Weird thought: Extermination.

Decently horrifying, though shitty dialogue. The design of the game's mechanics and atmosphere had alot of good work put into it. I can tell you more, though I may have to spoil. Still, that's my recommendation. You can probably pick it up cheap somewhere.

I really enjoyed Dead Space, both the first and second. Though, like will1182 said, it relies on things that jump out at you and everything is scripted, so there's really no new scares in following playthroughs. But they had good story (second better than the first, in my opinion, but I would suggest playing them both), and I was genuinely surprised at some of the twists. But more than the others, it is a FPS-fan's horror game, really. Which may be good, since you haven't played many horror games. Even though they are generally pretty accessible, gameplay-wise.

Also, Alan Wake. Haven't got to play it myself yet, but I watched a friend play the first fifteen minutes of it, and I was REALLY impressed. Can't wait to get my own paws on it >:3

The game you are looking for is called Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is also worth a look.

Call of Cithulu : Dark Corners of the Earth, Condemned: Criminal Origins and Bloodshot, System Shock 2, Cliver Barker's Undying, The Thing, Nosferatu.
All good choices. Undying is a little tough to find these days, but it's worth the effort. Nosferatu isn't what I'd call a great game, but it has great atmosphere and is genuinely creepy. Same with The Thing.

I'd recommend the XDAS series by that Benjamin Croshaw person (you may have heard of him).

They have the advantage of being free, and are generally regarded as being fucking scary.

Some really good horror games have been mentioned in this thread already, but I'd have to say Silent Hill 2 leads the pack.

Definitely Amnesia. Indigo Prophecy and Eternal Darkness are pretty good too.
Listen to this man, Eternal Darkness is proabably my favourite horror game, it definitely does not get enough credit. Also, I hear Siren is pretty damn good, though I haven't gotten around to trying it myself.

EDIT: Actually, I don't think I would classify Indigo Prophecy as a horror game. It starts looking like it will be a horror, but heads in another direction.

Amnesia's fantastic. So's Penumbra: Overture, and Penumbra: Black Plague even more so.

Honourable mention to the Thief series. They're not horror games, but will probably be somewhat scary at many points.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (This is on the PS2, however the game was designed to be experienced on the Wii using motion controls)

If it has a * by it, then it has some really frightening moments while not being an actual horror game in of itself. The vast majority of current gen games can hardly be considered survival horror in the classic sense. The formula has swung too much towards action. I hardly consider stuff like Deadspace, Bioshock, L4D, or FEAR to be actual horror games, but some people find it frightening. I don't personally even consider RE5 to be a horror game.

I never owned a gamecube, so my list is missing any entries from that platform. I know I'm missing some (I can't for the life of me recall the name of one game on the current gen where you play an FBI agent,) but I'm tired right now and can't think of them. I might come back to revise this list. Good luck, OP.

Deadly Premonition (Xbox360; PS3 only available in Japan, with an optional English voiceover)

Not without a reason, this game polarizes heavily. And actually, after 2 or 3 hours into the game, I wasn't too fond of it either. The controls are bad, and by that I mean really, REALLY bad. The graphics are more than outdated and all in all there's a lot that you need to get used to.
But once you let yourself engage in the scenery, you probably never want to leave.

It is an open-world, mystery solving survival horror game with third person shooter elements. It references all kinds of popculture classics like Twin Peaks, Ju-On, Jacob's Ladder and what not, and is accompanied by a wonderfully catchy, and seemingly random, choice of music.
On top of it all, with its charmingly offbeat sense of humor, it manages to generate a truly unique style and atmosphere. Not a single other game surprised me as often as Deadly Premonition did.
If you want a weird and lovely fucked up experience, and can actually live with bad controls and graphics, I would definitely recommend it.

If you want more detailed information, and that in good English for a change, there's a pretty great review on Destructoid: http://www.destructoid.com/review-deadly-premonition-165168.phtml
