The search engine could be better. I hope I didn't sound too rude ; )
It really could, it's the worst piece of shit I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. In terms of the story I haven't been able to access a video of the events yet but it does sound like the guy was slightly in the wrong. It would have been better if he either only hit them a couple of times to make them go away or just punched them a few times.

They deserved to be beaten with a metal rod? That's too much for me to believe they deserved it. Honestly, that's a whole lot of violence to have "deserved it" in my book.
Then again, almost any amount of violence is too much for me so...
so... someone smacks you with their purse as you walk away, jumps over a counter in order to continue beating you and you wouldn't do anything to retaliate what so ever?
So... someone hits you with a book and chases you in a public area and rather then getting help, you'd shoot them with a gun? Oh, that's not the same? He could've smashed her head in 'causing a major hemorage and killed her.

For fuck sakes, if someone starts chasing you in an public place with a purse, either get help from your fellow employees, push her and maybe kick at the most or pull out the metal rod to scare, not to actually strike someone.

You honestly think two women slapping you gives you the right to break bones and smash them in with a piece of metal, then you're a pretty sick person. There's self defense and just a plain psychotic response.

This man has issues, his repsonse to this was not just wrong, but proof he can't be around other people if he can go so far. No slap in the face and 'being chased' will ever justify breaking someones bones. Now if she had an actual weapon, then yes. But she didn't... This is obvious he went to far in 'self defense' and people are acting like he's some fucking hero.

Probably a bit overkill, and he definitely shouldn't be in the service industry anymore, but I have no sympathy for those 2 ladies. They had it coming.
