I find this ironic, considering how much gamers look down on each other as well (if you play WoW, you have no life, if you play CoD, you're a mindless sheep, if you play shooters, you have no taste, etc), but nonetheless, don't let them get to you.

Well I find this all fascinating because this stereotype just didn't exist when I was at school, gaming was cool. I guess my generation must be to blame because we were riding the first wave of popularised games, with PCs reaching a certain price point and a certain power, plus the release of the PSone and later the xbox... the stereotype didn't exist because we hand't made it yet I guess.

haters gonna hate

I've learned not to bring up video games when I'm talking to other girls, unless I know they're gamers too. Too often has a conversation been about how Girl A and B are so bad at Call of Duty/Guitar Hero/Left 4 Dead/whatever and how they don't understand why their boyfriend(s) love it so much, while I just fidget and sit there awkwardly.

Im in yr12 in school this year and there are these 3 girls there really rude mean dumb and slutty. Anyway they asked me what i do on the weekends and i said 'I play video games and write about different topics on The Escapist'

They looked at me like i was a idiot and they said 'Why?' and i said because 'i enjoy doing it'

and then they say something offensive 'If you play games and are on a nerd site then why arnt you Fat and Lazy?'

then i said 'Why would you think that Gamers and People on the escapist are fat and ugly'?

they said 'Because you play Games'

CONFUSION

Anyway do you think that this is how people look at us?

because i get this reaction alot
You answered your own question.

The fact is: people don't usually question themselves. They trust what they know. When you do, it's called angst because it can very easily make you confused and depressed. What people hear is what they know, so if people hear that gamers are fat, lazy and immature then that is what they believe. That is what people are told because the older generation of gamers doesn't hold much power yet. It will. Within a couple of decades, I can see this prejudice gone, but right now, that's what people think.

[rant] The mainstream media is what people see and what they know. They will go out of their way to learn about what's important and what affects them directly. Games do not affect most people directly, so they mainstream media is where (and as far as) they go. It hasn't painted a good image. The most that games ever become mentioned outside problems caused by them is on the big release days. The next CoD will be mentioned offhand, as will the next WoW release, Crysis 2, Skyrim, the probable Halo revival, and probably Duke Nukem Forever. This paints gamers as people without lives (as we aren't mentioned at any other time), or immature and possibly violent (what with game ads and the demonizing stories). There will be a change, it is visible in the distance, but we must wait for it and deal with the prejudice for the next little while. [/rant]

And yes, I tend not to mention games because everyone outside the community reacts that way.

People are stupid, that about sums it up.
This.

Stupid people shouldn't be allowed to have off-spring.
To be fair education plays as much of a part as genetics, as does random chance.
I've seen complete idiots birth intelegent kids and I've seen intelegent folks birth complete fucking morons.
