Manga, not Anime.
I was going to say that a fair amount of people seem to be recommending anime instead of manga, or manga based on the strength of the anime when they've not seen the anime.

I'll second those. I never got into the One Piece manga, because it's HUGE. I liked what I saw, and started watching the anime instead. I dropped the Bleach anime in favour of the manga. The FMA manga has some good parts, and appears to be reaching a climax. And Fairy Tail is pretty decent as well.

also the sound track is amazing!
While we're at it, Stand-Alone Complex. Awesome soundtrack as well. Hell, anything by Yoko Kanno tends to be awesome.

On-topic, I'd also recommend Hellsing, but it gets REALLY bloody.
its not that bloody...depends if your a wuss on that sort of thing =/ lol

Oh shit, forgot one.

Dramacon, it's sickeningly cute but it has and very realistic story with great characters. Svetlana Chmakova is awesome and if I had less masculinity and more money I'd buy the full hardcover book in a store.

I would like to recommend D. Gray Man. Also, Black Cat is a very good manga. I didn't even like manga much until I read it, so it's worth checking out.

gin tama full of mad loveable samuri hwo should all be in the loony bin,and tied up(they have a masohist ninja)

claymore.like bleach as it's in the supernatural shonen genre. but without the annoying charachters and more shorter and sharper stories. I don't like that artist he isn't very friendly, at the start of every chapter there is a black page with the claymore logo on it.

naruto you know him you love him, the artist is a real nice fella. he wrote a short personal life story as an wxtra in the books.

they (shonen jump) have just started serialising tagami bachii (letter bee) it looks good but they have only released 1 chapter so it is one to look out for

rave master. hgetting sick of typing so

Fruits Baskets
Sorry, I have to stop you there.

Fruits Basket? A manga with absolutely no plot whatsoever? I suppose it's different for different people, but I stopped expecting something interesting to happen after Book 2.

As for my recommendation, I would say Hellsing, because while gory, it just screams of great writing.

If we were a few months earlier, I would've recommended Rabbit doubt. However, it really got botherline silly now.

I like Pluto. It has some elements from many mangas and comics but it still feel fresh.

You can't dislike Hellsing. Even if you tried, the sheer awesome would just beat you into submission.

Series I read are...

Great Teacher Onizuka (GTO) (finished)
Gantz (ongoing)
Law of Ueki (finished)
Battle Royale (finished)
Fullmetal Alchemist (ongoing)
Bleach (ongoing)
Ouran High School Host Club (ongoing)
Deathnote (finished)
Shaman King (ongoing)

I also really liked Beet the Vandal Buster, but it was discontinued at volume 12.

Also very glad to see that GTO was mentioned more than once, was the first series I ever completed, and holds a special place in my pants... I mean heart.

EDIT: can't beleive I forgot Buso Renkin, everyone else should be ashamed for leaving this off your lists too.

You are amazing. Also, nice choice with Cromartie.
Thanks. I think a recommendation is worth more if you can back said recommendation up with solid reasoning. Even if the thread OP doesn't pick up one of these comics (or shows) then someone else in the thread might.

Really? Well, in the beginning I thought it was like immortal protagonists. Still, I'm not going to pick up a series that gets good 35 volumes in.
Yes. I'd much rather pick a series that starts good and stays good. Especially one that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars to read (legally).

My recommendations for Kaiji and Monster stand for you, too. If you like Deathnote, Battle Royale, and other dark suspenseful works, then you might get a kick out of some of the best high-tension drama manga on the market. (Warning, Monster is not for the squeamish. I am not entirely sure Battle Royale is enough to prepare you for it. While the latter is ruthless and dystopian-in-brutal-microcosm, the former is a stark and unrelenting battle against the sort of pure evil the likes of which most writers flinch when they try to write.)

And it's nice to see GTO get a mention. I probably should've recommended that, too, myself. So I'll do so right here. It manages to do comedy and drama just right, with a main character who manages to be lecherous, boorish, irresponsible, and yet manly and inspiring all the same. No, it has nothing to do with Pontiacs, despite being named after a car (though it might actually be named after a Mitsubishi). It's about one heck of a Great Teacher, Onizuka [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GreatTeacherOnizuka].

Anybody who's read GTO probably wishes they had a teacher like Onizuka Eikichi. To put things in perspective, Onizuka had only two sensible choices for gainful employment given his skills and education: Organized Crime or becoming a Teacher. Wherein some "inspirational teacher" stories and shows are about well-educated, clean-cut men improving the lives of inner-city kids, GTO is about an inner-city thug and wastrel shaking up an upper-crust private school and saving a bunch of messed-up, wealthy, neglected, and disturbed students from themselves. He teaches life lessons with the help of his old gang members, is willing to endure near-death experiences multiple times in order to save his students from themselves, and to solve his students' and friends' problems by punching those problems in the face.

It's both heartwarming and pure distilled awesome wrapped up in a hilarious ribbon tied in a manner meant to resemble a man's genitals.

It's 25 volumes and licensed by Tokyopop. Highly recommended. The predecessor to the series, Shonan Junai Gumi, is pretty good but it's clear that GTO is where the author hits his stride.

I'll definatly look them out, just yesterday picked upi teh last Law of Ueki, leaving me with nothing more for a month or two, and as for not the squeemish, have a look at Gantz if you haven't already, a VERY unrelenting story, it start strong but just keeps getting more and more f*cked up. I'll admit it takes a volume or two to figure out exactly what's goin gon, but it's well worth the ride.

]Fullmetal Alchemist. Very well done. Don't do Naruto.
Death Note is pretty good, too.
You would be surprised man. In the latest chapters of Naruto it became pretty obvious that the guy behind the whole story is a pretty awesome storyteller, and I mean AWESOME. It summed up the whole story of the thing and made a 180 degree turn to the whole thing. And the guy is not afraid of killing important characters for the sake of telling the tale of his hero, you gotta love it when they kill a character who you've seen for like 3 years. I get why you try to make the point with Naruto, but it actually applies more to series like Bleach or One Piece, which are constantly going nowhere, the same way Dragon ball used to be.
(However, unless I'm wrong, Dragon Ball was the first important one to do this so in my heart it will always kick ass)

It's not that it gets good 35 volumes in... it gets another extremely big switch in the story, the manga was always quite good. Good fights, cool places, lovable characters, anywho, yeah, I wouldn't read it if I hadn't from the start just because there is SO MUCH to read. But if you have the time and are looking for a good epic story with awesome characters, this is the one to read, as I said, many people actually start with One Piece and Bleach and those sort of stuff, which became pretty bad after the first few issues. I think they were trying to make the story too long for their own sake.
