I enjoy the DS version as well. Its like a mini N64 or a SUPER Super Nintendo with two screens.

You're not alone...

Anyways, I would advise against playing SM64 now, because it has aged very badly. Try Galaxy, although frustrating, it's really fun.
Don't know about that. SM64 still looks great to me. Then again, could just be nostalgia clouding my vision.
Seconded.
I loved Super Mario 64. You can't say that every 3-D Mario game has been crap unless you've played them all, especially the one that most gamers would agree is the best in the series.
If it doesn't look top-notch to you, buy Mario 64 DS, the graphics have been improved to standard-quality DS games.
You have to play Mario 64. It's like Ocarina of Time (best game voted by the Escapist, I might add), being truly inventive and revolutionary.

What's with all the hate on Sunshine... I liked that one! =/
Over all I thought Sunshine was an ok game. Not great but not bad. I also however think that its nothing as good as the original 2D games.
Everytime I hear an argument like this the main word that comes to mind is:Nostalgia.
Also, and to shamelessly quote ZP,"Nostalgia is like stuffing your nose full of cocaine".
Honestly dude the old 2D game were great I agree totally. However the advancements in technology make then relics.
Look back at them fondly and smile, and then turn around to see all the cool stuff they influenced today.

SunShine was badass btw.

I mean, to each there own, but seriously at least try Super Mario 64. It is a great one. Don't try the DS remake though... go original or nothing.
Alright, I'm just gonna go and bore everyone with my story here:

Back when the N64 had just been released, I refused to like Super Mario 64. Mario was supposed to be in 2D, I said, and I never gave it much of a chance. Instead I bought my Nintendo 64 with a copy of Mario Kart 64, which was and is awesome.

Later on, though, a friend of my brother's brought SM64 over, and I realized that it was really good. Because of this, a friend got me a preowned copy of the the game for my birthday, but... it soon disappeared (I only found it again a couple of months ago), and I didn't play the game again until the DS remake.

So how about that DS remake? It was AWESOME. Sure, the touch controls were a strain for my thumb, but after a bit of getting used to them they became quite accurate, and even better than the original stick for the "slide" levels. Plus, the graphics had been pimped up quite a bit, the extra characters and such made it even more fun, and the camera controls were much improved over the original.

Today I'll just be satisified with saying that the main series of Super Mario games are all good, although "Doki Doki Mario 2" and Sunshine are sort of the black sheep where they're good but not near the excellence of the rest of the series.

Also, I'm not a big fan of the Yoshi's Island series.

I don't quite understand the whole love for Mario. I liked some of the games but I still don't see how he seems to have become a God of games. I've always thought the originals were good but that any other platformer I played that I thought was good was instantly dismissed as a "Mario clone".
Well, all platformers are in a sense "Mario clones", but that's in no way a bad thing. Likewise, one could say that first-person shooters are Wolfenstein or Doom clones.

And as a fan of Ben Reilly, I'll add that a clone CAN be better than the original! ;)

Personally I think Mario 64 and Mario Galaxy are both genius games (until the near the end of galaxy. It starts getting a little lazy in level design). I've played a few 2D Mario games and I just found myself fustrated. They may have been good for their time, but I just wasn't impressed. New Super Mario Bros is the best game on the DS though.

By the way MrEco, in case no one mentioned it, your avatars naked.

Wait, you're criticizing the 3-d mario games without having played Mario 64? That is by far the best of the 3-d games.
Have you fully played Mario Galaxy?
Seriously?
Try getting the full stars and all the maps again...

Ok, IMO Mario Galaxy was EFFING GENIUS, every single power-up Mario got was fun and inventive. Some of the harder levels were made for serious gamers, although it was mostly designed to be played by anyone, it was just right.

In my opinion that game is waaaaaaaay better than Mario 64 (and I'm also a fan of that game, racing penguins was fun as hell). Though I understand why people still love M64, at the time the game was too awesome to even believe.
Mario galaxy was great but I often ask myself if anyone would have liked it if it was about a magic dog in space instead of Mario, it would have been good either way but people seem to defend Mario product because thier Mario. (I did love Mario Galaxy though)
Well, if its pretty much the same game but with a different character, whats the point? Your pretty much asking Nintendo to throw away money.

