Looking for games with a Souls-esque feeling of being on a lonely journey through a ruined world

Is it really everyone else?s fault that your reputation precedes you though? There is a not-so-fine line between being a fan and fanboy, or defending vs boasting. We all have our favorites, but wearing them on one?s sleeve has a tendency to draw the worst kinds of attention, sadly.
name me all of these non Nintendo threads i go into and change the topic to Nintendo then.

already on the first page of this general discussion section. out of the 22 thread topics on the 1st page at the moment, i've only commented in about 4 of them. and in 2 of them i haven't even mentioned Nintendo, being the PS3 Arrogant thread and the Xbox Live PS+ free July games threads.

this forum is just filled with Sony and PC Fanboys. talk about Playstation and PC games and even celebrate Playstation stuff like that happy anniversary thread celebration. but don't you dare EVER talk positively about Nintendo or Xbox otherwise this place is just going to go apeshit at you.

that is how this place always acts

Apart from its gameplay and its brooding darkness, I've always loved the Souls games for their aspect of partaking in a lonely journey through a decrepit, mostly destroyed world, whose glory is long past, challenging its dangers, surviving on whatever you find laying around, and finding comfort in the light of a bonfire and in meeting lost souls, who are on a journey of their own, in search of their own goals.
Others have mentioned Salt and Sanctuary as well but I also wanted to chime in and recommend it.

It ticks off most of the boxes you mentioned:
-Forlorn world filled with monsters? Check.
-A rather vague story that you kinda need to piece together? Check.
-NPCs with their own goals and agendas? Yup.
-Large, disturbing and difficult boss fights? Well....... the bosses are big but aside from the very first boss, none of them feel like puzzles you need to solve. I finished all the bosses after the first by simply levelling up my strength, getting the biggest two-hander I could find and whacking away. In any case, the Queen of Smiles was rather horrifying.

And I have mentioned I've already played it. Thanks, though.

Oh, I know you did. I just feel the need to fanboy out when it comes to certain indy projects.

How about Tormentum?

https://store.steampowered.com/app/335000/Tormentum__Dark_Sorrow/

It's a point and click adventure game and every single screen of the game looks like Iron Maiden album art (seriously, look at it, it's fucking awesome looking). It also hits most of your check boxes.

It's a fairly short game though, and the art direction is very much the focal point of it. The ending is pretty rushed feeling, I think they ran out of money.

Anyway, it's quite good for what it is and the journey through the game is really interesting even if the ending doesn't quite hold up.

I suggest Neurovoider. Twin stick, roguelite with shallow RPG elements. Retro graphics so you shouldn't have much trouble running it.

I can't get past 75% in arcade mode. There's three classes to choose from and a multitude of very different weapons. And if you have the parts, you can change classes between levels. And it all takes place in a post-humanity, apocalyptic wasteland.

I love it:

Played that one as well. I agree with you - gorgeous artstyle, but pretty much the only good quality about the whole games at the same time. The story feels rushed and not well thought out at all.

I'm not really all that into roguelikes/lites, but I'll consider giving it a try. Thanks.

While some of that may be true, so is the opposite. It depends which side of the coin you?re on, and what generation you?re in. 7th gen I remember nearly anyone who mentioned they had a PS3 was treated like there was something wrong with them. I even had a GameStop employee act very sheepishly about ringing me up for one, like I didn?t know what I was doing. He went so far as to tell me I could always trade it in for a 360 if I didn?t like it.

People will always act that way, and it has less to do with choosing to favor any platform itself than it does the herd mentality in general.

Ehmmmm..Dark Souls 3 is the quintessential game you're looking for. I'd say buy and/or save up to either upgrade your PC or get a PS4(probably a better choice as then you also have Bloodborne to satiate your need). Otherwise you're really just stuck sraping the bottom of the barrel for old games that don't even come close to these two masterpieces. PS4 slims aren't even expensive.

If that really isn't an option I'd say Super Metroid. It nails the atmosphere and super nintendo games in general aged really well.

Any of them will do, but Call of Chernobyl is not only free to play, but with the desolation mod it enhances the feel you're going for.

Hmm, what about They Breathe? It's a short game that fits the mood you're looking for really well actually. It's probably best played without spoilers. And it looks like it's currently 60 cents, Canadian, on Steam.
Looks pretty intriguing. Might be worth a shot, especially since it's so cheap. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
Cool. Let me know what you think of it when you've played it.

the majority of humans are just selfish assholes i find. i work in an inbound call centre and i'm a Debt Collection & Early Interventions Officer.

Society tends to think us Debt collectors are really "mean" when we're not. we're just fair and won't accept BS from people.

you would be surprised at some of the stupid absolute bullshit requests i've had from some people at work.

More power to you, and not surprising that those people aren?t exactly shining examples of decency. I work for a company where the customers who don?t pay their bills are often the most demanding. The movie Idiocracy is overdue for a more realistic sequel. Maybe if some more light is shed on the various flaws in humanity we can actually take a shot at addressing them.

But that?s for another thread.

Have you heard of Necropolis? I really dig it. It's a Roguelike/Soulslike that looks to have what you're searching for.

I wanted to post some trailers but they do a horrible job at capturing the feel of the actual game so I'm leaving this no commentary gameplay clip here. Hope you dig:

Currently going through Call of Chernobyl at the moment and I agree OP, this not only has the goods but it's one of my favorite Stalker experiences.

It has a brighter color palette but I would say Abzu fits your criteria pretty well. A lone diver swimming through the majestic (and often creepy) ruins of a long dead society is Souls-esque in my opinion. It's short but sweet.
