So now to write my own non-quote post. Simply put, love is a relationship. It is not lust, and can completely exist without sex. As far as a biochemical reaction, "similar to eating massive amounts of chocolate," eating chocolate is a warm pleasure. Love is what you make it. Love can hurt. Love can drive someone mad. In no way is it like cchocolate. Also, I've seen Devil's Advocate. The character that speaks the line is the Devil. And the Devil says the line to trick Keanu into doing his sister. Therefore why do we use this line out of context?
Also, it's funny. Normally this site and the world in general shun emos. This thread seems to embrace their bleak hopelessness. Be consistent, Escapist!

An increase in levels of oxytocin and vasopressin caused by physical and psychological attraction and association with its source.

(I'm a very lonely man.)

A devotion between two people that forms a bond. A connection that not only binds you to your lover, but binds you to your greatest and truest friend. When I meet the one I love I will know, I think I may now. She must give a presence warmth everytime i see her, she is always happy and never let's the ones she loves see her frown, she cares for me as I do her, no man can hate her nor ever do so in my presence, and she must be in this world for me. When I see her i will know, because when I do, I will devote myself unto her as I do God. I will live for her, die for her, pay for her sins with my life, protect her, love her, and be willing to ensure she will always be happy even it the cost is my own suffering. For my joy will not be in having a beautiful bride with but, but in having a friend whose smile, love, and grace is my reward for my payments and suffrages.

That is love, blind devotion that defies logic and faith. A devotion that causes you to follow the one you love and to please her at all costs, no matter if she is courting or no. Which is why me and Sydney Carton are so much alike: we are broken, unwanted, and frowned upon but we would both willingly give our lives to our respective Lucie Manettes to ensure that their joy will last for the rest of their lives even if it is with another and even if we may never be there to experience it.

The ultimate question of love is this: Is she my friend? My sole devoted friend that inwould die for as she would for me? Is she the one I grow old with? To raise a family?

This is love.

You forgot serotonin. Infact it's heaps of different chemicals, but Serotonin, Oxytocin and Vasopressin are among the most important ones for the emotion that is 'love'.

It's nice to see your life boils down to chemicals. Btw, in practice, that would make you... gasp... grossly overweight and lonely!

Generally: It's really funny to see about 30% of the responses to this (though I expected more). Lol @ people trying to be supr hardxcore edgy by calling love "overrated/nonexistent/blackmail/suicide/whatever".

Pardon my language, but people who genuinely take that stance fall into three categories:

1) People who were recently hurt and disillusioned. They need the time to recover, but they will eventually come out of it.

2) Over/underweight, socially inept nerds.

3) Mind too occupied with other passions/interests to think of love (a la John Dalton).

I'd be willing to bet almost no one here is in the third category.
Or perhaps people with an affinity for science?

I, myself, would like to fall in love. Do I think of it as anything more than a chemical process which exists to get us to reproduce? Not at all. It isn't some magic that lasts forever and people aren't 'meant to be'. It doesn't mean I don't want to fall in love. The same logic would apply to me saying "I don't want to be happy because all it is is our brains pumping out dopamine."

You're appearing pretty 'holier-than-thou' with that quote.

Not helping since that's not true.
Everything is a part of love.
And I've been rejected so many times that I can deal with it.
- But that's me.
You seem a little confused about it. Consider this:

There is no such thing as "cold". You can't have an "amount of cold", it's not something that can be measured. We only measure heat. Once you hit 0 kelvin, that's it. "Cold" is simply a lack of heat. Without heat, you would only have "cold".

There is no such thing as "darkness". You can't measure, see, or feel darkness. "Darkness" is really just a lack of light. Without light, you would only have "darkness".

Pain, rejection, betrayal. These things are not love. In the same vein, these are what I would call a lack of love. In a world where love does not exist, these would be the only things left.

You can't get rid of pain by getting rid of love any more than you can get rid of darkness by dismissing light, or getting rid of the cold by sapping away all heat.
Perfect. This completely summed up what I was thinking, but couldn't really put in words.

Well, oxytocin and vasopressin are more associated with attachment and the more theoretical love side of it, and serotonin is more the real primitive pleasure. Although I guess they both are parts of love. Depends on how far you spread the definition.

Ah, now I see what you were getting at. Of course let us not forget a hearty helping of the infamous estrogen and testosterone.

This song, and the story behind it, is one of the best examples of love around. IMHO.

Love is Love. A force that transcends all. :p

Read a Manga or watch an Anime adaptation of pretty much anything from CLAMP and you have my answer. :p

Also, the obligatory. XD

Probably outside the general demographics here.

You don't know what love is until you have children. Watching your little one sleep, for the first time, that's when it hits, like a hammer.

Really? "Lust" is the feeling you feel for your mother, father, and siblings?

I'd go look at the Greek definitions of love posted in this thread; they offer a pretty good example of the different types of love people feel.

This is the kind of thing that people who HAVEN'T been in love say, because if they truly knew what love felt like, they would realise that saying "love is akin to eating a lot of chocolate" reaches into the upper most echelons of complete and utter bullshit.

I've eaten huge quantities of chocolate in single sittings - it cannot even BEGIN to compare to the feeling I get when I'm with my girlfriend.

I couldn't agree with that more. Thats the perfect trinity of the feelings that go into it.

Yhea, jaded tools have to come in here and be all jaded. :p

Ignore them, if we live happy we win.
