say extended discussions about cookies when the topic is forum rules. Getting back on topic is always nice.

Thread locks are sensed by common sense more than anything as has already been stated. And posters like us don't always get it right, I've called a lock or two that has never happened.

Most forum rules are just about being respectful, intelligent, and on point. If a thread asks a silly or mundane question, is misleading (usually bots) or is likely to cause a lot of unpleasantness, it gets locked.

A lot of people start threads because it proves their worth and gets them badges and I don't even know sometimes. A lot of people think it's some sort of competition on a forum, the more threads you start the more l33t you are...

Just don't think like that, always post in an existing thread before starting a new one, and play nice (don't start by saying "What is the deal with **** it is such a stupid game and only retards play it) And you're gold.

Well, some of those can survive for quite a while. Just look at the duck [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.70096?page=1] thread!
