Nothing wrong with dark. Space is dark, after all.
Especially Dark Space, which is where the remaining Reapers are hangin' out, according to ME1.

I trust Bioware to handle this "dark" atmosphere responsibly. I do not expect Warrior Within from them, and I don't expect them to jump on badnwagons and just make life/their game universe a shitty place where everyone goes about doing drugs and banging whores and they just go ahead and say "that is what 'dark' is".

Hopefully there will be a ton of goofy bounty hunters after your ass and you have to kill Wrex because 100 million creds is a lot of money to trade for friendship

Hey at this point as long as EA does not mess it up I'll be happy. Some how I have a bad feeling this is going to turn out like those part where you had to play Nero in Devil May Cry.

Although I have faith in Bioware, the decision to make the middle game 'darker' seems....odd, I guess. It's going to be hard to make me want to play through 24 hours of depressing and/or soul wrenching gameplay and then go "Hey! Wait for the third one, which may or many not come out any time soon!" Bioware can pull it off, but its going to be interesting.

This seems like the logical course of action to me. You gloss over nasty amoral research corporations and the horrors of the slave trade in the first Mass Effect. With an army of gigantic, super genocidal god machines on the way it seems only natural that they'd add some more grimdark.

I look forward to this. And the robotic hand that Shepard is surely going to get after it is chopped off by an angry Anderson. Maybe it can be like the Bionic Commando's arm.
I'm sorry what? His arm got chopped off? I must've missed something in Mass Effect.

Anyway, a more grim setting makes sense. As John Stalvern already said, the first Mass Effect already hinted to a universe much more grim than we actually saw in the game. Makes sense to show us that in Mass Effect 2.

It was a joke delivered in the stream of thought comparing Mass Effect 2 to The Empire Strikes Back, Shepard taking the place of Luke in Cloud City and Anderson taking the place of Darth Vader.

It's perfect like that.

I saw that scene where Shepard's cruising along with that Asari diplomat in his hover-car through this dark, hazily lit urban metropolis (most likely the Citadel), and I just thought this is exactly what it should feel like.

Grim and foreboding.

Yes, and Wrexx will die in some pathetic way (like getting his jump-pack punctured and falling into the mouth of some giant sand-squid-thing).
Hell no. Even if that did happen, Wrex would kill the giant sand-squid-thing from the inside and walk out covered in blood asking where the next target to mutilate is.

Presumably followed by the Delta squad from Gears of War 2 complaining about being eaten to begin with and some witty one liners.

Oh my God, does this mean that there will be prequels eventually? Horrible, horrible prequels featuring Hayden Christensen?

Slightly off topic but Shephard isn't dead. The Geth in the trailer was Legion (Left side of screenshot wearing Onyx style armour with N7 markings similar to Shephard's).

That's my theory anyway.

Back on topic: Can't wait until this is out and I get my Terminus armour! http://na.llnet.bioware.cdn.ea.com/u/f/eagames/bioware/masseffect2/resources/assets/media/screenshots/screenshot-027-p.jpg

I actually happen to know a girl who hadn't seen any of the Star Wars movies.
Scary, I know.
On ME2: it has a funny name. Me too!

Anyway....

Referring to Kotor 2, Lead Designer Chris Avellone said this:
"The biggest influence was The Empire Strikes Back, and it was mostly a personal preference. The movie had a lot of surprises - it had a dark edge to it where not everything ended happily ever after, and I think the struggles of the characters ended up being stronger for it."
- Chris Avellone, December 23rd, 2004
...and then this three months later...
"I am never going to do an Empire Strikes Back ending again in a game, even if they put branding irons to my feet."
- Chris Avellone, March 21st, 2005
Kotor 1 was made by Bioware, right? And Avellone, who worked with the company that made the sequel to Kotor, said he'd never do an "Empire Strikes Back" theme again, right? And ME2, the sequel to Mass Effect, is being made by Bioware, right? And producer Casey Hudson is proclaiming the greatness of an "Empire Strikes Back" theme, right?

I'm just saying, if a designer doesn't like "darker theme" mantra, I'm sure as hell not gonna take a producer's word for it.
You know you can do something in an Empire Strikes back style without copying the entire progression and tone of the story, right?

And I'd keep making Sovereign = Darth Vader jokes but to be honest all my jokemaking has gone into Sovereign = David Bowie. Thanks Venture Bros.!

EDIT: Really need to pay attention to dates on these things. sheesh.
