In shooters, Do you tend to pick weapons that you like the look/sound of even if they are crap? Over possibly more ugly powerfuller ones? For example : In S.T.A.L.K.E.R SOC I Always, Always have the L85. It looks, and sounds awesome. But, it jams all the time - And it's pretty weak...

So, anyone else do this? Or is it just me being a noob? XD

No, I always go with the most effective choice. Atleast if I know that one weapon is more powerful than another, because sometimes it is hard to tell. The number cruncher in my head always gets the best of me.

I pick my weapons depending on their usefulness and the play style I want to use.

Hmm, Interesting. I Don't only pick the pretty ones, i also take into account the Stats. I.e. The l85 is Quite accurate, its reliability is what lets it down

Looks take priority over stats, unless the stats are so bad that I'm putting myself at a huge disadvantage.

So say I have the choice between two sets of armour.

One gives +100 defence, the other, +60.

If the +60 looks much better than the +100, I'll take it.

If the good looking armour has +10, then it's simply too underpowered.

Usually in competitive multiplayer, I'll go with what works. I ain't that good, so picking a weapon I like the look of is a little pointless since I'm looking at a killcam half the time.
I pick guns I like the look of in most other games though. I'm pretty much always using Hyperion weapons in Borderlands because they look cool.
Well, the SMG and pistol I have do, at least.

Of course, I Meant picking looks over Preformance within reason, like the above.

Sure !
Since ancient times of "Eye of Beholder" i have my all time favourite tools of destruction here and there. Too bad some of them were so ridiciously weak i was "forced" to cheat through entire game. But whattahell. It's all about fun. :)

Indeed. But this is strictly in a single player.

In multiplayer, I'll play with what works best for me, good appearance or no.

Biggest factor for me is how the weapon sounds, actually.

I'm usually looking at what I'm shooting at, and if the weapon is too big on the screen the game probably pisses me off anyway.
So looks aren't a big deal.

But if it sounds like a bunch of monkeys slapping cardboard boxes, I don't care if it's badass I refuse to use it.

I usually go with how a weapon feels like. a personal favorite is the revolver from HL2. It`s powerful, elegant, takes a damn long time to reload, but by that point, everything that isn`t a drop ship, stalker, or antlion guard is dead.

In example of new vegas..
Would I ever touch a different rifle after hearing the blissfully satisfying sound of my Anti-Matter rifle that makes the bass of my surround speakers vibrate? No.
Does it feel even better knowing its the most badass sniper rifle int he entire game? Eff yeah.
Do I give a damn the Red Glare rips everything into bloody bits? Nope.

Usefulness if I'm seriously playing. Feel/looks if I'm using cheats/mods/etc and have already beaten the game on a serious playthrough. Or, in the case of HL2's Pulse Rifle, I'll take both when available. Or Painkiller's shotgun might be the best example. It feels awesome, it looks awesome, and it is awesome. Weapon of choice for most close-to-medium range encounters.

Looks don't matter in games to me. Weapon efficiency does. Now in real life I do tend to choose certain aesthetics when it comes to weapon choice, but that also is in the realm of efficiency. A weapon that doesn't fit you isn't very efficient. I don't mean nickel-plating either, I mean grip, sights, etc.
If you aren't comfortable, its not a good weapon. Of course, IRL I wouldn't be comfortable using a weapon except in dire circumstances anyway... or target practice.

I pick whichever are the most fun to use. I try to go as long into a game as possible using only pistols, because a pistol just feels more slick and classy than a huge-ass machine gun or rocket launcher. That is, if the game has region-specific hit detection (lethal headshots). That way, I make up for the weapons' weaknesses with skill.

If it's the kind of game where enemies just soak up the damage, I'll use more powerful weapons.
