Pretty much the only metal I've been listening to lately is Sunn O)))

Well, I like Earth too, but they're not particularly heavy these days.

I have to ask this - what exactly is it that people find listenable about SunnO)), and drone in general? I mean I get being slow, heavy, and atmospheric, and I know it's about ambiance, but I just find it...boring.

I personally enjoy it for the same reason I listen to Lustmord, certain movie and game scores/soundtracks.

It creeps me the fuck out.
Only some of their stuff does this though. I actually find the straight drone stuff rather dull myself. It really shines when mixed with other things. (Sound effects, Attilas ungodly voice.) Listen to Agartha to see what I mean.

Ah, so that's what math metal is. That's really interesting.

But I always thought of technical death metal as sounding something more like this:

In terms of simply how they sound I would say Meshuggah fits closer to prog.
That band sounds to me like fairly standard death with some proggy bits and some techie bits.

For me, meshuggah pretty much define tech metal. They take something which is written in 4/4, which is compositionally about as simple as you can get. And then they add a ton of syncopation and speed the whole thing up, and you end up with a song like Bleed. It's the musical equivalent of cooking your food using a high-tech flamethrower. And that's why we love them.
In contrast, a prog composition would be the equivalent of lovingly toasting your bread so that it's perfect. And then adding something really bizarre on top and making it still work somehow.

More suggestions:

Blotted Science:

Animals as Leaders:

Septic Flesh:

Mastodon:

You just answered your own question: ambiance. True, it's not something I listen to a regular basis. However you wouldn't believe how creepy it is to read Stephen King's "The Stand" while listening to "Báthory Erzsébet" by Sunn O))). That being said, I'd never listen to it just for the sake of listening to music. Truth be told, I don't even like metal all that much, only the ambient stuff.

I didn't read all of this, so I'll probably repeat some that've already been mentioned - apologies for that.

So here's what I got:

HAMMERFALL: You said Power Metal, so they definately belong here. Sadly right now they're taking a year off, so no new stuff and no live appearances, but you got like 15 years of material to sift through. Have fun.

Blind Guardian: German band with lyrics centered around fantasy literatur like Lord Of The Rings and A Song Of Ice And Fire - with appropriate tunes.

Orden Ogan: Another German band who've been compared to Guardian:

Alestorm: Speaking of pirates, here they are. They're also scottish.

Rhapsody: Italian power metal band. They did that thing with freakin' Christopher Lee a while back, which is all kinds of awesome. You should check out the album "Power of the Dragonflame".

Feuerschwanz: Another German band - a bit more on the medieval side. Lyrics are all in German, some of them quite bawdy. Great band to drink to.

Grailknights: Special mention goes to a band from my home town of Hannover. Superherometal by Grailknights. Actually more along the lines of melodic death metal, and more recently, some rather folksy elements. In superhero costumes. There's a whole backstory.

Sabaton: Have been mentioned numerous times, but I'm including them because I'm going to the concert this evening.

There are probably countless more I forgot, but this should get you started...

Have fun!

Here's some more based on the individual genres you asked for.

I know a good number of death metal style bands but I imagine you know them all. (Vader, Pestilence, ect)

First off, probably one of my favorite bands ever. Seriously, check these guys out. Some amazing industrial death metal right here.
Some more good stuff:

It took entirely too long before Blind Guardian was mentioned, but since it has, I'll leave you with Tyr and Seven Kingdoms

I can't believe nobody's mentioned Morbid Angel. It's really late tonight and I'll wake people up if I hit the Youtube for links, but I recommend all of this:

The Black Dahlia Murder (Each album is better than the last one, Ritual is the shit.)

Dying Fetus (Kings of breakdown-core or whatever it is, I'm not in the genre pigeonholing commitee)

Cannibal Corpse

Strapping Young Lad

Cephalic Carnage

Genghis Tron is awesome if you have an ear for electronic/techno sound as well

Deicide has been amazing for many many years

I'll leave it at that for now.

Manowar, Meshuggah, The Duskfall, As I Ly Dying, August Burns Red, Killswitch Engage, Raised Fist (Possibly one of the most interesting metal vocals I've heard in a while), Five Finger Death Punch, All That Remains, A Day to Remember...

To name but a few that come to mind. Personally, out of all those, The Duskfall are my favourite, particularly The Wheel and The Blacklight. Amazing song.

They technically fall under Groove (they were actually the band that created the genre), which is a sun-genre of Thrash. Other bands in the genre include White Zombie, Sepultra, Lamb of God, and Gojira. :p

Too much false metal here. Needs more Destroyer 666 and Sadistik Exekution.
This isn't metal-archives.
Do we really need to worry about what's trve and kvlt on The Escapist?
