2 months for a break every year, during the summer and I'm fine. (My school gets like 3 1/2 months off.

I don't like school when I'm there, I miss it when it's the holidays.

Going to school gives me something to do during the day, for me six weeks can feel too long at times and too short at others.

School for me starts at 7:17 am and ends around 2:15 pm. On that we only get 10 weeks of summer but we don't get many days off during the school year only for big holidays. Even now the school board in my county is talking about getting rid of weekends. Glad I'm a senior this year with half days.
No weekends? Can't wait to hear the Christians whine about Sunday being the day of rest.

at my old school (in america) we had 12 week vacations... which was pretty cool but in my current school (in Scotland) we have 6-8 weeks in summer but alot of breaks during the school year.. i think i prefer it that way so i'm not retarded when we get back... and i get breaks during the year

I seriously doubt longer hours will help. I used to know a guy from Japan and a few from China, which I'm told have very good systems and 6 days school weeks. They all said the same thing: 7-8 hours in a day is insane, and by the end they were burned out.

I can see extending the year with lessening time-per-day on the grounds of keeping students and teachers fresh; but extending the year, extending the days and (because this always happens) still piling on homework, and you'll be sitting on a powderkeg.

Wow..... if they DO increase the length of a school year, I'll be even happier that I have my GED....

Exactly.

Since I have to elaborate so this isn't a single word post, America's school system is severely lacking in most parts of the country. First and foremost I want to see teachers who can answer questions without using their little teachers edition book. If you're teaching a subject you should know the subject, not just where to find it in a book.

Betters schools would resolve this issue. If school systems weren't so afraid of their damn students--this wouldn't be an issue. But it's all about "political correctness" and "self-esteem" and crap like that.

If a teacher could cuff a kid for mouthing off in class, you'd have less of it. That's not child abuse, that's disciple. It's reminding a child that s/he is not the one in charge.

And kids are cruel. Yeah, certain people are picked to be made fun of. It's tough but suck it up.

okay, okay, that was a soap box moment.

Anyway, year-around schooling and uniforms--bring 'em on. I think it would be beneficial.

Pretty much this. More time won't fix the things wrong with schools, not in the slightest. Hell, I'd say they have plenty of time as it is, it's just used badly (science is a joke, and health must die).

This...more school doesn't substitute for poor education

No. In my school we finish the curriculum a few weeks before the end of school so why not just add more to the curriculum. I mean in one class period it takes about 30 minutes to teach the days lesson so we have about 15 minutes to spare. We have more time for periods why do we need more time for the whole YEAR?

Agree completely. Also, it's not school I have a problem with, it's homework, I know its a good way to get you to remember information, but the stress and time-consumption it creates does more harm than good in my opinion. Then again maybe it's because I go to school, when I finish it I might look at it differently.
I hear most jobs are just 9-5(or whatever) and work just stays there. Once you go home your free until tomorro. I'm still in school so please correct me if I'm wrong.

This is a dumb idea. I was stuck in some regular schools for most of my life and I couldn't stay focused on the work. I hated doing it and I was on a borderline path to failure. I finally found out about a school in my area that took in kids who had flunked out of school or were permanently suspended and it's the best thing that ever happened to me.

At this school the days were shorter, and the school curriculum started later then the other public schools. I learned more in those last two years then in my entire time at school. The teachers were all top notch and the classes were all kept rather small. The teachers will not tolerate insolence in that school either. At the beginning of the year there is around 120 or so students in grades 11 and 12. By the end of the year there are somewhere around 60-70 remaining. Those who are gone either didn't care or caused trouble.

The best teacher I've ever had teaches there and I still go visit them from time to time. Nothing can replace a good school system, and no amount of extra time sitting behind a desk is going to fix America's flawed educational system.

Its stories like those that give me faith in the non-public education system.

On topic, it comes down to quality over quanity. cleverlymadeup shoulda put a "/thread" in his post.

The No Child Left Behind thing had good intentions but, as evidenced in one of asinann's posts, it poses more problems then it solves.

some teachers actually know their subject. my american history teacher in 8th grade knew his shit. never used his book or anything. he knew all the political issues, and told us both sides of all of them. we need more teachers like him. no one failed his class unless they just didnt give a shit. he loved what he did, and it showed. all the kids wanted to hang out with Mr. P.

Then, there are teachers like my 8th grade speech/7th grade health teacher who go off on stories and waste the whole period. he gave quizzes that were 100 points and ONE question. All or nothing. Needless to say, i failed one and it sunk my whole grade for the year. He fortunately was forced to stop teaching this year. but its teachers like that that need to be headed off early. he taught there for 20 fucking years. i dont know if gettin old and divorced did anything to his teaching, but if he taught like that his whole career my school district needs pissed upon. by me and my friends, specifically.

Definitely agree with this. The quality in most schools in the states is pitiful. Extending the year will only push those kids who were on the edge of dropping out to just completely give up.

Quality before Quantity. VALVE before Activision, etc, etc

Basically this. If anyone thinks people will learn more just because they've been keep in longer they seriously underestimate teenagers ability to ignore their teachers.
Or their ability to just skip school, which is a much easier and preferable alternative to the average deliquant.
