Wow I feel old, I don't recognize anything you kids are talking about. I played from Fallen Empires to Tempest when the balance started getting totally out of whack.
Guh, I feel even older. I've been playing since Alpha. And no, I don't own a Black Lotus or any Moxen. (though I sure as hell wish I did) I played primarily casually up until about Odyssey I think. Took a hiatus. Once Mirrodin came out though, I jumped right back in with both feet. A block that's 50% artifacts, including it's lands? I'm sold! In any case, been playing regularly since then. Kamigawa and Ravnica were colossal let downs though. Not much flair to them I thought. Coldsnap was a surprise and brought back many memories of Ice Age. Timespiral block was both refreshingly new and nostalgic at the same time. I absolutely adored Lorwyn-Shadowmoor block(s). Faeries were a ***** to play against, but otherwise the block just felt so cool. Besides, being able to build a deck, in block mind you, that contained not one, but 4 infinite combos and could win by turn 4 to 6 consistantly? Nothing but awesome. Alara looks exciting. I'm digging the new Exalted mechanic as well as the "5+ power critters matter" mechanics. However, I fear there may be a resurgence of Affinity in Extended formats with all of the artifact control and aggro heavy cards of the Esper shard. Tidehollow Sculler could be the new Mesmeric Fiend that can beat for 2 instead of 1. Ethersworn Canonist is a one-sided Rule of Law attached to yet another 2/2 beater for 2. Etherium Master will likely hit the table as at least a 6/6 for 3 but also beefs up your entire army, even the ornithopters. Salvage Titan will likely become a staple turn 1 6/4 that will leave the opponent slapping their head. Lastly, Etherium Sculptor just makes Affinity even faster. (Not that it needs to be).
Anyway, I've gone on long enough, so I'll wrap up. I've built way to many decks over the years to list, so I'll just say I'm primarily a green mage at heart and love mid-range decks, whether they be aggressive, control, or combo in nature. Oh, and one of my favorite decks would be Affinity, but I've been banned from using it by my friends, so that one doesn't count.
As a final note, I'll ask what format everyone here likes to play in the most. For me, it's a tie between Emperor, Commander, and good 'ole 1 on 1.
