Ugh... count me in for being deeply oppossed to the idea of a grimdark ending. Some days, good should win, the redeemable should be redeemed, and pure evil should be chucked down a deep pit. Yub Yub, you grimdark lovers. Yub Freaking Yub.
Dang straight! [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=np6vAuS0KNs]

That song gets me every time. :-3 If there's one thing I wish Lucas had done differently for the special editions, it's that he would have found some way to incorporate the classic Ewok celebration into the new galactic party montage.

Yub Nub, people!

Yub.

Yeah, the somber ending would be crap IMO. I like the way Star Wars turned out, despite all the negativity this story brings up, and that's really all that matters to me.
If you ask me the somber ending sounds badass. I don't mind the absurdly happy ending, but something tells me that the somber ending wouldn't have the ewoks. Imagine. Just Imagine. A universe without ewoks...
The absolute worst part was that they could have still had a happy ending without those damned fugly muppets. They could just as easily have had it been a tribe of Wookies. Although I heard it was originally intended to kill Lando as a part of him redeeming himself or some such. Apart from a couple plot-holes and the ewoks it wasn't bad.

Well I can't say I approve of Lucas' priorities, but I'm glad they didn't go with that bittersweet ending for Return of the Jedi. Also, I liked the Ewoks. If there's one thing you can learn from them it's to never underestimate a primitive species, esp. when they have the home field advantage.

Sorry for semi-necromancing the thread. I didn't bother commenting at first, but then I remembered this book I read a while back. It was basically a really extensive research on the history of Star Wars and what went on behind the scenes. Naturally, it should be taken with a grain of salt, but regardless of how accurate it was, there were still some interesting things written there.

Apparently Kurtz made a similar claim when interviewed back in 2000 [http://www.filmthreat.com/interviews/8/]. In it he mentioned the "bittersweet" RotJ ending as part of a bigger picture where Star Wars wouldn't end with RotJ but continue for another three movies. The author of the book then goes on to dissect Kurtz's claims and comes to the conclusion that he's probably got more than a few things mixed up.

Yeah, yeah, I know. "Don't believe what you read". Not saying it's all true, just putting it out there, there is a lot of rumors and myths surrounding Star Wars and what it could or was intended to be.
