Sure...

And he'll still be Cap in the film itself, right?

It's not like they are changing his name, just the movie title.
Yes. They need a way to better market the movie to other places.

I can't wait to see this film. I hope it's good or I'll be a saaaad panda.

Not recognizable enough??? I thought Captain America was one of Marvel's most identifiable heroes!
Yea, but on russian forums Captain Obvious is much more popular. Speaking of Marvel heroes Captain America was never really popular in Russia, almost unknown. You know who's popular? Wolverine.
edit: ninja'd... Damn. Captain Obvious is everywhere.

@The Imp, You may want to take a look at MovieBob's Big Picture "Who's Afraid of Captain America"

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/2429-Whos-Afraid-of-Captain-America

He points out some interesting things, like how if anyone represented the so-called "American capitalist vs Russian communist" idea, it'd be Iron Man, the CEO of a multi-bajillion dollar enterprise, former weapons contractor, and sworn enemy and many Soviet Russian super villains, such as the Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man.

Also, I'm Canadian, whoop-dee-doo, you don't need to be American to like the Captain America comics y'know. But then, I'm more of a fan of old(er)-fashioned comics, such as the Silver Surfer, the Avengers, and Batman. Not so much the new(er) books.

Imagine if the character were "Captain Russia" or "Captain France". What impression would this title give us? Would we imagine a champion of managerial Stalinism punching greedy capitalists in the face? Or a self-absorbed Parisian who berates others not to be the ignorant morons they are? I don't know. We would probably think of these images, but I don't think we would let our imaginations stop at the bottom of the list. And we may never see a "Captain Indonesia" because that isn't a character explicitly marketed to our American audience. But if there were a "Captain Venezuela" film, I might be interested to see how the writers viewed their country's best or defining qualities. Or, what they may be trying to say about their country or about their place in the world through a character. Or perhaps we would learn the writers' ideal vision for their country's future. Lot's of possibilities here.

What I'm trying to say is, a character like Captain America can say a lot about a society. I think people who assume the character must be jingoistic and one dimensional are limiting themselves, and those who suggest he be scrapped entirely on that account even more so. I understand the U.S.A. has earned itself a bad rap in the world. But do we really have to limit ourselves by examining national identity in the most simplistic way possible?

You denounce America for being jingoistic and nationalistic; maybe you're right. But you deny us this opportunity to examine our society or say anything else about ourselves.

Because we're all a bunch of hicks.

Yes, brand awareness...it could be seen as a promotion of American might rather than a character running around in spandex. I'm sure they want it known that this is a Marvel franchise you're getting into, not an American one. It sells more.

Not political, my squishy peach...

I don't have anything against this. It makes sense to make the title fit where it will be screened.
What there needs to be less of is anything coming out of Matthew Vaughn's mouth. That quote alone sounds a little too much like he would be more than happy to rewrite the entire Marvel Universe in his own image. As what is becoming more apparent with First Class.

Actually one of their teams in the MU, the Winter Guard is interesting in that it has a fantastic history of success but a phenomenal casualty rate. They're up to like their umptenth Crimson Dynamo and Red Guardian.

As a longtime fan of the character, I actually have a problem with "The First Avenger" part of the title. Cap was the first recruit of the Avengers. Thor, Iron Man, the Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp were the first Avengers. That's right. I'm a geek and damn proud of it. As for the name change to suit other countries, so be it.

Maybe they should get a cameo along with The Dirty Pair :D

... I have little more to add, I just don't think any Capt Merka thread is complete without this image
