Never since Mass Effect 2 have I been so drawn to a game like Minecraft. Almost 5 minutes after watching some guy demonstrating some of the basics on youtube I had to play it. Not the free Minecraft either. I had to get access to the Alpha version, which cost $15 well spent. On the surface it look like a simple, blocky little attempt of a game more appropriate to our parents generation of games. But dig a little deeper and you see its a complex exploring/treasure hunting adventure, where almost anything is possible. Want to build an underwater dome, it has been done. Want to make a mine that would make Moria look like a hole in the ground in comparison, It can be done.

So, what are your thoughts? I like it so far, no complants. But I wouldn't mind to see how the bigger general gaming public thinks of it.

if I could I would totally get this game I spent hours in free mode. Being able to make something would make it so much better

Have you built a castle yet OP?

The Escapist had an article just the other day about how many copies it's sold, the implication being that the general gaming public loves it. I love it too. But I'm relatively certain that the guy who made it has a passionate hatred of my GPA.

I'm excited for when the beta comes out too. I'm hoping there'll be even more awesome stuff.

I also love the game. I can;t wait to see what it looks like when it's actually finished. The only thing I hate is that to craft a compass, you need a material that you can only get by tunneling halfway to the Earth's core... I always get lost and when I die with all my items in a completely unknown location because I got lost, I usually just make a new game.

Don't quite get all the popularity it's getting.
I played the free version, killed some time, kind of fun. But it's not the best 'Do whatever you want game' I've seen.

Garry's Mod, you can do whatever you want. You can make shit. Moving, drivable, shootable, flyable, awesome shit. It's $10

Minecraft, you make things out of blocks (Please don't bother to point out that I "oversimplified" the game. I oversimplified Gmod too). It's $15

I just don't get it.

I'm a bit sick of hearing people talk about Minecraft. Yay, it's a sandbox building game. There are like, 20 others that are better/cheaper but that's just an opinion.

Fun fact:
A minecraft world is 8 times bigger than the real word, by scale.
On hugest map size, and to scale the player would have to be 50 feet tall, but still, it's impressive.

OT: I just got it yesterday, and I'm loving every second of it. I mentioned that it's the scariest game I've ever played, and the atmosphere is just incredible. Another thing that I love is how randomly generated worlds can create some pretty awesome things. One map I just generated had a massive stone mountain/spire range that looked like it was artificially built with bridges in between the spires, with lava falls flowing out. Anyone who's played knows how rare it is to find lava above the surface, and I was blown away.

I first saw it when the Team Fortress 2 blog (for whatever reason) had an entry about it. I just saw the thumbnail of that rollercoaster video and wondered who would ever want to spend time (and money) on some blocky pixellated game about mining, minecarts or not. I shook my head and never gave it another thought.

Then last week a youtuber I'm subscribed to made like a 1-minute video about it, which made me go "heh". So I looked at the minecraft website. Which has a free classic in-browser version. Which I played. For a bit. And by a bit I mean 3 hours. And then I bought the Alpha. And now I have a castle, just started on the side-towers. With a lava mountain behind me. And an aqueduct to the sea (spawned in the middle of a frikkin continent). And started three mines. And a tree farm. And a wheat farm. I'd have more, but I get so easily distracted by little projects that I forget to mine for good stuff.

How does the damn thing do that to me? I don't understand...

what's the difference between the free and paid versions?
Free version aka Creative Mode you have an unlimited amount of a dozen different types of block and the world in front of you. You can build anything but that's it.

In Alpha aka Survival Mode you start with nothing and you only get blocks by mining them, which you can craft tools for. Oh and there's monsters. I suggest looking at one of the gazillion YouTube videos on How To Survive Your First Night. I only explained the most basic difference.

I would like to see more blocks, tools, well...everything. And either an objective, or a less randomized world with treasure or something.

It's kinda pointless when you realize that you can just dig a 3-block deep hole, plug the top and be basically undetectable. No fancy traps or buildings needed.

That's because you played the free version.

Creative is just building stuff.
But survival is survival! You have health, there are enemies, you have to craft your weapons and tools, you have to dig for you minerals, you have to survive! The survival mode blows creative mode out of the water. Creative gets boring after a bit, survival hasn't even come close to getting boring. It's awesome.

I don't have the infinite block mode though.
Where did you get that version?

Minecraft is awesome, bought it a couple of months ago. In related news: I just found my first mob spawner today. There were zombies everywhere. EVERYWHERE ZOMBIES!

I'd say that was pretty creative given that everybody else seems to feel the need to build ludicrously ornate castles and mansions that nobody but them will likely even see, let alone inhabit.

In Minecraft, the possibilities are literally endless, such a good and addicting game.
