They've been ignoring or paying lip service to all decisions players made in all games so I nothing changed.

"We want this to be a new story and it would be very hard to say it's a new story but also that you need to understand how [the past trilogy] ended."

Yeah, bullshit; Bioware never planned to extend the Mass Effect franchise beyond a trilogy, that's why they never prepared for it, and that's why they thought three endings with radically different implications wouldn't cause a problem. This kind of "We meant to do that" bullshit reeks of executive meddling.

As for the news itself, I am conflicted. On the one hand, choice and consequence was at the core of what made the Mass Effect trilogy so deeply affecting; on the other hand, I would sooner cannibalize my own genitals than again endure the misery that was the ending to Mass Effect 3, and I would very much like to forget about it.

Further more, I'm not sure it's even... possible to engineer a game that could account for three scenarios that are so radically different. It would essentially have to include 3 different stories. Back when I first finished ME:3 I considered the possibility that if a sequel was ever produced, Bioware might opt to make 3 different games, one for each ending. Come to think of it though, that sounds like the kind of thing that, say, CD Projekt Red might be down for, but definitely not EA.

Personally, I think the Gundam approach would have been a good compromise; just set every Mass Effect game series in an alternate continuity, each one connected only by shared iconography, settings and themes. But that would require that Bioware and EA make use of some degree of artistic ambition, and even though Bioware will always have a special place in my heart, let's not pretend that they haven't spent the last decade or so running in place with their storytelling, counting on their (Generally) impeccable form and the occasional flip to keep our attention.

They tried taking a tentative step forward once with DA:II, and when the fanbase didn't immediately drop everything and line up for the ceremonial twat munching session, they officially instituted the practice of publicly executing anyone who can't prove beyond reasonable doubt that they've memorized The Hero with a Thousand Faces word for word.

So if we were ever going to get more Mass Effect, this was probably inevitable.

I'd recommend John P's Alternate MEHEM http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/265/? as it contains two options. The first leaves the endings substantially intact, turning the High EMS Destroy ending into the Shepard lives scenes from the original MEHEM.

The second does exactly what the original does but doesn't have the extra cutscenes that have now been added to it, and to be honest they aren't very good.

Another great mod is the Extended Anderson Conversation http://www.nexusmods.com/masseffect3/mods/173/? which restores the full version of it.

Seriously, that is a man's face.
I don't see it.
I don't find her particularly attractive, but it's definitely a girl's face.
I'd take her over Liara's "dad".

I've had this conversation elsewhere and most say she looks like the average woman and I just thank my lucky stars the average woman in Melbourne doesn't look like Shrek.
It might just be me, but I'm seeing literally nothing wrong with her. I mean the asari in-game were basically just female human face models painted blue, so their not supposed to be like unearthly beautiful or anything.

She actually looks realistically attractive, she doesn't have to have some kinda doll-ish, bimbo, animu girl/disney princess look to be explicitly female.

The Asari looks like pretty much every woman in Dragon Age Inquisition. I think it is just an affect of the switch to the Frostbite engine.

I hope that Mass Effect weathers it better than Dragon Age did. It really doesn't seem suited for role playing games.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and like I said earlier, most people aren't seeing the "manish" features that Metalix and I see but her facial features are far too strong (especially the jawline and mouth) for my liking. Not trying to be all "7 outta 10 would not bang" either, she genuinely looks like an unattractive man to me.

The female protag they showed actually looks like the average woman...

Definitely not unattainable model material but still feminine looking and attractive without being mere eye candy.

Eh I know the scenes they cut in were rough, but if I'm honest I still liked it a great deal. The way they managed to get Shepard, bruised and bloodied but alive, to hang Anderson's plaque and hug a love interest was awesome.

But hey, mods rock :)

Strikes me as more a woman who's lived a frontier life and hence her features are a tad weathered and rougher than an Asari who was raised on Thessia or the Citadel.

Oh wow, she looks good. Frostbite was a rough guts engine for DragonAge: Inquisition though, I liked the game well enough but it was hard to get something that didn't look absurd.

