I just finished watching the video and i have to say one of the best they have done for a while!

I was rather impressed at 2:30 and the finale at 9:30 where they unleash God's wrath upon the River Thames.

I wish i was there =[ How were your firework displays/capital celebrations? I would love to see them!

"That video had pretty colours!"

Cookie for reference.

Also, in our capital, Copenhagen, they haven't got anything nearly as festive as that, though I'll try and find something.

There:

Nothing special, just random fireworks.

I saw it on TV and it was really good. The ending was so blinding, I didn't know that fireworks could recreate the power of the sun.

I heard it cost 1.2 Million....
Doesn't surprise me.

If I had a job, I seriously would be pissed off around about now.

But think of the stimulus! Besides, better to blow the money up than give it to poor people. Actually, I heard (on the internet) that a lot of the expenses had to with security...

Anyway, this is sorta off topic. Why do British people refer to rivers as "The River X"? When did that convention start and why don't Americans follow it?

Jeez give it a break. It's once a year. Ya gotta splash out once a year, right? Then after the new year, we can go back to being the tight bastards we british are.

Why? We would have NEVER seen the money.

We wouldn't have felt the benefit of that money, it would have gone on another stupid scheme, or into the pockets of rich people. A lot of money already does, millions more than this cost. At least this, the main celebration of the year, could be witnessed by anyone and everyone, rich, poor, man, woman, black, white etc etc etc. I'd much rather they sank money into this, than something I can't see, nor benefit from.

Being very working class and poor, I'd rather they had a party with some of the money, than let z-list politicians lord it up by hosting posh receptions with tax dodging ex-pat lords and suchlike.

Better than give it to poor people? If you truly mean that, and you are one of those super right wing Americans, I have to be honest, you need to sort yourself out. One day you will hit the bottom, and look up, and the only people looking down will be people with that sort of attitude, spitting on you. It's not a great place to be. I'll assume I misread you, or you were being sarcastic.

As for the river thing, we don't always say that. There's a lot of rivers over a small island though, and various places can have the same name as the river, so it's quicker and easier to differentiate between them, by referring to the place as a river.

I wasn't paying that much attention to the display on BBC One to be honest, I was busy screaming the chorus of Starlight at the top of my lungs. First song of 2011, hell yes :D

It was sarcasm. I'm an "extreme far lefty", which puts me at about "centre[footnote]Typing center that way feels so strange.[/footnote] left" for Britland. In the U.S. we refer to rivers as such with a simple "the". You cross the Delaware (River), but you cross Delaware (the State). So I guess we're not so different after all.
