i'm wanting to know who here has actually achieved lucid dreaming, and if so, how. i want to try it cause it seems like it'd be something cool to do, so tell me how you were able to do it.

I've achieved lucid dreaming, as in being aware of the dream and controlling my actions however it is not like some sort of instant fantasy land where you can summon whatever you want. That takes lots and lots of practice.

If you want to simply become aware of dreaming. Reality checks or keep a dream diary.

i know it won't be some instant type deal, i just want to be able to get started on learning how to know that i'm dreaming. after that it's really all in my own practice without any outside help so i'm just trying to get as much help as i can to make it there

Watch the film Waking Life just before you go to bed.

Or just watch the film as it's a bloody good viewing.

I think it's the lamp I always keep on in my room, making my dreaming more fragile, since I'm (still) afraid of the dark.

It's not all it's cracked up to be. Also, after I achieve it, BLINKING wakes me.

I've tried but for some reason I still never believe I'm in a dream, even when it's really really obvious, like when I see myself in a 3rd person view.
I've kept a journal, but I still can't make myself aware of my dream state.

I watched a flick called Waking Life (i think thats what its called) and it talked about a couple "tricks" that you can notice in a dream to make yourself aware of the fact that you are dreaming, and once you do that you are pretty much free to do whatever you want. Look for Digital watches and digital time displays, they will not be legible; instead looking like a garbled swirling mess. Also, you are not able to affect light levels in a dream, so try flipping light switches or turning on lamps etc. These worked for me a couple times, the hard part is staying asleep after you realize that you are dreaming, as it tends to snap you awake more often than not. Good luck!

Just after 2 weeks of reality checks, I got a lucid dream 2 days ago. Thing is, as soon as I realized it, I woke up. It's like the shock wakes you or something...

Anyways, I proceed to do reality checks in hope that I will become lucid again.

I used to have lucid dreams quite often 3-5 years ago, but haven't had a single one the last few years. Pisses me off to no end really -.-

generally if I want this, I'll drink a pot of coffee then try and sleep. The caffine keeps you awake enough to know it's a dream as well as letting you put cognative input when you're actually awake but the erratic sleep lets you have very strange and deep dreams. had one last night and it was awesome. This method is great for progressing stagnated and or writers blocked stories.

I found I have a couple of 'tells' in dreams that I sometimes notice.
Though it was really weird last night I was in a dream where I would figure out I was dreaming then 'wake up' then later on realise I'm still asleep. Very much like Inception in some ways but more of the kind of dream where you wake up for school, get to a point and then wake up and realise you've just dreamed all of that.

For advice on how to lucidly dreams... uh, be overly critical of details, think logically. A lot of the time my subconscious seems to throw something in randomly.

I never have lucid dreams and it is frustrating as hell because my friends brag about being able to do it.

I've had a couple. One helped me get through a difficult time in my life, actually, because I dreamt of my best friend and it felt like I was actually spending time with him (instead of living halfway across the globe). I don't really recall the second time.

Both instances were achieved when I looked at my hands in-dream. I hear it's a common trick.

As others have said, keep a dream diary (remember to write your dreams down immediately upon waking, this is imperative to your success).

i've been asleep and known that it was a dream but didn't wake up but it also just passed. it was there and gone in an instant in the dream. that's the closest i've been to it. i think i've realized it was a dream once before but at that point i tend to just lose myself in what my subconscious creates for me, not what i will create cause my dreams are always so damn weird that there's not much need for change. but i want to try, just once at least, to see what it's like to control a world around me. that's my main goal in starting this thread.

EVERY time I realise it's a dream, I wake up. It really is sort of like the surprise wakes you up.

Which is a shame.

its a little but wordy but this seems like the best approach. Like 'Alex Winter' said. This isn't some giant fantasy. You dont choose what your dream is, you just appear there. Lucid dreaming is no different. It all comes down to one single word. Conscious

Let me grab the chart (courtesy of Deco:)

Haven't experimented with it much myself, but best of luck to you!

I developed the ability to take myself out of a dream.
Does that count?
I remember I got sucked into a tornado and I sort of "shocked" myself or forced myself out into reality.

It isn't very good, many of my dreams are lucid and it is really a let down. 9/10 times you wake up being saddened because you realise the false reality you control was abruptly ended due to an alarm clock.

While I am (or I was for some time) capable of "lucid dreaming" all those had one bad side to them. I always DIED in the end. Mainly from being shot in the head but also from getting stabbed, choked, curb stomped you count it. It actually happened so many times that I got used to it. No more waking up with the the sudden "OMG! *sigh*", I just woke up normally like getting shot in the face was perfectly normal to me.

I'm not capable of lucid dreaming any more... in fact I don't really have dreams now :(. Makes me kinda tired to just lie down in bed and than get up right after that without any "dream sequence" between all that.
