Max Payne Puts on Pounds, Sheds Hair For New Game

Max Payne has really let himself go since the end of Max Payne 2 if shots of the latest issue of Game Informer showing a bald, overweight Payne in Max Payne 3 are to be believed.

Guess he didn't try hard enough to get the click through [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKJ6IindPTA] if you don't want your perception of the hard-boiled hero to be changed forever.

If you did click through, well you saw what I saw. Max Payne looking overweight, now bald and rocking a dirty wifebeater and cargo pants. Sure he's got a big gun in one hand, but otherwise, this is not the Max we knew from the first two games.

Details from Deeko [http://www.deeko.com/news/?p=12170] corroborating the alleged Game Informer reveal that Max isn't just overweight and bald, but also addicted to pain killers. That last part I could have seen coming, considering he downed about 3,000 pills over the course of the first two games.

To get away from it all he's found himself in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where the game takes place in an Uncharted 2-esque setting with fully destructible environments (so long New York). Gameplay unfolds in Brazilian slums and features a "more visceral and ultra-violent" take on the series' bullet time mechanic. There's also online multiplayer.

Still in denial that Max could let himself get in such bad shape? Well, this is all rumor until more people get their hands on the issue, so it could all be bogus. But I don't know. Max was pretty close to going crazy in Max Payne 2. If that game was The Fall of Max Payne, I guess Max Payne 3 is the depressing aftermath.

UPDATE: This is official [http://gameinformer.com/News/Story/200906/N09.0609.1800.43633.htm], guys.

Max looks awesome! This is what games are all about, evolution. It's not really believable that a man that had all of Max's experiences would be clean cut and sane. We all know Max is crazy, glad they're making him look the part.

*Thumbs up* It's good they finnally made a realistic mentally unstable main charecter in a game... ah, the memories though... young, enthusiastic, full of promise... and bullets...

Looks brutal.

Like was said before,a man like Max Payne would not really bother keeping in shape after all he's beeing through.

This is the same as MP2, where he looked older and more...... "rugged" than in MP1.

Looks badass to me. I should really get round to playing those Max Payne games, I hear they're quite dandy.

Now all I need to see is a game protagonist in a bathrobe and slippers toting a shotgun.

The heavy build doesn't creep me out. The baldness combined with that does.

He looks like a suspect from a Law and Order episode.

Just get the left stick stuck in the forward position towards a wall and he should lose a few pounds, considering he has the endless vitality every other video game protagonist seems to have.

I'm just glad that this should disprove any fears I had of Max Payne 3 being just another action-adventure. Just need it all to be tied into a film-noir plot with plenty of Norse mythological references, some meta-fiction and a less ridiculous physics engine and I'll be happy with it. While the gunplay is fun, Max Payne is all about the mood to me. Although Rockstar could easily take his new direction too far, I have faith in them.

The only really creepy part is the baldness.
The slightly overweight part I can deal with.
But baldness? *shudder*

Looks like the baldness is possibly voluntary, if that's the signs of a shaved head (with a receding hairline) I'm seeing there. He looks a bit slovenly, but look at those arms- it's pretty obvious that he hasn't spent his time watching Address Unknown reruns and downing Bon-Bons. Did people expect him to go through the hell he experienced in the first two games and come out happy and well-adjusted? He looks like he's had about 15 years of painkiller addiction and unresolved grief wearing him down... I say bravo, it's good to see characters actually change with time.
