The "changing of its creators into salarymen" is probably the key issue in the Japanese development environment. Pushing a great developer into becoming a mediocre manager is the formula for failure. Mediocre managers influence their workers make great workers into mediocre ones. As a result the workers take it easy because little is expected of them.

His comment about "players getting used to games" is also key. Doing the same thing as the competition, only slightly improving the aspects of something that already exists, filling the market will similar and often unremarkable products will almost doom the games industry as it did almost 30 years ago.
