Marvel vs. Capcom 3 adds Smash Bros "Simple" Controls

If just thinking about quarter-circle and dragon-punch motions makes your thumb start to hurt, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has a solution to your problem.

I really like fighting games, okay? Motions like the quarter-circle-forward, the half-circle-backward, and even the full-360 are second nature to guys like me who cut our teeth on Street Fighter II. For others, though, these classic fighting-game movements are more of a barrier to entry in the genre than anything else.

While Marvel vs. Capcom 3 will preserve the classic control scheme for fighting game diehards, it will offer an alternative "Simple Mode" for those less accustomed to the traditions of the genre. In Simple mode, you only have two main buttons to worry about - one for normal attacks, and one for special moves.

As in Super Smash Bros., Simple mode's special attacks will be executed by simply tilting the control stick in a direction and hitting the button: Ryu might throw a fireball with a neutral-direction press, but a forward+special might make him do a dragon punch instead. It's the same control scheme that Capcom used to great effect on the Wii with Tatsunoko vs. Capcom [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/7116-Review-Tatsunoko-vs-Capcom-Ultimate-All-Stars], and it means that newbies can focus on learning how the game works instead of having to spend time learning the necessary muscle memory first.

Frankly, I think it's a great idea. It dissuades random buttonmashing both by making it easier to succeed without mashing and by making it more likely that you'll do something you didn't mean to do if you mash, and it makes the game more accessible without killing the inner complexity that fighting-game fans love.

Sure, you won't see Justin Wong using Simple mode at the next EVO tournament, but it's probably a welcome addition for everyone else.

Marvel vs. Capcom has always been about a balance of casual and complex for me. I see this as a good inclusion for people more inclined to just sit back and mess around with some friends.

This might be good for me, for the person who can't memerize and initiate all those bloody combos that look just utterly fantastic and deal super high amounts of damage.

Sadly, I'll get hateful bashing for this if I continously beat people in simple mode. I do need to at least try.

Though this is a nice addition to the mix, I wont be suprised if this gets removed.

Why not, Capcom did something similar in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. Fighting games shouldn't just be for the Veterans and Elites of fighting games, but for everyone who wants to play.

They wouldn't remove something like that, everyone has the option to use it so it's thier own fault if they suck at remembering certain things.

Fine my me. Skilled players will still wipe to floor with people using these anyday.

This has now gone from my "Steer clear" list to my "Rent/Buy used" list. My last attempt at a serious fighting game in Street Fighter 4 led to holes in the wall and a dented controller so I'm all for this.

Ye, seriously, street fighter 4 controls were balls, atleast in Tekken you can "spam" square and the character will do some sort of fluid attack motion, but in SF4 he just stands there punching the same way if you "spam" push a button.

OT: Good, that's why I like Super smash, easy controls to use, maybe I can think about getting this game now :p

Bleh. I've been playing fighters since the Dreamcast, after I got over that phase where I thought all fighters sucked since I kept losing, so I feel this is extraneous.

But why am I tripping? I won't be using it, so whatever.

This is a fantastic idea. I think I'll check the game out now; the 'standard' fighting-game controls always seemed needlessly complex and asinine to me.

I expect a load of Stop Having Fun Guys [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/StopHavingFunGuys] to raise a fuss about this, though. Just like Megaman 10's easy mode. It's optional. They don't have to use it if they don't want to.

Outstanding idea.

In my opinion, this is what made Smash Bros. so popular... anyone could play it. I was never able to pull off half the moves in Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, which really detracted from my enjoyment of them.

The first thing I thought reading this... YAY OKAMI!!! :)
OT: This will be good, but I just hope there will be a bit of advantage to properly learning them, as I'm sure people who take the time to learn them would be pissed to be beaten by someone who just picked up the controller.

This is ok. But, I would like to see them put up different online modes, one for casual players and one for hardcore so it won't be unbalanced...

Excellent idea, should help my bro finally get into fighting games long enough to finally learn how to headshot him in Battlefield :D

I approve wholeheartedly, if only for the fact that smash bros was the only fighting game I ever got the hang of...

I think its a good idea.. as long as it isn't as simple as two buttons. A single button dedicated for special moves like button + up special move one, or button +down special move 2 etc would be neat. I've played alot of fighters..this option will make them much more fun in a party/drinking session, will avoid button masher defeats (to an extent, plus i mean it makes up for the margin of error between arcade pad and console controller translation. I'm all for it.

This is a fantastic idea when I heard about it, my one problem with fighters is never being able to pull off the big long moves in most games properly, despite playing Street Fighter games since I was a kid I just never really did them. This will be much better for everybody and allow the game to be a lot more liked. I'm really looking forward to this.
