I have two or so broken controllers, and, while not American, I'd love to do those.
Shame about bloody postage costs though.
And I don't know what the first ammendment is anyway...
I assume it's something about freedom/speech?

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
So ya. First one's kinda a big one around here :)

We should send him some of the Sega peripherals to emphasize his failure in trying to get video games banned

Actually we should probably mail some to Jack Thompson :\

I totally would do this, but unfortunately, all of my controllers are in perfect working order.

Wait...
This guy's name is Lee Yee?
Sorry "The Honorable Lee Yee?"
If I could stop laughing I might take part but I can't. It sounds like a clown name.

I'm just glad that all of the real serious problems in the US have been tackled so they can finally get down to this video game business.

That's awesome. Sadly I'm not the kind of person who goes around rage-breaking controllers and so I have nothing to send this guy. These things are expensive, I take care of them. Not break them when I get mad. And I don't exactly have the income right now to break one on purpose just for this (if I did, I would, because frankly that's awesome).

I'm doing this with my old N64 controller. I wrote "I believe in the first amendment" at the top. And on each hand grip I wrote: "Hands off my rights." Under the big red start button I wrote "Thinking." And on the back I wrote "Gov't can't control me" and signed my name.

wait... he'll try to use that we are vocally angry at him taking away first amendment rights? I fucking hate that.

I keep getting told two different versions of this vote/law.

1-the law will stop under 18's buying games that are rated 18+

2-it's something to do with banning all games with adult content

Now #1 seems perfectly sensible, just like kids shouldn't be able to go out and buy porn/the latest fore film from Slashy McButtrape. If the US doesn't already have a law stopping adult material from getting into kids hands...it should do.

#2 seems obviously a big deal with far reaching consequences for some big name titles.

Which one, if any is it?
I thought it had something to do that it would make it so retailers strip the rated 18+ games from teh shelves.

It's #1. The big fear is that it may result in the same response as if it was #2, due to knee-jerk reactions from large US retailers.

Sadly all my controllers are in working order so I can not contribute.

I kind of want to buy a copy of Battle Raper off ebay and send it to this guy as soon as the law gets shot down.

Surely if it was that easy to mail anonymous packages of electronics to politicians then the terrorists would have won by now... I mean if they x-ray these packages and see the wires, do you really think they'll get passed on to the Senator?
If the package is suspicious then the post office will open it up and check it out. Once they recognize that it is just a busted controller they will send it on its way.

"(joy)stick in to the Man"
An interesting and perverted typo.

OT: I'm not sure if I have any broken controllers...
And wouldn't people just throw out a broken controller?
I think it would be better to just sign a petition.

Does it really matter what the law is about? I thought the idea was they were trying to defend the law by saying games don't deserve protection under the 1st Amendment, so if the Supreme Court doesn't strike it down, then games can't enjoy the rights of protected speech. In other words, if anyone wants to ban it, for any reason, they can. So it's not as much about what the law is about in fine details, but that the senator is trying to make games the same as libel, death threats, and shouting "fire" in a crowded theater.

I suppose the question is, with number 1, do we really want to equate M-rated video games with pornography? That's going the completely wrong direction.

That. Is. Wrong.
Well I think that excessive violence is something that should be censored more than nudity/sex. Don't get me wrong I LOVE violent games and films etc. I mean I help run a zombie site! I personally thing that ultra violent games that are made for adult should be sold just to adults. If a parent wants to buy the game for their kid then fine it's up to them to be a terrible parent or not.

In the UK it's simply dealt with by the same way films are dealt with. ie everything is given an age rating ranging from U (universally acceptable), PG (parental guidence), 12 (age), 15, 18.

The store won't sell you anything movie/game unless you are that age (proof of ID if you look under).

There isn't this system or an equivelent in the US? If this law is just putting somethign like this in palce then surely it's just sensible its like not letting a 5 year old buy a gun.

Or is there no system in place and people want to put in something which will make adult games a thing of the past?

Ninja'd. Only less terrorists, more security checks on incoming mail.

Not that it particularly bothers me either way, I'm British.

Yes there is an equivilent, the ESRB gives americans a rating system of E for everyone, T for Teen etc. etc. and it's very effective.

But look at it like this, once they make ONE example getting through by saying "It shouldn't fall under the first amendment and should be censored" that gives them precedent to do bigger things. I don't know if your aware but if something like this gets allowed it DOES open up a bucketload of other things, like censoring the internet which some pushy politicians in America ARE trying to do, and which has been done in China. So don't think this is being blown out of proportion, I actually have done legal classes.

Do you know that if someone is breaking into your house to steal from you and they trip and injure themselves, they can sue you and WIN? What if shops are so afraid of doing things like being sued because a parent brought a game for a child that they no longer stock them. Do you really want a game like Valkyria Chronicles to be put in some secluded area of the store with a large black curtain that says "Oh look at him going in there" something to be ashamed about? because that's what this law leads to.

This isn't a 'ratings' system this is 'controlling what you can and can not buy' once they justify one thing ignoring freedom of speech they can justify everything because they have precedence

EDIT: Not to mention that online stores such as Steam will most likely get cracked down and disabled because "Oh you can sell to minors who can lie about there age, your a risk"

actually it's to take away 1st amendment right from video games or at least that's what extra credit said
