I don't think if its even certain that your romance would carry over. Maybe they moved on; Shepard being dead tends to do that. Personally what I would think happen might happen is that he/she might not be part of your mission team. So you would communicate via VI (halo-letters, whatever). Meanwhile, the other 'potential love interest' is trying to subtly offer you a shoulder massage (get my drift?).

"Subject's Zero's backstory is really interesting as she's one of the more real characters because most people know someone like her. She's tough, but when she shows a little vulnerability it seems so real and it's very compelling. She's a love interest, and when she shows that vulnerability it really pulls on your emotions."
Not to mention she's Casey Hudson's (project director of the game) favourite character.
I want Tali. I mean, I had Ashley, but nothing says exotic like an alien lover with a mask on. Or maybe that says bondage, I don't know. Hell, Pyramid Head managed to pull of the helmet look. I like the idea of not knowing what I'm screwing. Well, in games I do. Makes me feel brave.
My female Shepard wouldn't, she just has a thing for guys like Kaiden, you know guys with smaller balls than her. My male Shepard on the other hand would stick it anywhere and if Ashley caught him he'd just say,

But Liara's meant to be like 15 if you're equivalising it to human maturity. Shepard's just a big pervert.
Edit: ME2 is apparently 2 years after ME1, so Tali was legal back then as well. Awwww yeaaaah.

I knew she was a little bit... um.. extreme with her views on racial purity when I met her, but I ignored that and just told her what I thought she wanted to hear so that I could get her into bed.

Soon after I'd banged her we were out on our first proper shore leave as a 'couple', walking through one of the Wards in the Citadel with my homie Garrus tagging along, when we came upon some crazy demonstration by a group of right wing, racist Terran extremist... I think they were the TNP or Terra Firma or something.
Feeling slightly uncomfortable because my mate Garrus was with us, I try to walk past the protesters as quickly and as inconspicuously as possible, but the missus had other ideas... what did she do, she only bloody went and started joining in with the demonstration, chanting "No blood for soil" and "Dey tuk er Jeobs!" or what ever those crazy Terra Firma nutters like to shout.
It was so embarrassing, Garrus just looked at me with a mixture of sympathy and disgust, while all I could do was facepalm and hang my head in shame, she made me feel like Dave Angel.
Suffice to say that was the last time I ever took her out with me in public again (not when I had important Specter shit to do, she's an embarrassment) but unfortunately I didn't have the option to dump her, all I could do was leave her in the basement of the ship on her own and ignore her for the rest of the time.
It's great that I'll have the opportunity to make her dump me, and nail that sexy Tali to boot.
'Talk about banging two birds with one stone' (to quote from the foremost authority on inter-species relationships, Brannigan's Law).
