Not sure if this is Off-Topic or Religion & Politics, I'll just put it in Off-topic for now and a mod can move it if they feel it needs to be moved.

It would seem more and more people are getting sick of the antics of Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church.

A motorist fired pepper spray Saturday at a group of protesters and counter-protesters outside a funeral for a U.S. Marine in Omaha, Nebraska, police said.
The incident occurred shortly before 10 a.m. (11 a.m. ET) as members of a small Kansas church that protests at military funerals and counter-protesters stood about a half block away from First United Methodist Church during services for Staff Sgt. Michael Bock, 26, who died August 13 in Afghanistan's Helmand province.
A man in a Ford-150 pickup truck drove up, extended his arm and sprayed with a large can, police said. His vehicle was stopped a few minutes later.
"Initial indications are he was probably targeting the Westboro Baptist Church" protesters, said officer Michael Pecha, a spokesman for Omaha police.
George Vogel, 62, who lives just north of Omaha, was booked for 16 counts of misdemeanor assault and one count of felony assault on a police officer for the pepper-spray exposure, police said. Vogel also faces one count of child neglect because his child was in the truck, Pecha told CNN.
Westboro members, led by pastor Fred Phelps, claim that God is punishing the United States for "the sin of homosexuality," and soldiers' deaths are part of that punishment. Members have traveled the country, shouting at grieving family members at funerals and displaying such signs as "Thank God for Dead Soldiers," "God Blew Up the Troops" and "AIDS Cures Fags."
A 2005 protest by church members at the funeral of a Missouri soldier prompted state lawmakers to pass legislation criminalizing picketing "in front or about" a funeral location or procession. A federal judge earlier this month rejected Missouri's tight restrictions, saying they violated the free speech clause of the First Amendment.
It was unclear Saturday evening whether any of the 16 victims were Westboro Baptist members or counter-protesters. About a dozen members of Westboro were on hand, Pecha said.
The incident occurred during the funeral, as nearly 600 members of the Patriot Guard ringed the church and stood vigil, the group's state leader said.
Scott Knudsen, Patriot Guard Riders captain for Nebraska, said no members of the Patriot Guard had any interaction with the church members or counter-protesters, which he numbered Saturday at about 12.
"We don't get close to them," Knudsen said of the Westboro members. "We have our backs to them."
Patriot Guard members, who come when they are invited by families, shield families from distraction, Knudsen said.
"We don't condone counter-protesters," said Knudsen, adding he was troubled by Saturday's incident.
"It's inappropriate," he said. "It's a funeral service."
Extra officers were on hand for any possible altercations, but there were only verbal exchanges before the truck drove up, police said. There were no altercations between Westboro members and the Patriot Guard, Pecha said.
Messages to Topeka-based Westboro Baptist Church weren't returned Saturday night.

I for one don't blame the man for what he did, if WBC want to be dicks, they'll be treated as such back. What do you think Escapist? Would you have done the same if you were able to?

It's terrible, the Westboro Baptist Church will probably sue the municipality claiming their civil rights were violated by the cities inability to protect their free speech. They may even win and be awarded damages (money), this is exactly why these trolls do this.

Someone should make a movie about that!

"Thank God for Dead Soldiers," "God Blew Up the Troops" and "AIDS Cures Fags."

I'd respond to this, but in doing so I would probably get suspended for the massive amount of rage and hate I would spew. So I'll just leave it at this: Fuck you Westboro, I hate you and hope you burn in hell.

And thats me being nice.

However despite how absolutely sickening this is, they are within their rights. Still doesn't excuse them from being complete assholes.

I keep thinking of that one line Peach Wilkins uses.

Now, I bet when your boss waggled out of Hell, he done told the Devil he'd be right back, and the Devil says "Sure thing, Mr. Phelps. I'll hold you a spot."

It's amazing how well it works.

I always thought that Paintball guns from a nearby building would be a better...."attack," for lack of a better word.

not entirely. the constitution roughly states that you have your rights as long as they don't infringe upon the rights of others. picketing a funeral procession, making the service unbearable certainly infringes on other rights. I'm surprised the man didn't start taking swings at anyone not knocked over by the spray.
Eh, it could be twisted either way to make it seem if they're within their rights or not.

Either way, I would probably have upgraded from "pepper spray" to "bat".

I don't seem to remember that line. Was it from an audio log?

Wow. The sin of Homosexuality... Fuck off Fred Phelps. This is just stupid. I mean sure your religion doesn't justify same sex intercourse, but why take it out on the troops. Y'know, the guys who are fighting to protect your right like ooo.. I don't know.. freedom of speech that way you could protest?I know your not aiming at the troops but your only giving the family more trouble when they just lost some one in the conflict. You couldn't protest any where else...

THANK YOU! I grow tired of hearing people saying Religion is the root of all evil. Where its mostly the people who are corrupt or just using religion for their own thing. To me, religion is like a tool. It can be use for both good and evil. Just like everything else in the world.
