Magic vs. Technology

Ive been thinking about this for a long time but I can come to no conclusion. If a massive war was to start between two factions, (I know that this is way overplayed) one dedicated to the study of magic and all its arts, and the other dedicated to the advancement and development of technology. My question is who would win and why do you think so?

EDIT: Any magic that you have seen or read about counts, same with technology

What kind of magic is it? I've seen magic that ranges from throwing fireballs to the power to extinguish all life on Earth. Unless you gives us specific examples of the magic they use, it's hard to judge.

Technology would win because magic isn't real.

Edit: My word! I seem to have gone gonzo!

The war updated: Jim tries to confuse the scientists with the amazing interlocking rings, the scientists retaliate with a bio-engineered flesh eating virus, science wins.

I'm going with technology on this one unless magic has a way of turning massive robots bent on world wide genocide into fluffy bunnies.

Technology would win.
I believe the phrase is: "Science will fuck you!!!"
See? How can we lose? The beautiful steel of machines... not a wasted movement, it is perfect.
So, I'd side with Technology, seeing as we know that is real, where so far magic hasn't been proven.
Also, on topic:

Substitute 'Magic is' for 'Witches are'. Or which ever way around. He argues for the same thing, basically. (Ok, not really, but whatever, you get the point, right?)

Magic from fantasy books?, then magic, I would just have Pug (from the midkemia books) annihilate all of you puny scientists, magic can do ANYTHING, and he is the most powerful game of them all.

I say technologists. I tend to follow Arcanum's theory on it: Technology is the use of natural law; Magic is the bending of natural law. The two counteract each other and terminate.

However, the technologist tends to have the stronger physique of the two needing to haul all the components around.

Use the shadowrun mentality:
Take out the magi first, they are just too unpredictable.

That is the problem you see. Even if we scale up both sides equally (a massive necromantic rite that will end all life on earth equals some anti-matter weapon that can do the same) then magic still remains unpredictable. In individual cases you know what a man with a gun will be able to do, you can tell by the weapon he is carrying the maximum damage he will cause. A guy with nothing more then a pointed rune covered stick is still unpredictable, you have no way to tell just what magic he is mastered and how it will be used.

So take the magi out first. Preferably with a big gun from a long distance away.... ummm, now I am confused on what side of the line I would stand.

Still going to have to side with magic. When you can kill someone with wriggling a finger then who needs a gun?

The problem with magic in a lot of settings is there arn't really any rules to it and it has the general notion of "If you're powerful enough, you can do anything" which would mean Science is screwed. Unless we can count any sort of science from any fiction like the Magic side can. If so, Science will win because its cooler.

Whatever scientists might develop, needs materials an external source of energy. Magic in most settings seems to pretty much pull the energy and mater from the hat. On the other hand, it is generally accepted that magic takes a lot of time to master, whereas science can just arm two battallions of grunts with cheap guns and point them towards the mage. So they are dependent on different resources, but I guess that in the long run, magic would win. Unless the war starts by the science faction taking out the magic learning institutions in a surprise attack.

If you go the Arcanum way, like DeadlyYellow suggested, then it's probably science. It seems that many mages in such a setting can be silenced by simply putting a big steam engine in the vicinity, so science faction's cities would be practically impossible to capture by the mages.

In some other settings where science and magic coexist, the former might actually run on the latter, an example being Wolsung. In those settings, science faction would probably win, since they tend to pack more of a punch, but risk losing the technology as a consequence of the conflict.

So yeah, I guess it all depends on what science/magic ideas you use. Especially with regards to magic, which can range from minor cantrips to nigh-divine power throughout settings.

Just watch some Full metal Alchemist. Something destructive in magic can be mimicked and equally destructive in science and technology.

The real worry is when some smart ass mixes the two...ouch
