Lucid Dreams: Bad Experience

I'm not usually bothered by my dreams, but this one was different. Lucid Dreams don't come naturally to me, but when they do, I try to make the most out of them.

Except this time, I feel really shaken by the experience. I beat one of my friends, breaking some of her ribs. I just feel really uncomfortable with myself right now. Why would I think something like that? What made me want to do it? I've never wanted to hurt her, or any of my friends in life, but the fact that it happened in a dream I had control over scares me.

I feel regret and guilt over letting it happen, which is crazy. It didn't happen, and yet, in my mind, it did.

Have you ever had a lucid dream where you lost control of your actions?

Kinda. I was shooting civilians down...with a nerf gun. You see I was part of a terrorist attack causing chaos. I managed to run away before I did more.

Quite a disturbing dream.

I've had a lucid semi-dream. I do believe the term is sleep paralysis.

I woke up, but couldn't move. [sub]This was especially terrifying for me, as that's something of a primal fear of mine.[/sub] While that was scary enough for me, I then felt like something was watching me.

At which point I started levitating.

And slowly rotating.

And being slowly pulled off my bed...

At which point I bolted up, screaming.

*Note: I don't think I was actually assaulted by a demon or the like. Hallucinations, especially ones with an "evil presence" are supposedly semi-common with sleep paralysis. The more you know!

I got punched out of a dream if that makes any sense... I was doing my usual flying and smashing big stuff and a guy made out of a mirror punched me and I woke up screaming.

Dream group run by me plug... [www.escapistmagazine.com/groups/view/The-Escapist-Dreamer-Society]

I've only ever had a semi-lucid dream where I could fly for a bit but then it became rather scripted again. I wish I could lucid dream on command...

One can dream ;). And I just wanted to point out that I already was in the group. Or is this some new secret group?

I had a lucid dream the other night actually. The scene that left me the most shaken up is when i found a house party in my back garden, but when i went in there was all my ex girlfriends accusing me of all the things i did wrong during our relationship....

...Lets just say memory lane isn't where i'd like to move to...

Yep, feelings of dread and being watched are two fairly common sleep paralysis symptoms.

OT: I've never had the experience of lucid dreaming, or sleep paralysis even. But I have suffered from Exploding Head Syndrome [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploding_head_syndrome] in the past, which were weird experiences.

Also, if you're looking for good lucid dreaming stories, head on over to Reddit and go to r/nosleep on there. Scary shit.

I experienced exploding head syndrome a few times. When it happens to me it's weird, because just before it happens, I swear I hear music playing, but it's not. Mainly because I know what it is I hear, but none of the song made sense.

Also I've had a lucid dream once, and it was one of the most horrible dreams I have ever experienced. I normally have dreams that I would think that most people would consider it as a nightmare, but those are my normal dreams.

What experienced was what I would call a "lucid nightmare", it is when you realize that you are dreaming, but as soon as you try anything, your entire dream changes into a nightmare. You may be aware that you are dreaming, but you can't do anything. Also you feel as though you are trapped in your dream, because while you may only be asleep for a few hours, in you dream years will pass.

I felt as though I was in that dream for at least three years, and I remember almost everything that had happened. The most vivid memory of that dream is when I was yelling at myself to wake up, while running from some sort of creature. That memory was when I first started dreaming.

I heard somewhere that lucid dreaming is actually going to ease nightmares. If you encounter some evil monster, don't run away. Instead warmly hug and sex up with it(I'm not joking). Your mind does the rest in turning the evils away.

But to OPs story:

I thought the sole purpose of lucid dreaming was killing, raping and pillaging. To do things and experience emotions that you would never have in real life. Same as games, porn or anything else non-real for that matter. It's not real so no worries.

Anyways I have tried to achieve lucidity myself, but haven't succeeded (at least I don't remember doing so) yet. Any tips or tricks from someone experienced?

Wish I could have some lucid dreams, then I'd have some fun...

As for my dreams, I generally only remember bits and pieces of them... but there's this one dream I can recall almost perfectly:

I was in the den of my house (before we had it remodeled) playing with some figures (I think, I don't remember all the details) and the TV was on showing what looked like one of those [Adult Swim] bumpers... only it didn't make sense. Then the screen filled up with words (or were they eyes?) and then came what looked like Smurfs but the faces were all wrong... and then I woke up.

To this day, I have no idea what it all meant, if anything.

i think most people here, including the OP, misunderstand what a lucid dream is.

in a lucid dream you are fully aware that you are dreaming, and thus are in full control over everything in the dream. you can change, create or make disappear everything in the dream with a thought, because you are aware of the fact that you are actually asleep.

interesting stories though, even though most of them are not lucid dreams really.

it's true. i first heard about and learned how to do lucid dreaming when in therapy for chronic nightmares. works really well.

as for tips: if you have experience with meditation techniques of any sort, you could try wake induced lucid dreaming. it's harder to achieve but pretty much considered the holy grail of the whole ordeal. there are several techniques, you can easily find many online.

personally i have had better success with sleep induced. i perform a number of so called reality checks during my day. the theory behind that is that when you accustom yourself to certain routines you are likely to also perform them when dreaming, and thus realize: "holy shit, this is a dream!"
there are several possible checks. pinching yourself is a very classic one. holding your nose closed and checking if you are still able to breathe. looking at your hand and counting your fingers (in dreams you will have an odd number or changing fingers most of the time). try to read something (in dreams letters will most of the time appear as strange symbols). there are many more, those are a few that work for me. it's important that before you check you take a few seconds to convince yourself that you are dreaming right now. otherwise you will just routinely breeze over the checks and pass them, even in dreams.
if you indeed remember to perform a check in-dream, and you achieve lucidity, it's very likely that from your exitement and irritation everything will instantly collapse and you will wake up. don't be discouraged, you have to keep trying.

hope some of that helps.

I often have weird dreams like that, especially when I'm not in my usual sleeping routine - if I crash out after work on my back, then I have what I call meloncholic dreams. When I have a meloncholic dream, I wake up feeling damn horrible, like depression with no real reason to be depressed. I'm thinking you had something similar.

I think that a lot of your worries are acted out in dreams subconciously - dreams are never 100% lucid, you might just have been worried about this person for some reason, anything really, a miserable status update on Facebook, that sort of thing. I wouldn't worry about it, don't dwell on it, because IMO it proves that you really care about that person on a subconcious level, and that's nothing to be worried about. You just acted out your fears so that your mind can deal with them... maybe spend a little time with your friend, so subconciously you know they're fine.

I've never had an actual lucid dream but I do realize I am dreaming in a lot of them, I just can't control anything. Last time that happened was a few nights ago when I was dreaming I lost my dog and I kept thinking I found him but it turned out to be a completely different dog. Even tho in the back of my head I was thinking "you're dreaming, he's in the next room sleeping on the couch like every night, relax", I woke up feeling like I had actually lost him until he trotted into my room for a morning hug.

there was one where i made a nice wee castle for me to explore.
walked down a corridor, got jumped from behind and cracked the attacker's head open on the wall, dragged it along and it was my friend's little sister.

best time was when i walked up to this guy, lets call him a dick, punched him out of a fourth floor window and flew after him. saved his ass.

I have weird and questionable dreams sometimes. But I feel fine about them.

Just recently I had a dream where I had a weird love affair with my sister...and I don't have a sister. It was just some woman I made up in my head and then decided was my sister.

What could it mean?

No kidding, the captcher reads "temptations". It's so appropriate!
