Besides, if you think metal bands have a problem with this kinda thing, pity third wave ska fans; countless bands have turned into generic pop-punk acts and lost the horn sections.
Third wave ska fans completely deserve it, third wave ska itself being an utter bastardization of ska made by white kids in the american suburbs.
Just like 2nd wave ska is a bastardization? Or british rock music from the late 60's/early seventies is a bastardization of American blues?

By it's own merits 3rd wave/ska punk is a fun and suprisingly complex (try learning some of the basslines!) genre of music, but loads of bands like Goldfinger went for a mainstream Blink 182-esque sound.
I'd argue that 2nd wave two tone was a perfectly reasonable evolution of the 1st wave of ska, and that 3rd wave was the white-America-co-opt version. Removing any scary 'blackness' or actual politics and replacing them with high school antics to make it as safe as possible in a failed attempt to hit the mainstream airwaves.
Hey, I like my white-America-co-opt version just fine, being a white american kid from the suburbs myself. Good point, very good point and true even. But does that make it irrelevant as music? I mean, just because the lyrics are not as meaningful, does that make the whole genre irrelevant as art or music? And besides, are we white, soft, suburbanites not allowed to take a cool genre that sounds awesome and put our own pathetic angst into it? Are we not worthy?

Heeheehee, probably not, but I still rate Reel Big Fish as my 3rd favorite band, the angsty white boy I am. XD
No, you're right. I'm not saying it's not a relevant form of music, really. Because it is. And white suburbanite kids in the US have every right to make whatever music they want to. I mean, any genre can give us some cool shit. I'm just saying that I personally feel that 3rd wave ska fans being upset that their genre has gone to crap can be filed in the "what comes around goes around" category! Live by the genre shift, die by the genre shift and all that jazz.
Ah I see. Well that makes good sense. But I will remain upset that the genre went and died before I discovered it. XD

I do what I always do when looking for good Metal: Go a little deeper than whatever's on the music channels. I can't stand Disturbed and their Ilk. Of modern metal, by far my favourite bands are Protest the hero and Periphery, though SikTh have been doing similar stuff a few years ago and went criminally unnoticed.

Then of course there's Devin Townsend or Tool who I can always rely on for a masterclass album every time.
Protest the Hero? Periphery? SikTh? DEVIN TOWNSEND? TOOL??? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE?! Seriously, I love all of those bands/artists, Periphery and Protest the Hero especially.

To me, a lot of bands could be considered metal. Although some of the more prog metal bands can get really soft at times, even prog DEATH metal bands. I love throwing my non-metalhead friends with that stuff. A personal favorite of mine is playing Breathe In, Breathe Out by BTBAM and having it lead into Roboturner... just look up the songs to see what I'm talking about. XD
That reminds me of Grace by Lamb of God. It even fooled me the first time I heard it.

How about something older...

Couple of bands that was just starting out when I was younger.

Only really liked Suicidal Tendencies I first heard them when they opened for MegaDeth.