It's weird in a way that with player data showing that male Shepard was overwhelmingly the character of choice for players in ME2 and 3 (I don't think data exists for the first game) with 80% or more choosing that incarnation, that they'd choose the female version of the new hero to debut first.

Since the majority of Mass Effect players, and I think it isn't unfair to say that includes the women too, prefer to play as the guy...surely it would have made sense to feature the male incarnation of Andromeda's hero first?

Then again I'm not a marketing executive, so what do I know.

Pffffft just popped in this thread to see what was up and srsly "ASARI NOT HOT ENOUGH PLZ FIX".

OT: I'm probably going to end up getting this game but I'm not really gonna pay it that much attention until it's much closer to coming out. No sense getting over hyped.

It's because ManShep was featured a lot in the original trilogy. So they're doing something different this time. It's not really going to affect who players pick, but it's nice of them to not stick with White Dude every time they're featuring a game with protagonist choice.

Hah! Actually laughed out loud to that, thankyou! Only browsed to see why so many comments, was not expecting such specific trivialities. Now there could be humour hidden anywhere within the most despairing threads, must I subject myself to such torturous browsing?

Bioware are shit at endings. They should just leave every game they ever make open ended and then fuck off elsewhere in the galaxy/planet for the sequel. When they try to wrap shit up they just fuck it up.

It really says a lot about how much of a giant stinking turd the ending to 3 was that the entire new game is based on how little it matters. "Fuck it, forget it, let's start all over."

Sadly Bioware, you burned a lot of good faith with that ending. This would've been an impulse purchase for me in the days of ME2. Now? With none of the characters I loved? Starting all over again without the writer that made the original games? I'm going to be waiting for awhile, doing a lot of research, and having a very low tolerance for bullshit before I CONSIDER buying it.

Good luck. You're gonna need it.

Everything I've learned about ME:A over the past few weeks has basically killed my interest in it. A shame, really. Bioware hasn't made a good game since ME2, and their mishandling of all their games since hasn't given me good hopes either. Andromeda also seems to be having its own development problems, since it was announced a while back but we still haven't seen much of the actual game.

As for that Asari, I don't find her attractive either (I also mistook her for a man at first; "WTF There's male Asari now?!") but I'm wondering how much of that is due to the Frostbite engine and how much is intentional.

This is what happens when media is constantly filled with women who look like fashion models and little else.
Yea, God forbid that when Bioware creates a species whose entire premise is they can mate with any other species and basically the whole galaxy finds them hot that gamers would expect them to, you know, actually look hot.

I'm also puzzled by your "fashion model" comment. Most heterosexual men are turned off by fashion models as they tend to be stick-thin with flat chests and androgynous-looking faces. Look at porn actresses or the women on the covers of GQ or Esquire for an idea of what guys prefer.

If you recall, BioWare has been all about "defying traditional beauty standards" of women in video games in recent years, or at least that's their excuse.

They're like the polar opposite of Team Ninja.
That would explain why pretty much every female character in DA:I was incredibly ugly.

I stopped looking at this thread for like a short while and all of a sudden it's all about the Asari.....seriously everyone? No, seriously?
THAT'S your biggest problem? That the chicks don't look hot enough? I like to think I've seen my fair share of women and I can tell you that there's more than just the ones that look like they all go to the same plastic surgeon that some Diva-like Koreans would go to. (Going off of stuff I was told from a Korean friend)

I see your Dr. Who gif and raise you this!

Also with you on that one. Really hard to get hyped even now.

After the Mass Effect 3 endings, the horrific butchering of Revan and The Exile in The Old Republic and finally Dragon Age: Shitquisition in its entirety, BioWare has A LOT of good will to build back up if they want people to take them seriously with something like this.

On The Topic Of The Random Female Who Woke Up From Her Space Hangover: Assuming she isn't just Ashley 2.0 (And also assuming that there won't be any subsequent random Expy-ing of Miranda in to her character as well) then what is everyone's deal with it anyways? I mean it isn't like there won't be an option to play a male character. Unless people REALLY just want to see more of Mark Vanderloo's face getting derped around.

I for one hope that ME3 ending will have a HEAVY bearing on MEA. That they learned that adding RGB gauge explosion as an ending constitutes a failure of otherwise, relatively good story.