Ok. Im gonna go out on a limb here and say that you didnt read ANY of the earliest posts. Yes, people mentioned it. Yes a lotta people got there panties in a twist. Also, She may have been naked but was covered up. That combined with the fact that she was a FREAKING ANIME CHARACTER means that realy it was no-ones business but mine and the moderators, if they chose to have a problem with it. I did in fact message the moderator tendo82 about the ruccuss being caused. He said that there was nothing against the rules with my avatar. He did however suggest that I change it simply because if it is making alot of people get fussled it might harm my reputation as a poster. I figured I might as well take his advice and change it. So here ya go. A brand new avatar. I would also like to point out that going off-topic while posting in a thread is in fact against the rules. If anyone else seems to want to complain please kindly crawl in a hole and die a slow painfull death via starvation.

So you think that the 3D ones were bad without having played all of them? I think that the 3D Mario games are very good and I consider your argument misinformed.

Mario is a concept more then he is a character and thus he doesn't have to be confined to the retraints of 2D or 3D environments or gameplay (although stomping goombas isn't very easy in 3D). I personally think he can take any dimension and make a worthwhile game (albeit the SAME worthwhile game about fifty times) Unlike his until recently considered rival sonic the hedgehog (yeah, i'm gonna regret pulling him into this...)
Sonic in my own personal opinion is perfectly suited to the side-scrolling super-speed adventures of the older, much older titles like on the megadrive (and to an extent maybe adventure battle on the dreamcast) and that's where he should have remained, sure spide up the gameplay pollish the graphics makes it all slick, fuck even introduce characters with no real connection to the sonic universe what-so-ever, it'd be great anyway, just don't mess with that formula.

Back onto Mario, the games for nes through to snes were great and they SEEMED like they followed a formula for that game to follow, we were wrong in this presumption of course because look at all the amazing platforms the pleasntly plump, moustache sporting, little itallian bastard has taken to.

I think with the older Mario titles it wasn't so much a formula it was just creating as much as you could with the little you had to work with.

comparison time, older Sonic games, even with sequals the gameplay always stayed the same and only tiny alterations or mechanics were ever put in (example, the spin dash) because that's what sonic games were about, running in one direction and trouncing enemies if you weren't too busy catapluting yourself through the air in search of the spinning little robotnik picture. and it worked, on the move to 3D more elements were thrown in with each new agonising title until eventually sonic's originally fantastic formula was forgotten in light of a new formula for shit and disapointment.

Whereas Older Mario games, the first few ones you'd have the ability to jump and sometimes throw fire, as the titles went on you found yourself on a map screen, some of the levels were now bonus challenges and you had a mighty collection of weird powers at your disposal.
the gameplay was somewhat altered with each new power and it was always fun to play.
and then the move to 3D, alot of big name companies were moving to 3D and Nintendo being one of the big hitters in videogames even then weren't gonna be left behind, so they used their most memorable characters (memorable now in the sense that we never NOT see them in games...) the plucky little fat plumper and his absurd choice of facial hair were now back in this breathtaking platform and ready to dominate and dominate he did in Mario 64 another game where Mario just seemed at home. unlike his constantly disapointing friend and rival Sonic.

So do i think Mario was better in 2D or 3D?
if the wall of text wasn't enough to put it across i'll tell you, it doesn't much matter.

Besides they STILL make 2D mario games...

Actualy it has nothing to do with nostalgia. I still to this day play the original SMB games and they are still just as fun as ever. I could(and already have) compare them to most games now a day and honestly say "Yup, SMB is still better". And as for advancements in technology, yes ill admit stuff has gotten shinier and for the most part better. But personally the graphics of Super Mario Bros' 3 still stands up well enough that they can easily hold there own. Graphics aside, gameplay is what makes-or-breaks a game for me and I would rather play Super Mario Bros' 3 over(for sake of example) Halo 3, Super Mario Galaxy or Resistence 2.
