Mass Effect is no KOTOR

Got Mass Effect for christmas, among several other games.

After playing it for about 12 hours, and making it to the first planet, the one with all snow, I'm just not into it. It's no Knights of The Old Republic. I feel no connection whatsoever to any of the characters, not even my own. The only character I even care about is Joker, voiced by Seth Green. Probably because he's the only character to express emotion.

In the beginning, I was liking it. What with happens with Saren and all. But nothing grabs me. I haven't seen ANY characters that I actually like, aside from Joker.

Also Wrex is the only one that's made me laugh. So he can stay.

The whole game is just too dry. It feels like things of interest are spaced too far apart. KOTOR had a lot of things that made it great. I actually cared about my crew, and they actually expressed emotion. HK-47 is the greatest.

But my interest just isn't there. I like the ship Normandy a whole lot more than my party members.

So tell me, for those who have played both games, how do you feel?

Well, KOTOR bored me to death, I couldn't stand either of them for more than a few hours each.

Mass Effect is one of my favourite games of the past couple years.

So, meh, we're just very different.

I played it for a few hours and found nothing of interest in it. The battle system was crap, poor selection of customisations and do not even get me started on its bugs.
In short what is the point of this thread? So you do not like Mass Effect. I do not like KotOR. Big whoop for everyone...
I'm asking how you feel. You answered my question. Seems pretty straight forward.

KotOR is one of my all time favourites (not the grubby little love child that is the second game).

So is Mass Effect. Mass Effect was harder for me to get into because it's an entirely new universe that you don't really understand - also, if you've played 12 hours and you're only that far in you must have been doing a fair amount of side-quests (which are mostly rubbish) so you won't have spoken to the characters that much.

I've completed a play-through of Mass Effect in 10 hours, so maybe you'll want to just pick things up a little.

KotOR really is fantastic though, I love that game so much.

I just couldn't stand Mass Effect. Like you, I really just couldn't really care about anyone in my party.

I loved them both so very, very dearly. Frankly I love everything Bioware has ever done, especially Dragon Age: Origins which I started yesterday. I think my advice to you would be to do all the sidequests etc. they have a tendency to flesh out the characters much more than just speedrunning through the game.

I've loved all of bioware's games except jade empire. I loved both games, but I haven't played KOTOR recently enough to compare them.

Dragon Age is good then?

Like I said I love both ME and KotOR - I'm now DLing Dragon Age off of Steam but I'm worried it's going to be a little bit too hardcore (gameplay wise) for me xD

I'm grateful ME wasn't another KOTOR. I gave KOTOR two hours of my time before uninstalling it and handing it over to my wife (who played it for a day). I simply couldn't stand the game's interface. Those were two extremely boring hours. I wanted an RPG; not a turn-based troop-based strategy.

ME suffered interface problems also, but to a much lesser degree. Though I was disappointed by how linear and shallow the game was. Sure you can go to 50 different planets and do this or that, but if felt pointless, and I'm not the type who cares about the whole "Achievement" fad.

I never cared about achievements.

I read the entire manual for KOTOR before I played it, and that certainly helped. I found it very rewarding, as I was quite interested in my party members.

lol don't worry, they ease you into it well. Though I have heard if you're not tactical combat will rape you quickly (especially mid/late game) =p (but not unfairly). I wish you luck my fellow Escapist.

I like both: KotOR may well have been my first RPG, and I was something of this site's official ME fanboy for a while. They're different, but both very fun. I guess we're just all different people.

You can link so many things together from Bioware RPGs.

You start off as a pretty awesome guy/girl, with leet skills. You are considered better than most of your peers. Tragedy/hardship strikes, and you go out adventuring, picking up companions. Soon you become a member of the Jedi/Grey Wardens/Spectres and you are then given a number of planets to do missions on, in no particular order. Then you get to the end game, where the plot moves super fast in comparison to the rest of the game, and you are stuck in the one spot. You cannot up and leave like you could in the other zones. You finish the story, kill the big bad and voila, game over.

Also, as Shamus Young so aptly points out: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/6862-Experienced-Points-The-Writers-of-BioWare

Sten = Canderous Ordo.
Oghren = Wrex and HK-47.
Leliana = Mission Vao and Tali.
Wynne = Jolee Bindo, Captain Anderson (I'm not sure if he counts, as he's not a character you take along).
Alistair = Garrus, Carth Onasi.
Morrigan = Bastila.
