I could have gotten a bittersweet and poignant ending, one of my favorite kind of endings, but Lucas changed it!?

I need to calm down with some Oldboy. Possibly do a run on Mass Effect 2 where everyone dies.
I know how you feel.

Actually, one of my favourite endings to a film I've seen is the Orphanage. If a film makes me cry like a little ***** I consider it a great success. I'd love if star wars pulled the rug from under me and everything didn't turn out okay.

That's, you know, life...

Jeez that sounds like an extremely depressing final film. I don't think the films would have been as influential if it had ended like that outline, regardless of merchandise.

Lucas missed a golden opportunity, think about it; Han's Dead Corpse action figures! Who wouldn't buy three of those?

Not that it was bad by any means, I think that if there had been a balance between the darker ending and the space-teddy bears, RotJ would have been so much better.

Hell, if they had just replaced the Ewoks with Wookiees, and left everything else the way it was, I might have liked it as much as ESB.
There you said it, wookies would have been great.
I still feel like the trailer tricked me into watching Episode 3, just to be disappointed by the short wookie battle on kashyyk.

For the movies the grim ending would worked fine.

But then Ewoks would get slaughtered by Neutron bombs. :)

I'm surprised no one mentioned this before but...this is old news. Kurtz has been badmouthing Lucas for years now.
Kurtz might be exaggerating a bit, but is probably closer to telling the truth than Lucas ever has been. Lucas changes his story every few years, then claims he was "misquoted" before, even though there are physical interviews with him that contradict his statements.

I'm actually not convinced the Sad ending would've been very good. The Happy ending was part of Star Wars charm.

Should we have lost the goddamn Ewoks for Wookies though? Hells yes.

Make sure to be as much of a dick to the crew on the way as possible :p

Ugh... count me in for being deeply oppossed to the idea of a grimdark ending. Some days, good should win, the redeemable should be redeemed, and pure evil should be chucked down a deep pit. Yub Yub, you grimdark lovers. Yub Freaking Yub.

The whole deal with Lucas being out for the money isn't that surprising to me. Star Wars was one of the movies that made the blockbuster movie type. Plus it was the first movie that really got into merchandising. So its not really that surprising to me to find out that the third movie got changes so that it would be more sellable.

As for the alternative ending, I liked the ending they had. It wasn't bad or anything, and if you want a more somber end just look into the Expanded Universe. The Rebellion fights the Empire for a couple more decades and plenty of other horrible shit goes down (Yuuzhan Vong invasion anyone?). Plus theres the whole "Endorian Holocaust" that someone figured out. It really takes the end of RotJ and makes it not quite so happy.

Here's a helpful link: http://www.theforce.net/swtc/holocaust.html

to me the movie and lucas earned a special place in hell for what they did to boba fett. they kill off one of if not the most popular character in the franchise in such a ***** way but killing han was considered to dark
Ohhh someone isn't familiar with the expanded universe. Speaking of which if the movie ended differently, that would completely screw up all the great expanded universe novels now. What would the Thrawn Trilogy be without Han Solo?
if your talking about the part where he gets out, looses his memory, helps han escape trouble, goes back to his home planet, becomes leader of his clan, and finally trains hans daughter...... yes i do know but i didnt when i was ten so i hated the movie

that makes way too much sense. like he said, the focus was on toy sales.. that totally explains the prequel trilogy. It was all about the toys.. the cart drove the horse, and the films bombed.
not according to the profit return on the movies (in just box-office sales). Like it or not, the films were HUGELY successful (not even counting toy sales). And what do you think is more important? People making money and keeping their jobs or "ruining" a beloved franchise (i personally liked some of the concepts and stories in the prequel trilogy, just didnt like that guy who played Anakin... so annoying...)

Supposedly, Lucas made Ewoks and Jar-Jar to appeal to the "kiddies." Now, Star Wars was literally the first movie I had EVER seen has a young'n. My brother, sister, and I would literally watch them on VHS, rewind it, and watch it again. Coming from someone who saw Episode 1 and Return of the Jedi when they were still in elementary, Jar-Jar and Ewoks suck. Storm-troopers and Boba Fett, however, do not.

When I was ten I just liked watching Luke kill people with his lightsaber.

Personally I liked the way Return of the Jedi turned out. If we had the darker ending then who knows how the Expanded Universe would have been. Then again I'm one of the few people who actually cares about the books.
It's like with anything lore wise. You got people that only just care about the now, and then the ones that actualy care about the bigger picture.
